Abstract: In a threshold estimation apparatus, a setting unit sets an initial intensity value for each electrode. A selection unit randomly selects an electrode. A stimulation unit, via the selected electrode, stimulates a living subject at an intensity set for the electrode. A detection unit detects the presence or absence of a response evoked by the stimulation. An update unit reduces or increases the intensity associated with the selected electrode, based on the presence or absence of the response evoked by the stimulation. An estimation unit, if the thus updated intensity associated with each electrode satisfies a convergence condition, estimates a convergence value as a threshold associated with the electrode. The threshold estimation apparatus repeats these processes until thresholds associated with all electrodes are estimated. If the same electrode was consecutively selected, the time interval between a stimulation and a subsequent stimulation is adjusted.
Abstract: An optical response measuring device is provided with a light source, first and second wavelength conversion elements and a light intensity sensor array. The light source generates a pair of light beams including light beams of first and second wavelengths, and the first wavelength conversion element generates measurement light. The measurement light is irradiated on an object for measurement and a detection light having first phase and second phase is obtained in response to this irradiation. A reference light that carries the phase of the pair of the pair light beams and the detection light both pass through a second wavelength conversion element to obtain a modulated reference light have first and second intensities. The first and second local intensities are then measured by the light intensity sensor array.

The present invention provides a method for manufacturing artificial skin having hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and hair pores, characterized in that it comprises each of the following steps: (A): a step of preparing an artificial skin having dermal and epidermal layers or an artificial skin having only a dermal layer; and (B): a step of transplanting isolated hair follicles to the artificial skin prepared in step (A); wherein said isolated hair follicle comprises a sebaceous gland, and said isolated hair follicle is transplanted to said artificial skin so that the surface of said dermal Layer of said artificial skin is in alignment with the position of the hair pore portion of said isolated hair follicle.
Abstract: To fabricate a practically useful non-polar AlN buffer layer on a sapphire crystal plate and manufacture a UV light-emitting device on a non-polar crystal substrate by adopting the crystal substrate as an example, an embodiment of the present invention provides a crystal substrate 1D comprising an r-plane sapphire crystal plate 10 and an AlN buffer layer 20D of non-polar orientation. The AlN buffer layer comprises a surface protection layer 22 and a smoothing layer 26. The surface protection layer suppresses roughness increase on a surface of the AlN buffer layer, and the smoothing layer makes the surface of the AlN buffer layer a smoothed surface. Also provided is a crystal substrate 11 comprising an AlN buffer layer 20T to which a dislocation blocking layer 24 for reducing crystallographic defects is added between the surface protection layer 22 and the smoothing layer 26. In another embodiment a deep UV light-emitting device is provided.

Abstract: An evaluation system for replication activity of HBV capable of visualizing and quantifying replication of HBV DNA in a short period of time inexpensively, safely, and rapidly and a method for evaluation using the system are developed and provided. Moreover, a novel composition for inhibiting HBV replication with a mode of action different from that of conventional anti-HBV drugs is developed and provided. A transformant into which the gene is introduced can be produced, and thereby a triterpene oxidase can be obtained.

Abstract: A new method capable of evaluating wettability of a surface of a material is provided. The method includes the following: applying a gas jet to a surface of a material that is covered with a liquid so as to squeeze the liquid; imaging a surface of a liquid film formed on the surface of the material after squeezing the liquid; and evaluating wettability of the material based on the presence or absence of interference fringes on the surface of the liquid film.
