Abstract: The present invention pertains to a process for isolating an intact clone of one target nucleic acid fragment having a known characteristic, from a group of fragments by preparing an initial library of clones from the group of fragments using a vector containing no more than a predetermined number of known restriction sites, preferably 1–3 restriction sites, subjecting the initial library to at least 10, and preferably between 50 and 70 restriction enzymes different from those to which the vector is susceptible, to produce a group of monodigested libraries, screening the group of monodigested libraries for the target fragment to determine those restriction enzymes to which the target fragment is insensitive, and subjecting the initial library to substantially all of the restriction enzymes to which the target fragment is insensitive, to produce a multidigested library having an intact clone of the target nucleic acid fragment.
Abstract: Commercial spandex can be prepared with greater efficiency, improved consistency and at lower costs from a high-solids content polyurethaneurea polymer solution. The polyurethaneurea is prepared using a combination of 4,4?-MDI and 2,4?-MDI, and an amount of chain extenders and chain terminators such that the polymer solution, prior to spinning, is highly soluble and has an appropriate pre-spun IV and primary amine content. Such spandex fibers, and the fabrics and garments comprising them, have good dyeability and colorfastness, as well as other desirable characteristics.

Abstract: A method for producing a spliced yarn comprising alternating predetermined lengths of a first and a second yarn and to the yarn is disclosed. A predetermined length of a first yarn is drawn through an intermingling jet. A leading portion of a second yarn is forwarding into the intermingling jet and into overlapping relationship with a trailing portion of the first yarn. The yarns are held in the intermingling jet, as by a clamp disposed forwardly of the jet. Using a pressurized fluid the overlapped portions are intermingled. The first yarn is then severed, and the spliced portion and a predetermined length of the second yarn are drawn through the intermingling jet. The cycle is repeated with the second yarn being the currently drawn yarn and the first yarn being forwarded into overlapping relationship therewith.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for preparing nitrile derivatives and their corresponding amines from 1-,2-,4-trivinylcyclohexane by hydrocyanation, followed by hydrogenation. Also disclosed are novel compounds used in the methods described herein.
Abstract: A garment and system includes a monitoring fabric comprising a first plurality of reflective yarns knitted or woven with a second plurality of stretchable yarns. The fabric exhibits both a light transmission property and a light reflection property. The amount of light transmitted through the fabric relative to the amount of light reflected by the fabric changes when the fabric stretches in response to motion, such as the motion induced by physiological activity (e.g., heart rate). The system includes at least one source of radiation having wavelength(s) in the range of 400 to 2200 nanometers and at least one detector responsive to such incident radiation. The source and detector are associated with the fabric such that the reception of incident radiation by the detector is directly affected by a change in the amount of light transmitted through the fabric relative to the amount of light reflected by the fabric when the fabric stretches.
Abstract: A process for preparing a hydrocyanation catalyst comprising contacting a bidentate phosphorous-containing ligand with nickel chloride in the presence of a nitrile solvent and a reducing metal which is more electropositive than nickel the nickel chloride being introduced as an aqueous solution and the water being removed concurrently with the reduction reaction by azeotropic distillation.

Abstract: A garment and system includes a monitoring fabric that exhibits a light reflection property and substantially no light transmission property when the fabric is illuminated with light having wavelength(s) in the range of 400 to 2200 nanometers. The amount of useful light reflected by the fabric into an aperture of acceptance defined with respect to an axis extending from the fabric relative to the amount of light lost to the aperture of acceptance detectably changes when the fabric stretches in response to motion, as the motion induced by physiological activity (e.g., heart rate). The system includes at least one radiation source and at least one radiation detector, with the detector disposed in the aperture of acceptance.
Abstract: A process for preparing a hydrocyanation catalyst comprising contacting a bidentate phosphorous-containing ligand with a molar excess of nickel chloride in the presence of a nitrile solvent and a reducing metal which is more electropositive than nickel. Abstract: A method for recovering hexamethylene diamine (HMD) from a mixture comprising HMD, 6-aminocapronitrile (ACN) tetrahydroazepine (THA), and adiponitrile (ADN) is disclosed. The method includes introducing the mixture into a first distillation column, separating as a group the HMD, ACN and at least a portion of the THA as distillate from the ADN. The first distillation column is operated at a temperature and pressure to minimize isomerization of the ADN into 2-cyanocyclopentylideneimine(CPI). The distillate of the first distillation column is introduced into a subsequent distillation column and the HMD is separated from the ACN and THA.
