  • Patent number: 4907562
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for achieving elevated charging of an ignition capacitor in a capacitive type ignition system for internal combustion engines. When starting a cold engine or when starting the engine under other conditions in which the battery capacity is low, activation of the engine starting motor will result in a drop in voltage in the electric system serving both the starting motor and the ignition system. The voltage drop in the electrical system will vary sinusoidally synchronously with the crankshaft rotation, owing to the fact that the starting motor will momentarily subject the electrical system to higher loads when the pistons are located adjacent their top-dead-center position L in the compression stroke. The method solves this problem, by delaying the re-charging of the capacitor until a position is reached in which the voltage drop in the electrical system has its lowest value.

  • Patent number: 4903676
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for improving the starting ability of an internal combustion engine during difficult engine starting conditions that result from cold weather or other external circumstances. Lower than normal engine starting speeds can occur during cold weather, for example. So as not to hinder an engine start, it is essential that the spark plugs be free from deposits and in their best condition. This is achieved by burning off any deposits present on spark plugs during an engine start attempt, when difficult engine starting conditions are detected. During an engine start attempt a comparison circuit ascertains whether or not one or more detected engine parameters have a lower value than in normal engine starting conditions. The comparison circuit sends a signal to the control unit controlling the ignition system, so that the control unit will initiate the generation of a plurality of sparks, instead of a single spark, at ignition time points.

  • Patent number: 4903581
Abstract: An arrangement for preventing mist and ice formation on the side window of a motor vehicle, primarily a rear side-window in the door of the vehicle. A fan, an inlet duct and an outlet air supply duct are arranged between an outer panel and an inner panel in the door of the vehicle below the window. The fan draws air from the vehicle interior through the inlet duct and blows air out toward the window which can thereby be quickly cleared of mist and ice. The outlet from the air supply duct has a plurality of outlet passages with air directed surfaces that are oriented for blowing air in diffreent directions over the window.

  • Patent number: 4889087
Abstract: A tensioning arrangement for a chain incorporated in a transmission and intended to be driven in an endless path. The tensioning arrangement comprises a spring element that acts on a piston to move it outwards to tension the chain when the transmission is not in operation. The tensioning arrangement is also designed with a space that is supplied with oil when the transmission is in operation, in which connection the oil imparts to the piston a limited inward movement to slacken the chain.

  • Patent number: 4886036
Abstract: In a capacitive ignition system for an internal combustion engine, the discharging and charging of an ignition capacitor is controlled by a control unit which actuates a first circuit-breaking element in a discharging circuit and a second circuit-breaking element in a charging circuit. For the purpose of prolonging the ignition sparks so as to reliably ignite, especially in a lean fuel/air mixture, the control unit, at a time following the ordinary ignition time, actuates the second circuit-breaking element in such a way that it is kept conductive simultaneously with the first circuit-breaking element. Current is then supplied from an electrical energy source and via a primary winding. Thereafter, the control unit actuates either the first or second circuit-breaking elements in such a way that the current supply via the primary winding is interrupted, by which means a renewed ignition voltage is obtained which prolongs the ordinary ignition spark.

  • Patent number: 4821591
Abstract: The invention relates to a planetary gear type auxiliary gearbox intended to be inserted between a main gearbox and a transmission to the driving wheels in a motor vehicle. The input shaft of the planetary gear is rigidly connected to a sun wheel, while the output shaft of the planetary gear is rigidly connected to a planet wheel carrier carrying a plurality of planet wheels meshing with the sun wheel. The planetary gear further includes a clutch ring non-rotatably connected to the gearbox housing and a clutch ring non-rotatably connected to the input shaft. The invention is distinguished in that the ring gear of the planetary gear is formed with engagement teeth at its axial ends, in that the clutch rings are arranged on either side of the planet wheels and in that the ring gear is axially movable to enable alternative engagement with the clutch rings by its engagement teeth. The invention results in favorable load distribution with regard to both torque and bending stresses.

  • Patent number: 4817766
Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for damping shifting movements in a mechanical, synchronized multispeed transmission. Where such shifting movements are performed with the aid of a servo-mechanism, for exmaple a pneumatic piston cylinder unit, there is the risk that the gear teeth will be damaged when brought into engagement with each other. In the arrangement according to the invention, a pressure medium-filled damper is used without any communication with a separate pressure medium reservoir, thus eliminating the risk of malfunction due to foam formation in the pressure medium as well as achieving a desirable damping of the shifting movement. The invention is characterized for this purpose in that the piston in the damper is arranged on a piston rod which extends through the cylinder portion of the damper, so that upon relative movement between the piston and the cylinder portion, the volume of the damper filled with pressure medium remains constant.

  • Patent number: 4807733
Abstract: A synchronizing mechanism in a gearbox, preferably for vehicles. The synchronizing mechanism includes an outer synchronizing ring formed with exterior detent teeth and limited rotatability relative a driving disc attached to a shaft. The mechanism also includes an intermediate synchronizing ring which is non-rotatably attached to a gear rotatably mounted on the shaft, and an inner synchronizing ring. The inner and the outer synchronizing rings are joined to each other for torque transmission, the torque acting on the inner synchronizing ring during the synchronizing phase being transferred to the outer synchronizing ring and causing the outer synchronizing ring to rotate relative the driving disc into a detent position. In the detent position, the detent teeth prevent axial displacement of a clutch collar surrounding the driving disc, and thereby engagement of the clutch collar with the gear.
