Abstract: Thin films of cuprous oxide on thin copper foil, when heat treated in an inert atmosphere and quenched, not only exhibit a 10- to 100-fold increase in photovoltaic effects, but also provide ohmic copper-cuprous oxide contacts when selected portions of the oxide film are first subjected to reducing conditions.
Abstract: Specially configured refractory anchors are provided to minimize erosion and increase the useful life of refractory linings in reactors and other vessels. The refractory anchors have a frustroconical base and an overhead crossbar with an intermediate portion and opposite ends. At least one of the opposite ends has an arcuate portion to provide a curved baffle to arcuately deflect and block gases flowing along the refractory lining adjacent to the refractory anchors. Desirably, the crossbar provides an erosion resistant barrier to help protect the structural integrity of the refractory linings. The base extends downwardly from the crossbar and reinforces the refractory lining. The flared sides of the base diverge towards the opposite ends of the crossbar at obtuse angles of inclination to provide pockets for receiving and holding the refractory lining. In one embodient, the refractory anchor has an S-shaped crossbar with reverse bent opposite ends.
Abstract: 2,2',6,6'-Tetramethyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid is prepared by the oxidation of bimesityl and derivatives of the dicarboxylic acid are used in the preparation of polyesters of high molecular weight.
Abstract: A solid-hydrocarbon insoluble, alpha-olefin polymerization catalyst component with superior activity, stereospecificity and morphology characteristics, comprises the product formed by (a) complexing a magnesium alkyl composition with an ortho disubstituted hindered aromatic acid ester; (b) reacting the resulting complex with a compatible precipitation agent to form a solid component; and (c) reacting the resulting solid with a titanium(IV) compound and an electron donor compound in a suitable diluent.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of extruded articles by extruding polyamide-imide polymers and copolymers through melt flow channels and extrusion dies at ever increasing shear rates ranging from 0.1 sec.sup.-1 to about 2000 sec.sup.-1. The extruder barrel and melt flow channel temperatures range from about 480.degree. to about 600.degree. F. and the extrusion die temperatures range from about 575.degree. to about 680.degree. F. Also, the addition of polyetherimides and polysulfones is disclosed. Thin films, thin sheets and hollow tubes are disclosed. All these articles are useful in engineering applications requiring high temperature resistant plastics. Useful applications include use in the aerospace and automobile industry.
Abstract: Increasing the wall strength of a cup having a closed cell foam wall and a solid plastic coating on at least the outer surface thereof by contacting said surface of the cup with a heated mandrel. Apparatus is also shown.
Abstract: Novel fiber fabric laminates impregnated with polyamide-imide and polyamide-imide-phthalamide copolymers are disclosed. The laminates are useful as engineering materials for the replacement of metals.

Abstract: Disclosed is a supervisory control system for remotely monitoring and controlling at least one operational device. The system includes at least one microremote in association with an operational device and includes an input device for receiving a signal indicative of a parameter associated with the operational device and logic circuitry for controlling the operation of the microremote. A microcomputer is in communication with the microremote(s) by way of a communication link, and includes input devices for receiving the signal from the microremote, a memory device for storage of a program or algorithm, and a microprocessor for controlling the operation of the microcomputer and for utilizing the program or algorithm for operation of the supervisory control system. A personality module is removably placed in communication with the microcomputer and includes logic circuitry for controlling the operation of the personality module, and a memory device for storage of at least one program or algorithm.
Abstract: The alignment device or jig is utilized in aligning a shaft of a pelletizer perpendicular with a die face and includes a sensing/scraping assembly which is adapted to travel on a die face and scrape polymer drool off the die face until a scraping edge of the assembly is in constant contact with the die face during rotation of the jig on the shaft of the pelletizer. The scraping edge is mounted on the end of a rod which is spring biased toward the die face and which is axially movable in a bore in the jig and movement of the rod indicates nonperpendicularity of the shaft to the die face. After adjusting the skew of the shaft, cessation of movement of the rod in the bore in the jig will indicate a true perpendicularity of the shaft to the die face.
Abstract: A catalyst system especially suited for polymerizing alpha-olefins in the gas-phase to polymers containing essentially no active chloride comprises (A) a titanium-containing component supported on a hydrocarbon-insoluble magnesium-containing compound in combination with an electron donor compound and (B) a co-catalyst comprising (a) at least one trialkylaluminum compound (b) an aromatic acid ester and (c) an unhindered secondary amine, optionally reacted with a dialkylaluminum hydride, in substantial absence of compounds containing an Al-Cl bond.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a phosphorus-vanadium oxide and a phosphorus-vanadium-co-metal catalyst suitable for the oxidation of butane to maleic anhydride is disclosed. The catalyst is prepared by reacting, in an aqueous medium, a vanadium compound, inorganic acid and, if used, a metal oxide. Ortho-phosphoric acid is then added to form a soluble vanadium-phosphorus or a vanadium-phosphorus-metal catalyst. The acidified water is removed and aliphatic alcohols and either aromatic acids or aromatic anhydrides, or a mixture of these, are added and the alcohols are removed. The solid phosphorus-vanadium, or phosphorus-vanadium-metal oxide is recovered under vacuum.
