Abstract: Greater product yield and quality and continuous upgrading of shale oil with hydrogen-rich, purge mode off gases is attained by pulsing in situ retorts at different phases and intervals. In the process, flow of feed gases to the flame fronts of underground retorts are sequentially stopped and purged while continuously retorting the oil shale to enhance transfer of sensible heat from the combustion zones to the retorting zones and enlarge the separation between the combustion zones and the advancing fronts of the retorting zones. The flame fronts can be purged with steam, water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen, combustion mode off gases, purge mode off gases, reactor off gases, or combinations thereof. The combustion mode off gases and/or purge mode off gases can also be used as part of the feed gas or fuel gas.

Resulting catalyst compositions are useful in dehydrogenating and/or isomerizing hydrocarbons.
Abstract: An electrical excitation circuit is disclosed for a gas laser. The electrical excitation circuit includes a charging circuit connected in series with a pulse forming network between a power source and the laser load. The charging circuit includes a capacitor charged by the power source and a thyratron for transferring voltage to the pulse forming network. Alternatively, the charging circuit includes a capacitor charged upon the firing of a silicon controlled rectifier through a saturable step-up transformer which saturates for transferring voltage to the pulse forming network. The pulse forming network includes a saturable inductor switch positioned with respect to a capacitor so that when the voltage on the capacitor reaches a predetermined level, saturation of the saturable inductor switch releases electrical energy stored in the capacitor to the laser load.

Abstract: A method for filtering spent tar sands from a bitumen and organic solvent solution comprises separating the solution into two streams wherein the bulk of the coarser spent tar sand is in a first stream and has an average particle size of about 10 to about 100 mesh and the bulk of the finer spent tar sand is in a second stream; producing a filter cake by filtering the coarser spent tar sand from the first stream; and filtering the finer spent tar sand from the second stream with the filter cake. The method is particularly useful for filtering solutions of bitumen extracted from bitumen containing diatomite, spent diatomite and organic solvent.

Abstract: A method of converting coal and other solid carbonaceous material to gaseous and liquid products by heating the coal in the presence of the gaseous effluent to a sufficient temperature for pyrolyzing the coal to produce liquid and gaseous products. Thereafter, further gasifying the coal to produce a gaseous effluent to be used in subsequent steps to produce liquid and gaseous products.
Abstract: A process for the oxidation of pseudocumene to trimellitic acid anhydride which comprises catalytic oxidation of pseudocumene with air in the presence of acetic acid in an oxidation zone in the liquid phase and wherein the weight ratio of acetic acid to pseudocumene is in the range of about 1.0-2.5:1.0 and the catalyst comprises one or more heavy metal oxidation catalysts comprising zirconium, cobalt and manganese to provide about 0.2 to about 0.4 weight percent total metals based on pseudocumene and a source of bromine. The addition of the bromine component is controlled to provide a total of about 0.10 to about 0.30 weight percent total bromine based on pseudocumene. The total weight ratio of bromide ions to total metals ions is about 0.7 to about 2.0. The zirconium content is about 1 to about 5% and manganese content is about 14 to about 24% each by weight of the total metals. The reaction temperature is about 100.degree. C. to about 250.degree. C.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of 1,4-bis[2-(4'-carbomethoxystyrenyl)] benzene is disclosed. This process comprises reacting, at a temperature of about 0.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C., in a highly polar anhydrous organic solvent or solvent mixture, or in liquid ammonia, a p-xylylene-bis-(trialkylphosphonium halide) or p-xylylene-bis-(triarylphosphonium halide) with 4-carbomethoxybenzaldehyde, initiated by the slow introduction of an organometallic compound or an inorganic base. Polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate, are copolymerized with about 5 to about 20 parts per million of 1,4-bis[2-(4'-carbomethoxystyrenyl)] benzene. 1,4-bis[2-(4'-carbomethoxystyrenyl)] benzene is useful to provide permanent whiteness to polyesters and polyamides and other synthetic or natural polymers. Polyesters are useful for the manufacture of fibers, films, and related industrial products.
Abstract: A process is provided to produce and stabilize shale oil. In the process, raw oil shale is retorted with heat carrier material to liberate an effluent product stream comprising hydrocarbons and entrained particulates of oil shale dust. In order to minimize polymerization of the product stream and agglomerate the shale dust, the product stream is stabilized with a hydrogen donor quench in the presence of a hydrogen transfer catalyst upon exiting the retort. The quenched stream is subsequently purged of catalyst, dedusted, and upgraded.

Abstract: A method and apparatus operable on a wireline logging cable for sampling and testing bore hole fluids, transmitting the results obtained from such testing to the surface for determination whether or not the particular sample undergoing testing should be collected and brought to the surface. The apparatus comprises a downhole tool having an inflatable double packer for isolating an interval of the bore hole coupled with a hydraulic pump, the pump being utilized sequentially to inflate the double packer and isolate an interval of the bore hole and to remove fluids from the isolated interval to test chamber means where resistivity, redox potential (Eh) and acidity (pH) are determined, and finally to dispose of selected samples to one or more sample container chambers within said tool or to reject them into the bore hole if not selected.
