Abstract: A security document is provided comprising a substrate having a top surface for carrying printed indicia. Background printed matter is printed on the top surface. The background printed matter is made up of a pattern of background elements. A security term is also printed on the top surface of the substrate. The security term is composed of a pattern of security term elements. The background elements or the security term elements, or both, are organized in a non-orthogonal, repetitive pattern. Also, either the background elements or the security term elements are not readily duplicated by a color copier while the other elements are readily duplicated by a color copier. This results in a visually perceptible security term being produced upon a copy of the security document. The security document is "imaging friendly.

Abstract: A metrology standard that is useful for calibrating instruments for the levels of microroughness encountered in semiconductor, disk drive, and related industries today. In advanced applications, this level is about 5 .ANG. rms in a 0.01-1.0 .mu.m.sup.-1 spatial bandwidth range. This standard uses a one-dimensional square wave pattern etched in a silicon wafer to reduce the effects of instrument spatial bandwidth. The standard has approximately a 20 .mu.m pitch with feature depths as small as 8 .ANG..

Abstract: A method of controlling compressor minimum capacity. The method comprises the steps of: measuring a first condition; comparing the first condition to a first setpoint to determine a first conditioned error; modulating compressor capacity relative to the first condition error; measuring a second condition; comparing the second condition to a second setpoint to determine a second condition error; and modulating compressor capacity relative to the second condition error if the magnitude of the second conditioned error is greater than the magnitude of the first conditioned error.

Abstract: A circuit and technique whereby loopback testing is performed in a serial communications device by concurrently transmitting from and receiving data into a single FIFO storage unit. The circuit includes a transmitter, a receiver, a single FIFO, operatively connected to both the transmitter and the receiver, for storing both transmitted and received data at the end of a loopback test. The circuit may be part of a transceiver which may in turn be part of an infrared communications controller installed in a personal computer.

Abstract: A security document is provided comprising human readable transaction data, a plurality of security image elements, a plurality of complementary security image elements, and an encoded information block comprising a plurality of digital glyphs printed thereon. The human readable transaction data printed on the top surface of the substrate forms a full tone image and includes an enhanced security data item. The security image elements printed on the top surface of the substrate and the plurality of complementary security image elements printed on the top surface of the substrate define a security image. The encoded information block comprises a plurality of digital glyphs printed on the top surface of the substrate and comprises encoded transaction data corresponding to at least a portion of the human readable transaction data.

Abstract: A comprehensive document audit system and a process for generating document field reports utilizing a computer programmed to sort document data indicative of the characteristics of a group of selected documents are provided. A digital controller is programmed to cause document data indicative of the characteristics of a selected document to be received and sorted and is programmed to cause sorted document data to be saved. A document data entry device and a document field report generator are in communication with the digital controller. A system operator collects a group of documents and assigns document characteristic information to the documents. The operator identifies a set of document data indicative of the characteristics of each document and inputs the document data into a computer programmed to cause the document data to be sorted and saved. The computer sorts the document data and a field report is generated from the sorted document data.

Abstract: An air conditioning unit comprising: a housing having a first half and a second half; the first half of the housing containing an indoor heat exchange coil and a blower moving air through said coil from at least a housing inlet to a housing outlet. The blower discharges into a diffuser duct having a diffuser section with a first segment and a second segment where the first and second segments have first and second respective and differing angles of diffusion.

Abstract: A security ink is provided containing a colored dye, a colored pigment, and a fluorescent pigment. The ink may be printed on a number of security documents such as checks and may be passed through printing devices such as laser printers without the problem of damage to the ink the printed image, or the printer. The fluorescent pigment in the ink will fluoresce when the document is exposed to ultraviolet light and may be used to provide an authentication feature.

Abstract: Security paper, security documents made from the security paper, and processes for making the security paper, are provided. A groove is formed in paper and a security element is positioned or bonded within the groove. A coating is applied over the security element so that the coating covers at least a portion of the security element and is coplanar with the surface of the paper. The security element may include any combination of security features for verification of document authenticity.

Abstract: A sanitary water valve in the form of a single shut-off valve or a mixing valve having one or more operating handles, especially a single-lever mixing valve with water passages and at least one water outlet. A valve body is provided that is made of a metal alloy that contains lead and that serves for receiving control components, especially components integrated into a cartridge. Water inlet lines are connected to the cartridge via an insert that is disposed adjacent to the cartridge. To prevent contact between water flowing through the parts of the valve that are made of brass alloys containing lead, the inner surfaces of the water passages are protected by a water proof protection made of lead-free material that is non-hazardous to health.

Abstract: A tire tread that is applicable to retread a worn tire carcass. The tire tread includes a cured tread portion having a first shoulder and a second shoulder. A first uncured wing portion extends from the first shoulder and a second uncured wing portion extends from the second shoulder. Further, an end section at each end of the tire tread portion is uncured. When the tire tread is wrapped around the tire carcass to be formed to the tire carcass and form a tire retread, the first and second wing portions extend down the side walls of the tire carcass and the uncured end sections of the tire tread contact each other. The tire carcass is placed within an autoclave, and the autoclave is heated under pressure such that the tire tread is cross-linked to the tire carcass. During the autoclaving step, the uncured wing portions are cured and cross-linked to the side walls of the tire carcass, and the uncured end portions are cured and cross-linked to each other.

Abstract: The invention concerns colored aluminum pigments comprising flake-form aluminum substrates which are coated with a metal oxide layer. The pigments are produced by a process which involves the steps of mixing a ground color pigment with a flake-form aluminum in the presence of a solvent. A metal acid ester is then added to the mixture and is then hydrolyzed to form a metal oxide layer on the aluminum substrate, followed by removal of the solvent and drying of the pigment. The pigments are useful as special-effect pigments in paints, lacquers, coatings, plastic materials, printing inks and cosmetic preparation.

Abstract: A multipart form and label combination is provided which may be printed in a single pass through a printer. The combination includes a face ply which may be printed with nonvariable and variable indicia, a film ply, and an optional intermediate liner ply. The combination also includes first, second or third removable portions such as, for example, a label, receipt or postcard. In a preferred embodiment, the multipart form and label combination is used as an inspection form.

Abstract: An electronic ballast circuit for igniting, supplying and dimming a gas discharge lamp which comprises an oscillation control circuit, an IR2155 self-oscillating half-bridge driver, a dimming control circuit, a load circuit including at least one gas discharge lamp and an over-current protection circuit, wherein the oscillation control circuit controls a current through the lamp by pulse width modulation of a drive signal during a pre-heating stage and the normal operation to control the dimming of the gas discharge lamp.
