Abstract: A biologically-inspired model for sequence representation, method of construction and application of such models, and systems incorporating same are provided. The model captures the statistical nature of sequences and uses that for sequence encoding, recognition, and recall. The model can be trained in real time, has few tunable parameters, and is highly parallelizable, which ensures that it can scale up to very large problems. Applications of the model to word and speech recognition, machine leaning, robotics, computational bioinformatics, genetics datasets, and other sequence processing pipelines are provided.

Abstract: An apparatus including a heating element and a sublimation vessel disposed adjacent the heating element such that the heating element heats a portion thereof. A collection vessel is removably disposed within the sublimation vessel and is open on an end thereof. A crucible is configured to sealingly position a solid mixture against the collection vessel.
Abstract: The wear status of a micro-endmill tool may be inferred by monitoring the chip production rate of the tool in operation. Chips may be extracted from a work area, captured on an adhesive surface, imaged, and counted to determine the chip production rate. When the rate of chip production falls, the feed rate of the micro-endmill may be modified to a level suitable for the current state of tool wear. In this manner, costly and inconvenient work stoppages to evaluate the wear status of a tool are eliminated.

Abstract: A neural prosthetic device can selectively deliver light to different cortical layers, at different depths, in the brain. The device includes LEDs and corresponding waveguides that can extend into the brain. At least two of the waveguides have different lengths. The neural prosthetic device or other devices can be manufactured by changing the hydrophilicity or lyophilicity of a portion of a substrate layer, then depositing uncured polymer on the treated portion of the substrate layer. The uncured polymer flows under the influence of surface tension to form a volume. The volume is shaped as a dome that extends laterally to a boundary between the treated and untreated portions. The polymer is cured in discrete regions through the substrate layer. The discrete regions extend longitudinally from the substrate layer to a curved surface of the dome. The uncured portion of the polymer is removed. The cured regions form the waveguides.

Abstract: The present invention relates to compositions and methods for providing RNA interference (RNAi) vectors comprising trigalactosyldiacylglycerol (tgd) biosynthesis enzyme constructs for increasing oil content of plants. Further, the use of tgd RNAi silencing vectors in combination with co-expression of heterologous oil regulating transcription factors, such as WRINKLED1, are contemplated to overcome the reduced growth and variable levels of embryonic lethality in plants with reduced TGD protein. Additionally, plants having reduced APS1, a gene encoding a major catalytic isoform of the small subunit of AGPase (AGP(?) plants), co-expressing a heterologous oil modulating transcription factor are contemplated for use in combination with plants having reduced TGD. Oil harvested from vegetative tissues of plants comprising vectors and genes of the present invention is contemplated for use in biofuel and biodiesel products.

Abstract: Innovations in the construction and use of variable-input-length tweakable ciphers (“VILTCs”). In some cases, a VILTC uses an initialization vector that is protected from exposure outside an encryption/decryption system in order to provide enhanced security with efficient performance. For example, a system for encryption and/or decryption includes two fixed-input-length tweakable block ciphers (“FIL TBCs”) and a VILTC. The first FIL TBC is adapted to produce a fixed-length initialization vector. The VILTC is adapted to produce a variable-length output string using the fixed-length initialization vector as a tweak. The second FIL TBC is adapted to produce a fixed-length output string. In this way, the first FIL TBC and the second FIL TBC protect the fixed-length initialization vector from exposure outside the system. In other cases, a VILTC is used for a reliable and efficient implementation of authenticated encryption/decryption with associated data.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved means of treating tracheobronchitis, bronchiectasis and pneumonia in the nosocomial patient, preferably with aerosolized anti gram-positive and anti-gram negative antibiotics administered in combination or in seriatim in reliably sufficient amounts for therapeutic effect. In one aspect, the invention assures this result when aerosol is delivered into the ventilator circuit. In one embodiment the result is achieved mechanically. In another embodiment, the result is achieved by aerosol formulation. In another aspect, the invention assures the result when aerosol is delivered directly to the airways distal of the ventilator circuit. The treatment means eliminates the dosage variability that ventilator systems engender when aerosols are introduced via the ventilator circuit.

Abstract: A method includes obtaining information associated with a forming operation involving a manufacturing machine having a tool that contacts material and simulating deformation of the material based on the information. Simulating the deformation of the material includes evaluating combinations of shear planes within an initial structure of the material. Simulating the deformation of the material also includes predicting a mode of deformation comprising one or more of the shear planes along which the initial structure of the material will likely deform. Simulating the deformation of the material further includes calculating a deformed shape of the material after an increment of deformation along the predicted mode of deformation.
