  • Patent number: 9309863
Abstract: A maximally efficient vertical axis wind turbine (MEVAWT) includes a rotatable circular frame having upper and lower concentric flat rings or disks which support a plurality of, typically three, four, five or six, pivotable cascades, each including a plurality of fixed, configurable airfoils. The airfoils preferably include a single, pivotable trailing flap and may include lateral extensions. The center and periphery of the lower ring are supported in suitable bearings to facilitate free rotation of the frame. Wind direction and velocity sensors provide data utilized to control drive mechanisms which orient each cascade and the flap of each airfoil to maximize the resultant power produced by the turbine.

  • Patent number: 9311527
Abstract: A gaze direction determining system and method is provided. A two-camera system may detect the face from a fixed, wide-angle camera, estimates a rough location for the eye region using an eye detector based on topographic features, and directs another active pan-tilt-zoom camera to focus in on this eye region. A eye gaze estimation approach employs point-of-regard (PoG) tracking on a large viewing screen. To allow for greater head pose freedom, a calibration approach is provided to find the 3D eyeball location, eyeball radius, and fovea position. Both the iris center and iris contour points are mapped to the eyeball sphere (creating a 3D iris disk) to get the optical axis; then the fovea rotated accordingly and the final, visual axis gaze direction computed.

  • Patent number: 9309496
Abstract: The present invention demonstrates that SALL4A and SALL4B are strong positive regulators of hematopoetic stem cell expansion. HSCs receiving expression of SALL4A or SALL4B are able to achieve a high-level of expansion. Cultures of SALL4-transduced cells results in extensive HSC expansion with over 1000-fold higher levels than controls within 2 to 3 weeks and expanded HSCs show no or very little maturation. Moreover, the expansion occurs quite rapidly with significant HSC growth in just a few days. In addition, SALL4-induced HSC expansion exhibits no impairment of hematopoietic cell differentiation. SALL4 appears to function in the maintenance of an undifferentiated proliferation state and block cell differentiation for HSCs.

  • Patent number: 9313455
Abstract: An intelligent sensor assisted system that dynamically adapts to the video streaming needs of a network or sub networks of users in order to facilitate collaboration. This automated audio/video distribution system includes an RFID sensor system that allows the system to intelligently activate the cameras/audio devices located at a zone according to user's needs. The system detects an RFID tag that is associated with a user. The system identifies a group ID of the RFID tag. The system identifies all users in the cyberspace that belong to the group. The system activates the streaming of audio/video to capture the user's activities at the zone. The system then transmits the audio/video feed to remote users in the cyberspace who share the same Group ID.

  • Patent number: 9313463
Abstract: A video surveillance system includes a plurality of video sources, at least one processing server in communication with the video sources, and at least one monitoring station viewing video from the video sources. The video sources are distributed over a target area to be monitored by the surveillance system and are attached to a video network. The processing server allocates bandwidth to the video sources with an accuracy function which provides event/object detection accuracy as a function of image/video quality transferred over the network. The image accuracy is the accuracy with which the processing server identifies features in a video image. Bandwidth is allocated by optimizing the overall event/object detection accuracy by adjusting image/video quality for each video source optionally subject to the dynamic network conditions experienced by each video source.

  • Patent number: 9308511
Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, and systems for fabricating porous materials using thixotropic gels. A shear force is applied to a thixotropic material causing the material to flow. Multiple components are added to the thixotropic material while applying the shear force causing the multiple components to be distributed in the material. The shear force is removed such that the static properties of the thixotropic material in the absence of the shear force retain a distribution of the multiple components in the thixotropic material to form a composite gel material that includes liquid within a network of inter-connected solid particles that include the distributed plurality of components. The liquid in the composite gel material is removed to form a porous composite material.

  • Patent number: 9306151
Abstract: Threshold gates and related circuitry are disclosed. In one embodiment, a threshold gate includes a threshold realization element and a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) element. The MTJ element is switchable from a first resistive state to a second resistive state. To realize a threshold function with the MTJ element, the threshold realization element is configured to switch the magnetic tunnel junction element from the first resistive state to the second resistive state in accordance with the threshold function. In this manner, the threshold gate may implement a threshold function that provides an output just like a complex Boolean function requiring several Boolean gates.

  • Patent number: 9305733
Abstract: The use of the electride form of 12CaO-7Al2O3, or C12A7, as a low work function electron emitter in a hollow cathode discharge apparatus is described. No heater is required to initiate operation of the present cathode, as is necessary for traditional hollow cathode devices. Because C12A7 has a fully oxidized lattice structure, exposure to oxygen does not degrade the electride. The electride was surrounded by a graphite liner since it was found that the C12A7 electride converts to it's eutectic (CA+C3A) form when heated (through natural hollow cathode operation) in a metal tube.

  • Patent number: 9303073
Abstract: The invention relates to the development of chimeric OspA molecules for use in a new Lyme vaccine. More specifically, the chimeric OspA molecules comprise the proximal portion from one OspA serotype, together with the distal portion from another OspA serotype, while retaining antigenic properties of both of the parent polypeptides. The chimeric OspA molecules are delivered alone or in combination to provide protection against a variety of Borrelia genospecies. The invention also provides methods for administering the chimeric OspA molecules to a subject in the prevention and treatment of Lyme disease or borreliosis.
