Abstract: A person support apparatus, such as a bed, stretcher, recliner, cot, or the like, includes a frame, a plurality of load cells, a support surface supported by the load cells, a detection circuit, and a controller. The controller determines if any of the load cells are in an error state based upon information from the detection circuit. If the load cells include memory having calibration data stored therein, the controller communicates with the memory and uses the calibration data to determine an amount of weight supported on the surface. The detection circuit may include one or more Wheatstone bridges wherein the controller monitors voltages between midpoints of the Wheatstone bridges. The load cells may include an activation lead that is monitored by the detection circuit and a sensor lead that is used by the controller to determine an amount of weight supported on the patient support apparatus.

Abstract: A patient transport apparatus operable by a user for transporting a patient along stairs. A seat section is coupled to a support structure supporting a track assembly having a belt. A motor selectively generates torque to drive the belt. A user interface is arranged for engagement by the user, and has a direction input control for selecting a drive direction of the motor, and an activation input control for operating the motor to drive the belt. A controller in communication with the motor and the user interface is configured to limit operation of the motor in response to user engagement of the activation input control preceding engagement of the direction input control to prevent driving the belt, and to permit operation of the motor in response to user engagement of the activation input control following engagement of the direction input control to drive the belt in a selected drive direction.

Abstract: A mobile cart that holds a bag for receiving solid waste generated during a medical or surgical procedure. The cart includes a sensor that monitors whether or not an object containing metal is placed in the bag. A processor monitors the signal output by the sensor. If the sensor signal indicates that an object with a minimal amount of metal is placed in the bag, the processor momentarily asserts an audible alarm and continuously asserts a light alarm. The light alarm remains asserted until turned off. If, while the light alarm is on, the sensor signal indicates a second object with the minimal amount of waste is placed in the container, the processor again momentarily asserts the audible alarm. This provides notice that it may be necessary to investigate the contents of the bag to determine if not one but two or more objects were inadvertently discarded.

Abstract: A tool path generator utilizes a solid body model of a volume to generate a tool path for a manipulator to remove material of the volume with an energy applicator in a semi-autonomous mode. A material logger monitors movement of the energy applicator according to a cutting path taken by a practitioner in the manual mode, identifies material of the volume to which the energy applicator has been applied in the manual mode, and updates the solid body model based on the identified material. The tool path generator modifies the tool path based on the updated solid body model such that, for the semi-autonomous mode, the modified tool path accounts for the identified material of the volume to which the energy applicator has been applied in the manual mode.
Abstract: A wire driver for driving a wire or pin into living tissue includes a rotating drive shaft, a collet, and a wedge. The collet is held fast to the drive shaft and has a plurality of feet radially moveable relative for grasping the wire or pin. Each foot has an outwardly located curved ankle surface with a concave or convex profile. The wedge is disposed over the collet and is at least partly inside the bore of the drive shaft. The wedge rotates with the drive shaft and has a tapered inner surface in selective engagement with the curved ankle surfaces. The wedge is moveable longitudinally relative to the collet feet to bear against the feet and cause the feet to grasp the wire or pin. The wedge has a release position in which the wedge is spaced from the collet feet, releasing the wire or pin.
Abstract: A patient transport apparatus for use with a vehicle, comprising a lift mechanism between a base and a support frame to move between an extended configuration defining a first distance and a retracted configuration defining a second distance. An interface generates a user signal. A sensor generates a sensor signal corresponding to force acting on the base relative to the support frame. A controller determines if the user signal corresponds to an extend or retract command; determines if the force acting on the base has exceeded a predetermined threshold value based on the sensor signal; drives the lift mechanism toward the extended configuration where the user signal corresponds to the extend command and toward the retracted configuration where the user signal corresponds to the retract command; and interrupts driving the lift mechanism to stop motion of the lift mechanism in response to the sensor signal exceeding the predetermined threshold value.

Abstract: Control console for a powered surgical tool (310) that includes a transformer (250) with a secondary winding (264) across which the tool drive signal is present. Also internal to the transformer is a matched current source that consists of leakage control winding (246) and a capacitor. The current sourced by the matched current source at least partially cancels out leakage current that may be present.
Abstract: A caregiver assistance system is disclosed for helping caregivers manage the care of existing bed sores and/or reduce the risk of a patient developing bed sores. The system may also help the caregiver to perform rounding tasks and/or to reduce the likelihood of patient falls. The system comprises a server application in communication with the patient's bed and one or more mobile electronic devices (e.g. smart phones). The mobile devices receive individual assessments of a plurality of bed sore risk factors and forward them to the server. The server generates bed sore risk scores from the answers and forward them to an EMR server. The server may also determine one or more risk reduction steps, display them on the mobile electronic device, and/or forward them to the patients' beds for implementation thereon. Additional bed sore information may be captured and sent to the EMR.

The first and second evacuation interfaces pivot between first and second unfolded positions and first and second upright positions, respectively, and move between first and second lengthened positions and first and second shortened positions, respectively. The first and second evacuation interfaces are disposed in the cavity when the first and second evacuation interfaces are in the first and second unfolded positions and the first and second shortened positions, respectively, and configured to be grasped and lifted by the first and second caregivers when the first and second evacuation interfaces are in the first and second upright positions, respectively.
Abstract: A system for restoring height of a vertebral body with a balloon and stabilizing the vertebral body with bone cement. A delivery tube extends from a handle and may be formed from a flexible polymer and a radiopaque filler. The flexible polymer maintains a patent lumen along a curve so as to receive sequential introduction of the balloon and the bone cement to within the vertebral body at a location offset from a longitudinal axis. The radiopaque filler provides for at least a portion of the delivery tube being radiopaque under fluoroscopic visualization. The radiopaque filler may be barium, and the delivery tube may be constructed from coextruding the flexible polymer with the barium. Visual indicia on the handle may indicate a position of the delivery tube relative to another component of the system such as an access cannula. The visual indicia may indicate a direction of the curve.

Abstract: A bone graft loading system includes a loading funnel, syringe, cannula, plunger, and loading tool. The loading funnel includes an interior passageway to receive the cannula and a syringe docking portion. The syringe may be coupled to the syringe docking portion so that it extends along a longitudinal axis that is transverse to the longitudinal axes of the cannula and the loading funnel. A user may advance bone graft from the syringe to a holding area of the loading funnel. The user may then move the loading tool through the holding area and into the interior space of the cannula to load the cannula with bone graft. This process may be repeated until the cannula is fully loaded with bone graft. The cannula and the plunger inside the cannula may then be removed from the loading funnel and coupled to an injector assembly for use in surgery.
