  • Patent number: 11294579
Abstract: Aspects of a multi-protocol storage device including a controller are provided which handle mode switches after a shutdown resulting in a large amount of unfinished work by phasing the work during and after initialization. The controller operates in a first mode such as an SD mode and a second mode such as a NVMe mode. In the event of a shutdown in the second mode resulting in unfinished work, the controller initializes in the first mode. During initialization, the controller determines whether a completion time for the unfinished work exceeds an initialization time in the first mode. When the completion time exceeds the initialization time, the controller performs a first portion of the work during initialization and postpones performance of at least a second portion of the unfinished work until after initialization. As a result, initialization timeouts in the first mode due to the unfinished work may be avoided.

  • Patent number: 11294824
Abstract: Aspects of a storage device including a memory and a controller are provided which allows for reduced latency of read-modify-write operations when a data length from a host is unaligned at two ends with a write length of the controller. When the controller receives from a host device a write command for data, the controller performs a first read of a head portion and a second read of a tail portion immediately after performing the first read. The controller performs a single L2P translation of one of the head or tail portions, senses the data associated with the head and tail portions once into latches, and reads the data from the latches for both the head and tail portions without performing another data sense. The controller then writes the data in response to the write command after performing the first read and the second read.

  • Patent number: 11294813
Abstract: Aspects of a storage device including a cache having a logical-to-physical (L2P) mapping table, a scratchpad buffer, and a controller are provided to optimize cache storage of L2P mapping information. A controller receives a random pattern of logical addresses and identifies each logical address within one of multiple probability distributions. Based on a frequency of occurrence of each logical address, the controller stores a control page including the logical address within either a partition of the L2P mapping table which is associated with the corresponding probability distribution, or in the scratchpad buffer. The frequency of occurrence of each logical address is determined based on whether the logical address is within one or more standard deviations from a mean of each probability distribution. As a result, frequently occurring control pages are stored in cache, while infrequently occurring control pages are stored in the scratchpad buffer.

  • Patent number: 11296044
Abstract: Structures and techniques provide bond enhancement in microelectronics by trapping contaminants and byproducts during bonding processes, and arresting cracks. Example bonding surfaces are provided with recesses, sinks, traps, or cavities to capture small particles and gaseous byproducts of bonding that would otherwise create detrimental voids between microscale surfaces being joined, and to arrest cracks. Such random voids would compromise bond integrity and electrical conductivity of interconnects being bonded. In example systems, a predesigned recess space or predesigned pattern of recesses placed in the bonding interface captures particles and gases, reducing the formation of random voids, thereby improving and protecting the bond as it forms. The recess space or pattern of recesses may be placed where particles collect on the bonding surface, through example methods of determining where mobilized particles move during bond wave propagation.

  • Patent number: 11296053
Abstract: Direct bonded stack structures for increased reliability and improved yields in microelectronics are provided. Structural features and stack configurations are provided for memory modules and 3DICs to reduce defects in vertically stacked dies. Example processes alleviate warpage stresses between a thicker top die and direct bonded dies beneath it, for example. An etched surface on the top die may relieve warpage stresses. An example stack may include a compliant layer between dies. Another stack configuration replaces the top die with a layer of molding material to circumvent warpage stresses. An array of cavities on a bonding surface can alleviate stress forces. One or more stress balancing layers may also be created on a side of the top die or between other dies to alleviate or counter warpage. Rounding of edges can prevent stresses and pressure forces from being destructively transmitted through die and substrate layers. These measures may be applied together or in combinations in a single package.

  • Patent number: 11294807
Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a method and device for reduce the amount of energy used to revert data within a storage device to a consistent state after a power loss event. Once power is lost from a host device, and prior to complete shutdown, a log is created within non-volatile memory (NVM) of the storage device. The log contains logical block addresses (LBAs) corresponding to data that experienced a write failure. At the next power-on event, the log is checked to see if any LBAs are present. If LBAs are present in the log, then the data that experienced a write failure can be properly written to the storage device.
