Abstract: A method of cleaning a media preheater that is positioned in the media path of a printer is disclosed. The media preheater has a fixed heater and a movable plate array biased toward the heater such that printer media passing between the plate array and the heater is compressed therebetween and heated. The preheater may be positioned upstream of a print head and downstream of a media advancing mechanism in the media path. More than one plate may be provided in the plate array to accommodate non-planarity of the heater or the printing media. The method elevates the temperature of the contact surface of the preheater to a cleaning temperature that is greater than the operating temperature and then passes a chase sheet over the surface to remove contamination from the preheater surface.

Abstract: Methods for producing logic signal displays for an instrument known as a "logic oscilloscope" are disclosed. A digital input signal is first sampled as an analog signal to produce multi-bit digital samples that are representative of the amplitude of the input signal over time. The multi-bit digital samples are then processed using interpolative techniques to ascertain when the input signal crossed a hypothetical logic level threshold or pair of thresholds and when the signal was in one logic state or the other. The resulting transition times and logic states are then used as the basis for generating a variety of digital displays, including logic timing diagrams, state table displays, and cursor readouts similar to those available in a logic analyzer. Setup and hold time violations and measurements may also be obtained using this information.
Abstract: A 3-2 pulldown detector for a video compression encoder initially converts each frame of an input video signal that includes converted film material as well as original video material into top and bottom fields. Consecutive fields from the top and bottom fields are then input to respective sum of absolute difference circuits, the outputs of which are subtracted from each other to produce a difference signal. The difference signal is processed to remove spikes that represent scene changes and to generate a flag signal during the periods of the input video signal when the converted film material is present. The flag signal is then used by a frame rate reduction circuit to eliminate the repeated fields in the converted film material prior to input to a video encoder that outputs a compressed video signal.
Abstract: A method and an apparatus reduce cross talk effects in electro-optical addressing structures. In a preferred embodiment, a flat panel liquid crystal display system (10) includes a layer (28) of frequency-sensitive liquid crystal material having a dielectric anisotropy that approaches zero for signal frequencies greater than a characteristic threshold frequency f.sub.th. The frequency-sensitive liquid crystal material is nonresponsive to components of signals with frequencies greater than the threshold frequency f.sub.th. A data driver (32) delivers inverted data signals (62) and conventional, noninverted data signals (64) to each of the multiple display elements (16) during successive first and second time intervals, respectively. As a result, the data driver generates cross talk having frequency components greater than the characteristic threshold frequency f.sub.th of the liquid crystal material.
Abstract: To provide an improved non-additive mixer, a first mixer mixes first and second video signals according to a mixer control signal derived in a new way. The first and second video signals are applied, respectively, to first and second chrominance (blocking) filters. The resulting first and second luminance signals are applied, respectively, to first and second summing circuits, where offsets may be applied to either or both of them. The difference is then taken between the first offset luminance signal and the second offset luminance signal to produce a difference luminance signal. The difference luminance signal is then multiplied by a gain control signal to produce the mixer control signal. The mixer control signal can also be used to control a second mixer, thereby providing a channel for keying information that is non-additively mixed according to the luminance content of the video signal that the key information is associated with.
Abstract: An oscilloscope comprises a trigger circuit for initiating display of the waveform of an input signal in response to a trigger event, at least one detection circuit responsive to the input signal for detecting occurrence of an anomalous event therein, and a counter for reporting the number of occurrences of the anomalous event that have been detected.
Abstract: A halftoning method characterized by two nonaligned halftone screens, one for black and the other for the subtractive primary colors cyan, magenta, and yellow, produces multi-color images on a color laser printer. The black screen is the inverse of, i.e., in reverse fill order to, the subtractive primary colors screen. The halftone pattern is a vertical line screen. In a preferred embodiment, the cells are grouped on hexagonal centers and aligned along X and Y coordinate axes. The dots are grouped in the linear direction of print medium motion. The grouping of dots reduces the effect of halftone screen misregistration, and the cell alignment in X and Y results in fewer high frequency artifacts. Inverting the black screen increases the number of possible chromatic mixed colors that include black, increases color uniformity and reduces the frequency of white "holes" in the printed images.
Abstract: An electronic instrument with a housing having a battery compartment. The housing has a probe connector oriented on a probe axis, so that a probe may be connected to the instrument via the connector for interfacing with a device under test. A removable battery cover encloses the battery compartment, and has a probe aperture registered with the probe connector, so that a probe may be connected when the battery cover is installed. To prevent removal of the battery cover when a probe is connected to the probe connector, the battery cover is constrained against movement along the probe axis. In addition, the battery cover may contain a conductive safety element necessary to complete a circuit between the battery and other components in the instrument, so that the batteries are capable of delivering power only when the cover is properly installed.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a temperature stable frequency at reduced cost. Advantage is taken of an existing, relatively temperature insensitive, low frequency and low cost watch crystal and an existing, high frequency, low cost, but relatively temperature sensitive system clock. A calibration module coupled to the watch crystal and clock calibrates the watch crystal to a reference frequency at a reference temperature and calibrates the clock to the watch crystal at an operating temperature, to relate the clock frequency to the reference frequency at any operating temperature and thereby provide a high precision, relatively temperature insensitive time or frequency base at low cost.
Abstract: Resins and waxes made by reacting selected nucleophiles, including alcohols and/or amines, with an isocyanate are disclosed. The order of addition of the isocyanate and the different nucleophiles can tailor the distribution of diurethane, mixed urethane/urea, and/or di-urea molecules in the final resin product. The isocyanate-derived resin and wax materials are useful as ingredients as phase change ink carrier compositions used to make phase change ink jet inks.

Abstract: A video error/distortion checker generates a difference signal from an input repetitive digital signal and a reference data signal corresponding to the input repetitive digital signal. The difference signal is compared with maximum and minimum threshold values to generate an error signal when the difference signal exceeds either threshold value. The difference signal also is used to generate a running range value that is compared with a total range value to produce the error signal when during one iteration of the repetitive digital signal the difference signal exceeds a specified range defined by the total range value. The error signal is suitably displayed, either visually or alphanumerically or both, so that an operator may recognize the type, severity and location of errors in the repetitive digital signal.
