Abstract: A refractory compound coating (188) for electrodes is sputter resistant, has a low work function so that it is a good emitter of secondary electrons, is very resistant to oxidation, and is easy to apply by way of electrophoresis. More specifically, cathode electrodes (162) are used in a plasma addressing structure (10). The coating is preferably formed by electrophoretic deposition of particles (184) of at least one refractory compound along with a frit. The coating is subsequently baked to fuse the frit and bond the electrophoretically deposited particles to the electrodes.

Abstract: An ink jet print head (10) has a supply channel (14, 24, 52) connecting an ink source with an upper manifold (60U) and a lower manifold (60L). Each manifold has a tapered structure. From each manifold multiple inlet channels (36, 34, 44, 54) each lead to a respective pressure chamber (28) from which an outlet channel (40, 38, 46, 56, 62, 76, 82) leads to nozzles (88) from which droplets of liquid ink are expelled as a result of the action of a pressure transducer on the pressure chamber. Each manifold is separated from the supply channel by a baffle structure (92) that includes three baffles (94) formed by alternating plates (64, 78) having an open manifold with plates (58, 72) having a blocked manifold. The baffle structure reduces jetting nonuniformity by damping pressure displacement waves in the ink caused by the expulsion of ink droplets. The baffle structure also promotes effective heat transfer from the print head to ink being drawn in to the print head from the ink source.

Abstract: A digital test signal generator that provides for real-time parameter adjustment of digitally synthesized video test signals has a pair of test signal memories coupled one at a time via address and data multiplexers to a test signal synthesizer. Also coupled to the pair of test signal memories via the address and data multiplexers is a processor. The processor is coupled to one memory while the test signal synthesizer is coupled to the other. When a user changes a parameter at a front panel, the processor loads the one memory with new data representing the selected video test signal as modified by the parameter change. The processor than toggles the address and data multiplexers so that the one memory is coupled to the test signal synthesizer to generate the modified video test signal according to the changed parameter while the other memory is coupled to the processor ready to be loaded with data according to a next parameter change.
Abstract: A roller for applying pressure to a final receiving medium to transfer and fix an ink image thereon is provided. The roller includes a core surrounded by an inner elastomeric layer. A tubular elastomeric sleeve having a first, relatively high hardness surrounds the inner elastomeric layer. A thin outer compliant elastomeric layer is affixed to the outer surface of the sleeve and has a second hardness that is less than the first hardness of the sleeve. The outer compliant elastomeric layer of the roller has sufficient compliance to contact adjacent ink pixels having first and second heights and fix the ink pixels to the final receiving medium.
Abstract: A video sharpening circuit for improving video signal detail or providing a unique visual effect extracts the high frequency portion from an input video signal. The high frequency portion is then variably amplified and added to the input video signal or to a reference video signal. The resulting output video signal has the high frequency detail restored to produce an aesthetically pleasing effect.
Abstract: An ink-jet printer that prints using an interlace ratio of higher than 2:1. The print head has an internozzle spacing of N, while the interlace ratio n:1 is selected so that n is an integer divisor of N+2 or N+4 or is equal to N+1. Multiple interlaced images can be "stitched" together by printing a first interlaced image, moving the print head and printing a second interlaced image such that the head of the second image overlaps with the tail of the first interlaced image.
Abstract: An integrated digital processing device and method for examining the operation thereof. An integrated multiple digital processing device has externally-accessible tag connections which provide signals representative of what circuit has access to external memory used by the processing device. The processing device includes a plurality of digital processor circuits, a DRAM refresh logic circuit, externally-accessible connections for receiving memory access signals from an external processor, and an arbitration circuit for determining which of the digital processor circuits, refresh logic circuit or external processor may have access to the external memory. The signals on the tag connections are provided by the arbitration circuit, and indicate which of the aforementioned circuits has access to the external memory at any moment.
Abstract: Gray scale ink jet printing method and apparatus produce a high quality image having varying color intensities. This is achieved by mixing a colored phase change ink with varying amounts of a clear phase change ink base, thereby producing multiple gray scale levels of each color. The mixing either can be performed prior to placement of the phase change ink in the printer, or can be performed within the printer to produce different levels of color intensity during the printing process.

Abstract: An improved fusing apparatus for fixing or fusing images on print media is disclosed wherein a relatively small pressure applying surface, such as the surface of a rotatable pressure wheel, is lubricated with a lubricating medium such as silicone oil, and engages the printed image to apply pressure and fuse the image to the image receiving substrate. The fusing apparatus is mounted for reciprocal back and forth movement across the printed image on the image receiving substrate or medium to fuse the image into the substrate and flatten or smooth the upper exposed surface of the ink image. The pressure wheel is passed in multiple overlapping passes over the printed image to uniformly fuse the image into the media.

Abstract: An electrical signal jitter and wander measurement system (30) operates in real time and digitally controls bandwidths over which the measurements are performed. A digital phase-lock loop ("PLL") (34) includes a phase detector (44), low pass filters (48, 56), an analog-to-digital converter ("ADC") (54), a digital signal processor ("DSP") (32), a direct digital synthesizer ("DDS") (38), and a tracking oscillator (39). The phase detector receives an input signal that is compared with a signal derived from the DDS. The phase detector signal contains wander and jitter data that are filtered and digitized by the ADC. The DSP receives the data and performs a proportional integral control function to lock the PLL by digitally controlling the DDS frequency. The DDS generates a clock signal at a precise rate determined by the phase accumulation registers. The tracking oscillator locks to multiples of the DDS frequency to increase the resolution of the phase measurement.

Abstract: A digital video recorder employing standard hard disk arrays employs a caching system to enable continuous video data to be supplied to and provided from the standard disk drives which may not be adapted for continuous data stream operation. The system is implemented as an array of disk drives and includes cache management functions for governing disk read and write operations. A predictor enables the cache to predict disk reads and disk writes and to maintain the cache based on the predictions. Redundancy enables playback in the event of failure of a drive in the array and also provides improved playback data retrieval time.

Abstract: A phase measurement apparatus and method for measuring electrical signal jitter and wander operates in real time and digitally controls bandwidths over which the measurements are performed. The apparatus includes a digital phase-lock loop (PLL) for generating phase difference signal data having first and second frequency components above and below the loop bandwidth of the phase locked loop. An analog-to-digital converter digitizes the analog phase difference signal from the phase detector. A digital signal processor (DSP) receives the digital data and performs a loop filter function for generating frequency update values to the DDS for phase locking the PLL to an incoming signal. The DSP performs an integration function on the loop filter function output to generate the second frequency components. The first and second frequency components are combined in a summing circuit and filtered in digitally programmable low and high pass filters for establishing measurement bands for measuring the phase difference.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing self-diagnostic information from a circuit board. A circuit board is provided with an on-board processor, an on-board ROM containing diagnostic test software, a frequency generator adapted to produce an electrical signal having a predetermined frequency when an unacceptable response is determined, wherein the predetermined frequency corresponds substantially to the event within the diagnostic test sequence of a particular test for which an unacceptable response is determined. The signal is presented at an output terminal of the circuit board. The status of the circuit board is determined by measuring the frequency of the signal at the output terminal and comparing that frequency to an index of corresponding defects.
Abstract: Refinement of motion block motion vectors to achieve a dense motion field for temporal video signal processing makes use of candidate motion vectors from a parent block and neighboring child block groups to determine the motion vector for a child block within one of the child block groups. The vicinity of each candidate motion vector may be searched to obtain a trial motion vector having a minimum displaced frame difference measure, with the trial motion vector with the minimum displaced frame difference measure from among all the trial motion vectors being the motion vector for the child block. Alternatively each candidate motion vector may be applied to the child block, and the vicinity of the candidate motion vector having the minimum displaced frame difference being searched to obtain the motion vector for the child block.
Abstract: A signal generator has a variable reference oscillator, a variable oscillator and a phase locked loop for generating an output having jitter and wander. The variable reference oscillator generates a reference having a varying phase offset over a first phase modulation frequency interval and a constant output over a second phase modulation frequency interval. The variable oscillator generates a constant output over the first phase modulation frequency interval and a variable output over the second phase modulation frequency interval. The phase locked loop includes a phase detector, a phase summing node and oscillator with the phase detector coupled to receive the outputs of the variable reference oscillator and the oscillator, and phase summing node coupled to receive the outputs of the variable oscillator and the phase detector.
Abstract: Reverse playback of MPEG video from a random access source takes advantage of the symmetry of B frames within an IB data stream. The IB data stream is processed by a parsing algorithm to identify within the B frames during playback those bits associated with motion vector identification and values to develop a parsed B frame table. When the IB data stream is output from the storage source for reverse playback, the IB data stream is rearranged into a reversed IB data stream. As each B frame is processed prior to input to an MPEG decoder, the parsed B frame table is used to manipulate the appropriate bits within the B frames to turn forward motion vectors into backward motion vectors, and vice versa. Then when the B frame is decoded by the MPEG decoder the respective motion vectors are associated with the appropriate I frames within the reversed IB data stream to produce accurate decoding of the B frames during reverse playback.
Abstract: A method is provided for displaying complex waveforms, where one of amplitude or phase is graphed versus time and the color or grayness of the curve, or the area under the curve, represents the other of amplitude or phase at the time of the first measurement.
