  • Patent number: 4064445
Abstract: A tracer mechanism having a stylus to scan the surface of a pattern or a template and to cause a congruent relative movement of a cutter and a workpiece, whereby to reproduce the contour of the pattern or template in the workpiece. The stylus is provided with an axial force element which can adjustably vary the endwise thrust of the stylus, thereby to vary the reaction force of the stylus against the workpiece. As a consequence, the stylus can be caused more accurately to track the pattern or template along a tracing plane, especially on a pattern which has a steep slope that tilts laterally relative to the tracing plane. Means is also disclosed to utilize the axial force element in a machine tool table control wherein a "box-cycle" movement is made in which the cutting tool is withdrawn from the workpiece, is stepped to a new tracing plane, and is returned in a non-cutting motion to the starting point of a subsequent cutting movement parallel to the first one.

  • Patent number: 4063627
Abstract: A pneumatic control system for a press which includes a pair of start switches. The system is constructed so that the press can only be started if both of the start switches are actuated within a predetermined time interval. If one of the start switches is released during a down stroke of the press, the press is stopped. A cam operated switch permits continued operation of the press after the press has reached its bottom position even though start switches are released after the press has passed full down position. A brake cam operated switch prevents operation of the press if the press fails to stop at its full up position.

  • Patent number: 4062388
Abstract: The barrel assembly for attachment to a standard driving tool includes a sleeve adapted for attachment to the tool, a barrel retractably mounted in the sleeve and a bushing positioned within the sleeve and extending into a barrel bore. The barrel includes aligned entry and exit trackways to accommodate a strip containing fasteners and the bushing is adapted to position the fastener within the bore of the barrel in a first position and then in a second position engage the strip so as to clamp it in place as the driver disengages the fastener therefrom. A carriage assembly can be positioned within the end of the barrel so as to form an internal restrictive bore for the fastener in a first position and an enlarged bore in a second position so as to permit the fastener to pass therethrough.

  • Patent number: 4060886
Abstract: In a method and apparatus, a continuous filament coupling element for a slide fastener is formed and an inside surface of one leg portion of a pair of leg portions at each section of the coupling element is deformed to form interlocking means such as a sharp edge, groove, tooth, or the like. An elongated member is biased against the interlocking means to interlock therewith and prevent longitudinal and transverse movement of the elongated member relative to the leg portions. The coupling element is secured to a tape to complete the stringer.

  • Patent number: 4054154
Abstract: A control system having a plurality of control channels each having its own source of system hydraeric fluid under pressure and each having a control valve and a monitor valve. A position indicating pressure signal is generated by each of the valves and is compared to detect discrepancies therebetween, and in the event of such a discrepancy, to generate a failure indicating signal. The failure indicating signal is subsequently transmitted to appropriate control apparatus which will effect proper switching to eliminate any part of the failed system from control or future possible control of the apparatus to which the system is connected.

  • Patent number: 4053094
Abstract: A fastener cartridge of the throw-away type including a housing enclosing an elongated continuous wire wound in coil formation on a spool and mounting the spool for rotation about its axis in response to an outward pull on a free end portion of the strand extending outwardly of the housing and a holding pawl within the housing for preventing movement of the strand free end portion into the housing and a cooperating portable power-operated device lockingly securing said cartridge in operative relation thereon having power driven means for cutting off successive lengths from the free end portion of the wire and driving the same into a workpiece. The dimension of the lengths cut off from the wire can be varied within a range as desired by an adjustable power-operated feed pawl which cooperates with the holding pawl of the cartridge.

  • Patent number: 4053834
Abstract: A narrowband phase modulation communication system is disclosed which eliminates thresholding. At the transmitter, quadrature modulation which produces very large maximum phase deviation is employed in conjunction with a constant amplitude limiter. The constant amplitude resultant contains the carrier and voice signal components in quadrature and is transmitted, at a suitable frequency, in this form. At the receiver, a narrowband phase locked loop is employed for demodulation. This demodulating loop coherently tracks the carrier component and eliminates the thresholding problem normally encountered. In a modification, the carrier component is used to transmit data either alone or in combination with the voice signal.

  • Patent number: 4049182
Abstract: Friction welding apparatus for substantially automatically welding relatively small diameter workpieces. The apparatus comprises a pair of spaced segmented transfer wheels on a single shaft for retaining workpieces and rotating the same between loading, welding and ejection stations, and a plurality of high-speed motors which carry workpieces at the opposite ends of each rotor, such motors being moveable from a load station through a series of speed-increasing stations to a weld station between the several transfer wheels. Hydraulic means then forces the oppositely disposed transfer wheel segments in their weld stations toward the motor therebetween to simultaneously complete two friction welds. Thereafter, the parts are ejected when the wheel segments move to the ejection stations.

  • Patent number: 4046336
Abstract: Vortex diffusion means for an aircraft having lift structure rooted therein that extends outboard to a structure tip from which a discrete tip vortex develops when said tip is propelled through the air. A sub-wing extends from the tip of the lift structure. Preferably, the sub-wing has its leading edge or upper lead surface tangent to the upper lead surface of the lift structure and a span axis parallel to the span axis of the lift structure. The sub-wing's chord is sized to equally divide the bound vorticity shed at the tip of the lift structure so that twin discrete vortices are generated. One discrete vortex forms along the streamwise edge of the lift structure's tip and the other forms along the streamwise edge of the sub-wing's tip. The distance between the two vortices is in the range of from 25 to 50% of the local chord of the lift structure.

  • Patent number: 4041493
Abstract: A VHF omnirange receiver subject to extraneous amplitude modulation of the carrier close to the frequency of a variable phase VOR modulation signal with a subcarrier frequency modulated by a fixed phase signal at the frequency of the variable phase signal is adapted for elimination of the effect of the extraneous modulation. Amplitude modulation of the subcarrier is detected and amplified with phase reversal with amplification in an amount equal to the ratio of the carrier amplitude to the subcarrier amplitude to produce a cancellation signal. The cancellation signal is added to the composite received signal to eliminate the effects of unwanted modulation at the frequency on the carrier.
