  • Patent number: 4107971
Abstract: A cluster type rolling mill having a housing characterized by exterior curvatures of the upper and the lower housing parts backing the roll cluster and being joined by four columns at the housing corners. The exterior shape of said upper and lower housing parts is comprised of two or three radii, curves or a combination thereof, so proportioning the dimensions of said parts as to minimize the sum of their non-parallel deflections and its effect upon the roll gap throughout the rolling width for one of the normal rolling conditions and to reduce the range thereof to a magnitude within the limits of adjustable compensation means. The result is the elimination of the need for deflection compensating roll contours.

  • Patent number: 4106332
Abstract: A finger tip actuated structural crack monitor operation wherein a conductive array is adhered to a structure which is susceptible to development of cracks upon fatigue. An interrogation module is mounted on the structure and is connected to the array with circuit means in the module to sense any momentary discontinuity in the array and to store a failure condition therein upon detection of such discontinuity. A readout means is manually operated to provide a human sensible indication of the existence of the failure condition.

  • Patent number: 4105562
Abstract: Filtering apparatus having a housing defining an inlet and an outlet. Disposed within the housing is a plurality of filter elements constructed in tubular form and held together as a bundle of such elements. The entire bundle of elements may be removed from or inserted into the housing as a unit. Each of the tubular filter elements has a threaded fitting at each end thereof with the threads on each of the ends being adapted for mating engagement with each other. In this manner a plurality of the filter elements may be assembled in tandem form by threaded engagement of the mating ends thereof to provide the desired filter area and size for any particular application without the necessity of custom designing filter elements for each housing or application. The mating threads are formed on dissimilar non-galling metals.

  • Patent number: 4098145
Abstract: The invention contemplates an improved mechanical traction drive providing a single control whereby a desired range of speed ratios between input and output shafts is selectively available, without requiring clutch connection to the power source, such as an internal-combustion engine. The transmission involves a combination of completely mechanical friction-roller and meshing-gear planetary systems which are connected at all times, whether the single control is operated to call for a forward drive, a stop or a reverse drive of the output shaft. For the particular disclosed form, provision is made for automatic downshifting reaction to increasing load, and major axial-reaction forces are self-contained by rotating mechanism, thus (a) avoiding substantial axial force components on main-bearings of the mechanism, and (b) reducing to very small magnitudes the requisite force for selective control actuation.

  • Patent number: 4098594
Abstract: A low velocity, low temperature, inertial particle separator is disclosed which imposes minimum resistance to the flow of gas through the apparatus. The separator includes a slowly revolving drum with radiating cups around which the gas must flow. Change of direction of the flowing gas as it flows around the cups causes the entrained particles to be collected by the cup-shape of the cups. A vacuum system is provided for inducing the collected particles to migrate to a central axially disposed collection system which draws the particles away by suction.

  • Patent number: 4096688
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to expansible linkages for expansible wrist watch bracelets, identification bracelets and similar articles which permit the retail jeweler to quickly and easily adjust the length of a bracelet to fit different size wrists of customers. The bracelet includes two sections of expansible linkages of each of which has a row of top links, a row of bottom links, means interconnecting the links of each row with the links of the other row to provide longitudinal displacement of the links relative to each other from contracted to expanded positions and vice versa. A channel shaped outer member has a series of aligned perforations extending through its side walls. First spring pin means connected to one end of one of the expansible sections has the outer ends of its trunions extending into a first selected pair of the aligned perforations.

  • Patent number: 4096225
Abstract: Method of molding plurality of spaced fastener elements onto parallel filaments. A pair of leg portions of each fastening element have, respectively, a projection and an opening, the projection and opening mating to interlock the leg portions. The fastening elements are formed by directing the parallel filaments to a cavity wheel which has mold cavities enclosed by a band, and then injecting plastic material through gate openings in the band into the mold cavities to form a train of fastener elements on the parallel filaments.

  • Patent number: 4095763
Abstract: A fail safe aircraft control system wherein duplicate control loops are employed to produce identical control signals for the system actuator. Output signals from the two loops are compared to detect when the outputs differ by a preset limit as an indication of a component failure. When such a failure is detected the system actuator is deactivated thus preventing the failed augmentation system from affecting control of the aircraft.
