    Abstract: A method for processing non-lignocellulosic waste comprises pre-treating the non-lignocellulosic waste by enzymatic hydrolysis to yield a pre-treated non-lignocellulosic waste subjecting the pre-treated non-lignocellulosic waste to microwave hydrothermal carbonization to yield at least one of a hydrochar and a biocrude liquor. A system for processing non-lignocellulosic waste includes an enzymatic hydrolysis station for receiving non-lignocellulosic waste and generating a treated non-lignocellulosic waste, and a microwave hydrothermal carbonization station downstream of the enzymatic hydrolysis station for receiving the treated non-lignocellulosic waste from the enzymatic hydrolysis station and generating at least one of a hydrochar and a biocrude liquor.

    Abstract: Rapid and specific detection of biological cells and biomolecules is important to biological assays across diverse fields including genomics, proteomics, diagnoses, and pathological studies. Microarrays and microfluidics increasingly dominate such detection techniques due to the ability to perform significant numbers of tests with limited sample volumes. A snap chip assembly is provided for the transfer of a microarray of reagents within semi-spherical liquid droplets on a transfer chip to a target assay microarray on an assay chip following assembly of the two chips and physical contact of the droplets with the target array. Reagents in nanoliter quantities are spotted on both chips and selectively transferred as liquid droplets between transfer chip and assay chip within the contact areas. Using the snap chip structure the inventors performed immunoassays with colocalization of capture and detection antibodies with 10 targets and bead-in-gel droplet microarrays with 9 targets in the low pg/ml regime.

    Abstract: CMOS compatible SOI photonic integrated circuits (PICs) offer a low cost and promising solution to future short reach optical links operating beyond 100 Gb/s. A key building block in these optical links is the external optical modulator. Amongst, the PIC geometries for external modulators are those based upon ring resonators and Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) where while the latter have been reported with increased thermal stability and fabrication tolerances, the former have demonstrated lower loss and lower driving voltages leading to a more energy efficient approach. Multi-segmented electrode structure based PAM optical modulator can potentially replace the analog digital-to-analog circuits (DACs) which are commonly used to achieve the multilevel electrical driving signal. Accordingly, it would be beneficial to combine the benefits of ring resonators to provide PAM-N modulators.

Hence, maximally utilizing available bandwidth is crucial, for example in wireless networks, to supporting ever increasing numbers of users and their demands for increased data volumes, low latency, and high download speeds. Accordingly, it would be beneficial for such networks to support variable bandwidth allocations such that smaller frequency sub-bands are allocated to users, as their number increases, but the individual users/nodes insert more data-carrying signals in order to compensate for the loss of operating bandwidth arising from the accommodation of more users. It would further be beneficial for transmitters and receivers according to embodiments of such a network architecture to be based upon low cost design methodologies allowing their deployment within a wide range of applications including high volume, low cost consumer electronics for example.

    Abstract: Micromachined gyroscopes, such as those based upon microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have the potential to dominate the rate-sensor market mainly due to their small size, low power and low cost. As MEMS gyroscopes are resonant devices requiring active excitation it would be beneficial to improve the resonator Q-factor reducing the electrical drive power requirements for the excitation circuitry. Further, many prior art MEMS gyroscope designs have multiple resonances arising from design and manufacturing considerations which require additional frequency tuning and control circuitry together with the excitation/sense circuitry. It would therefore be beneficial to enhance the bandwidth of the resonators to remove the requirement for such circuitry. Further, to address the relatively large dimensions of MEMS gyroscopes it would be beneficial for the MEMS gyroscopes to be fabricated directly above the CMOS electronics thereby reducing the die dimensions and lowering per die cost.

    Abstract: Cryogenic electronics based upon semiconductive devices, superconductive devices, or a combination of the two present opportunities for a wide variety of novel, fast, and low power devices. However, such cryogenic electronics require cooling which is typically achieved through fluid refrigerants such as liquid nitrogen or liquid helium. Solid state refrigeration based upon adiabatic demagnetization in paramagnetic salts offers one alternative but requires that the solid state cooler and cryogenic electronic circuits be different physical elements. The inventors present solid state cooling for semiconductor materials including but not limited to silicon. Beneficially active electronic devices can be integrated monolithically with solid state semiconductor coolers exhibiting magnetic cooling within the whole substrate or predetermined regions of the substrate. Alternatively, active devices may be formed with semiconductor layers integral to them that exhibit magnetic cooling.
