Abstract: In one aspect, phosphine compounds comprising three adamantyl moieties (PAd3) and associated synthetic routes are described herein. Each adamantyl moiety may be the same or different. For example, each adamantyl moiety (Ad) attached to the phosphorus atom can be independently selected from the group consisting of adamantane, diamantane, triamantane and derivatives thereof. Transition metal complexes comprising PAd3 ligands are also provided for catalytic synthesis including catalytic cross-coupling reactions.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for coating and patterning hydrogels in order to modify surface properties. The method exploits the water content of the hydrogel and the hydrophobicity of the reaction solvent to create a thin oxide adhesion layer on the hydrogel surface. This oxide adhesion layer enables rapid transformation of the hydrophilic, cell non-adhesive hydrogel into either a highly hydrophobic or a cell-adhesive hydrogel by reaction with an alkylphosphonic acid or an ?,?-diphosphonoalkane, respectively. Also disclosed are coated, patterned hydrogels and constructs comprising the coated, patterned hydrogels.

Abstract: Biomineralization—the synthesis of inorganic materials using proteins—has recently gained interest as a low cost, green route for the production of metal chalcogenide semiconductor nanocrystals. Typical biomineralization approaches rely on proteins or biomolecules identified from organisms which possess a native biomineralization response. Disclosed herein is an alternative biomineralization approach for synthesizing metal chalcogenide nanocrystals which uses an artificially designed de novo protein. De novo proteins are non-natural proteins, allowing for facile modification of the protein through the tuning of amino acids within the sequence. This de novo protein was employed to produce size-controlled populations of semiconductor nanocrystals, with properties consistent with those produced using traditional routes.

Abstract: A synthetic peptide may be provided for use in dissolving tau inclusions. The peptide may include a first sequence consisting of M serine residues, where M is at least 30, and may be, e.g., 36-48. The synthetic peptide may include a second sequence fused to the C— or N-terminus of the first sequence. The second sequence may include 4-7 amino acids, the 4-7 amino acids including a kinase docking site. The kinase docking site may be configured such that the kinase phosphorylates an adjacent serine residue and starts a cascade such that all serine residues in the first sequence become phosphorylated. In some embodiments, the 4-7 amino acids may include a glutamic acid residue and/or an aspartic acid residue. In some embodiments, the glutamic acid residue and/or an aspartic acid residue is adjacent to a serine residue. Introduction of these peptides to cells allows for the dissolution of tau aggregates.

Abstract: Disclosed is a class of organic salts and electrolytes, generally for use with electrochemical devices. Some of these salts enable the transport of magnesium ions without the presence of any additives, such as halide ions. Precursors are generated using simple fluorinated alcohols as well as abundant reagents. These precursors, often dissolved in ethereal solvents, may be combined with an appropriate Lewis acid to result in solutions that are able to conduct ions and allow for reversible electrodeposition.

Abstract: A fabric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) device, a textile material comprising interconnected insulated conductive fibers can be used to generate a cold homogenous plasma by forming a discharge path from a conductive core of a first fiber, to a dielectric layer surrounding the conductive core, through an air gap towards, e.g., a second fiber or human skin. When the plasma that lights in and around the air gap comes into contact with a contaminated surface (containing, e.g., bacteria and/or viruses), it induces reactive species to form on the contaminated surface, and the reactive species are then allowed to kill the bacteria and/or viruses.
Abstract: Methods and devices for additive production of multi-materials are provided. Various devices may include a plurality of toolheads, each toolhead operably coupled to a different composition and having a kinematic coupling mechanism. The compositions may include a first composition comprising a cement paste or mortar, and a second composition comprising a thermoplastic polymer and/or an elastomeric polymer. The devices may include a moveable tool mount configured to be removably coupled to the kinematic coupling mechanism of each toolhead. A processor may be included that is configured to cause the deposition of the first composition and cause the deposition of the second composition simultaneous with the first composition and/or deposit the second composition after the first composition is deposited. Systems and techniques for toolpath creation may also be provided. In-situ structures may be provided that may include cement paste in contact with a thermoplastic polymer or an elastomeric polymer.
Abstract: Provided herein are programmable condensate protein systems and nucleic acid constructs encoding the same. The protein system enables modular targeting of proteins of interest. Protein-peptide interaction domains (PPIDs) are incorporated to functionalize engineered condensates with the attributes of the recruited protein, resulting in a modular system that allows for diverse facile and reprogrammable applications, including in enzyme clustering of metabolic pathways. Colocalizing specific metabolic enzymes in these condensates results in functionalized organelles with which can be used to manipulate the output of engineered metabolic pathways for the production of a pharmaceutical precursor.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described, and one method includes illuminating a target-of-interest (TI) with an RF energy configured to effect, over a time duration extending from a first time to a second time, an increase in a temperature of the TI. At a first detection time within the time duration, a first temperature NQR signal spectrum of the TI is detected, and a corresponding first temperature NQR spectrum data set is generates. At a second detection time, subsequent to the first detection time, a second temperature NQR signal spectrum of the TI is detected and corresponding second temperature NQR spectrum data set is output. Based at least in part on the first temperature NQR spectral dataset and the second temperature NQR spectral dataset, the TI is classified between including the SI and not including the SI.
