Abstract: A surgical instrument, and methods for its use, is described that includes clamp heads that can be nestled within or extended from a tubular sheath by longitudinal movement of the clamp heads' tines with respect to the tubular sheath. One of the tines includes an arch that slides against a mouth and inside wall of the tubular sheath, causing the clamp heads to open or close. The clamp heads close lightly, to within a predetermined (or zero) distance from one another, gently grasp an ultrathin polymer substrate seeded with cells, and pulls it within the sheath such that the substrate curls and folds to protect the cells.
Abstract: A method for continuous acoustic signature recognition and classification includes a step of obtaining an audio input signal from a resonant microphone array positioned proximate to a target, the audio input signal having a plurality of channels. The target produces characterizing audio signals depending on a state or condition of the target. A plurality of features is extracted from the audio input signal with a signal processor. The plurality of features is classified to determine the state of the target. An acoustic monitoring system implementing the method is also provided.
Abstract: A method for treating autoimmune and/or inflammatory diseases includes a step of identifying a subject having a gastrointestinal autoimmune/inflammatory disease. A fasting mimicking diet (FMD) is administered to the subject for a first time period.
Abstract: A method for determining a change of temperature of an object. The method may include heating an object and measuring scattering parameters (S-parameters) of scattered microwave electric fields from the object. A distorted Born iterative method may be used to determine a change of a dielectric property of the object based on the measured S-parameters. A change of temperature of the object may be determined based on the change of the dielectric property of the object.

Abstract: Described herein are methods and compositions for genomic editing. Endonucleases for genomic editing involve inducing breaks in double stranded DNA, for which knock-ins are notoriously inefficient for relying on random integration of homologous DNA sequences into the break site by repair proteins. To address these issues, described herein are novel recombinant fusion proteins that actively recruit linear DNA inserts in closer proximity to the genomic cleavage site, increasing integration efficiency of large DNA fragments into the genome. Such improvements to genomic editing technology allow one to use lower linear DNA concentrations without sacrificing efficiency and can be further combined with other features, such as fluorescent protein reporting systems.

The positive electrode electrolyte includes water and a first redox couple. The first redox couple includes a first organic compound which includes a first moiety in conjugation with a second moiety. The first organic compound is reduced during discharge while during charging the reduction product of the first organic compound is oxidized to the first organic compound. The negative electrode electrolyte includes water and a second redox couple. The second couple includes a second organic compound including a first moiety in conjugation with a second moiety. The reduction product of the second organic compound is oxidized to the second organic compound during discharge.

Abstract: A microfluidic flow restrictor that uses micron-sized beads to impede flow is described. The flow rate can be adjusted by adding or removing the beads using injection needles through self-sealing ports, one injection needle injecting or aspirating beads and another injection needle pushing or pulling fluid from outside of a bead trap within the flow restrictor. In alternative embodiments, the beads or other filler material can be trapped in a manifold bead trap such that they block a subset of fluid channels of the flow restrictor, allowing fluid to flow freely through the rest of the fluid channels. The flow restrictor can be integrated with a contact lens or implantable medical device for use in dispensing liquid therapeutic agents at flow rates of microliters per minute or moving body fluids at a controlled rate from one part of the body to another.
