Abstract: 2,5-Bis(benzoxazol-2?-yl)benzene-1,4-diol derivatives (Zinhbo derivatives) are used to detect zinc ions and have particular application in vivo and in vitro. Zinhbo derivatives upon excitation give a florescence response emission that can be used to determine the presence of zinc cation in solution. Zinhbo derivatives complexed with zinc cations upon excitation can produce a florescence response emission in the visible and near infrared range. Zinhbo derivatives complexed with zinc cations exhibit a large stoke shift between the excitation and emission wavelengths.
Abstract: Methods and compositions for identification of candidate antigen-specific variable regions as well as generation of antibodies or antigen-binding fragments that could have desired antigen specificity are provided. For example, in certain aspects methods for determining amino acid sequences of serum antibody CDR and abundancy level are described. In some aspects, methods for determining nucleic acid sequences of antibody variable region sequences and frequency are provided. Furthermore, the invention provides methods for identification and generation of antibody or antigen-binding fragments that comprise highly-represented CDR.

Abstract: Cloned, i.e. defined, defective interfering (DI) influenza A virus is produced in embryonated hens eggs using a method which generates large quantities of DI virus material. Co-administration of cloned DI influenza A virus with a lethal dose of virulent influenza A virus conferred protection in mice compared to a control of inactivated cloned DI influenza A virus. Control mice which received only cloned DI influenza A virus and no lethal challenge of virulent influenza A virus were not protected three weeks later on lethal challenge with infective virus. Cloned DI influenza A virus of one subtype is found to act in vivo as an effective antiviral against the same or any other sub-type of influenza A virus. The antiviral effect has been found to have both a therapeutic and a prophylactic application against influenza A infection in humans, mammals and birds.
Abstract: Substantial reduction of the radiation dose in computed tomography (CT) imaging is shown using a machine-learning dose-reduction technique. Techniques are provided that (1) enhance low-radiation dosage images, beyond just reducing noise, and (2) may be combined with other approaches, such as adaptive exposure techniques and iterative reconstruction, for radiation dose reduction.
Abstract: A level conversion circuit has a keeper circuit for retaining an intermediate output node at a high output level to avoid it floating due to leakage through a pullup transistor in a shifting circuit. Thin oxide and thick oxide versions of the level conversion circuit can be provided. The level conversion circuit enables higher performance, reduced power consumption and reduced susceptibility to process variation compared to previous level conversion designs.

Abstract: Methods and compositions for modulating cell differentiation, proliferation and morphology in vitro or in vivo are described. The methods include modifying the extracellular nanoenvironment of stem cells with a self-assembling peptide nanofiber scaffold. The extracellular nanoenvironment can be modified by changing the percentage of self-assembling peptides used to form the nanofiber scaffold, the concentration of cells in the nanofiber scaffold, the pH, or the amounts of serum. Modulating the extracellular nanoenvironment of cells in nanofiber scaffold allows for increased targeting of cell placement and therapeutic delivery, amplified by cell encapsulation and implantation.

Abstract: A semiconductor device comprises three semiconductor layers. The semiconductor layers are arranged to form a 2DHG and a 2DEG separated by a polarization layer. The device comprises a plurality of electrodes: first and second electrodes electrically connected to the 2DHG so that current can flow between them via the 2DHG and a third electrode electrically connected to the 2DEG so that when a positive voltage is applied to the third electrode, with respect to at least one of the other electrodes, the 2DEG and the 2DHG will be at least partially depleted.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for image processing suitable for use in wireless capsule endoscopy are provided. The image processing techniques exploit characteristic features of endoscopic images to enable low complexity compression. A color space conversion, coupled with lossless predictive coding and variable length coding are employed. Sub-sampling and clipping may also be used. The described image processing can be used both with both white-band imaging and narrow-band-imaging.
Abstract: A method for producing a silver colloid solution of highly stable resulting colloids includes adding an aqueous solution of a hydroxylamine salt to an aqueous solution of an alkali, and then dispersing into the mixture an aqueous solution of the metal ions, the hydroxylamine salt being selected such that the anion, when combined with the said metal ions, would form a metal salt having a very low solubility in water, wherein the metal ion solution is introduced into the mixture in such a manner that the metal ions are substantially dispersed throughout the mixture within one second. A maturing period, preferably at elevated temperatures, leads to a stable state.
