  • Patent number: 8709237
Abstract: A process for treating bitumen froth with paraffinic solvent is provided which uses three stages of separation. Froth and a first solvent are directed to a first stage at a solvent/bitumen ratio for precipitating few or substantially no asphaltenes. A first stage underflow is directed to a second stage and a first stage overflow is directed to a third stage. A second stage underflow is directed to waste tailings and the second stage overflow joins the first stage overflow. A third stage underflow is recovered as an asphaltene by-product and a third stage overflow is recovered as a diluted bitumen product. At least a second solvent is added to one or both of the second or third stages for controlling a fraction of asphaltenes in the third stage underflow. Asphaltene loss to waste tailings is minimized and asphaltenes are now recovered as asphaltene by-product.

  • Patent number: 8711687
Abstract: A system and method for providing backup communications over an Ethernet cable are disclosed. A backup communication system (BCS) is provided as part of a networked (TCP/IP) hospital communication system. The BCS is coupled to an Ethernet cable used for normal TCP/IP communications. When TCP/IP communications are interrupted, the BCS receives patient call signals from patient room terminals over a secondary communication mode of the Ethernet cable, and transmits those call signals to a nurses' station. The call signals are transmitted as voltage coded data such as voltage pulses or static levels. The voltage can include call information. 10V can represent a normal patient call, 15V can represent a patient emergency call, and 24V can represent a code call. Information can be relayed back to the room terminals using the same signaling technique. Thus, basic communications can be achieved when TCP/IP communications are unavailable. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

  • Publication number: 20140114105
Abstract: A process can include making a bio-diesel, a bio-naphtha, and optionally bio-propane from a complex mixture of natural occurring fats & oils. The complex mixture can be subjected to a refining treatment for removing a major part of non-triglyceride and non-fatty acid components to obtain refined oils. The refined oils can be subjected to a fractionation step to obtain a substantially unsaturated liquid triglyceride part (phase L), and a substantially saturated solid triglyceride part (phase S). The phase L can transformed into alkyl-esters as bio-diesel by a transesterification. The phase S can be transformed into substantially linear paraffin's as the bio-naphtha by an hydrodeoxygenation. Fatty acids can be obtained from the phase S and transformed into substantially linear paraffin's as the bio-naphtha by hydrodeoxygenation or decarboxylation. Fatty acids soaps can be obtained from the phase S that are transformed into substantially linear paraffin's as the bio-naphtha by decarboxylation.

  • Publication number: 20140105381
Abstract: The method for generic-point parallel elliptic curve scalar multiplication replaces the pre-computation overhead of conventional elliptic curve scalar multiplication by post-computations that can be parallelized. This greatly increases the speed and efficiency of scalar multiplication performed in elliptic curve cryptography. According to the method, when scalar multiplication is required, the scalar integer is partitioned into a plurality of partitions, and calculations in each partition are performed simultaneously or in parallel on separate processors using conventional binary protocols. The bit size of each partition is adjusted to balance the load between the processors, i.e., so that each processor performs substantially the same number of point operations. The resulting calculations from each partition are accumulated or summed to produce the point that is the product of the scalar multiplication.
