A latex composition comprising 100 parts of a rubbery polymer selected from the group consisting of polybutadiene and copolymers of butadiene with up to 50% by weight of styrene, 30-60 parts of formamide, and 5-30 parts of N-(ethylene oxide substituted) amide of oleic acid containing about 10 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of amide, the said parts being by weight.

Abstract: N-Alicyclic carbamates, useful in making polyurethanes, are prepared by nuclear hydrogenation of an N-aryl carbamate using a group VIII transition metal catalyst. E.g., dimethyl 4,4'-methylenedicarbanilate is contacted with hydrogen and ruthenium catalyst in 2-propanol medium, at 50.degree. C. for 1.3 hours under a pressure of 500-800 psi, to form dimethyl 4,4'-methylenedicyclohexylcarbamate. Acid activation of catalyst is a feature of the invention.

Abstract: Polyoxymethylene diphosphonates having the formula ##STR1## wherein the R groups are the same or different and are selected from alkyl, haloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, or (R.sup.1 and R.sup.2) or (R.sup.3 and R.sup.4) are joined together to form a ring structure are disclosed. These compounds are useful as flame retardants for organic resins in general, and especially for foamed polyurethane resins.

Abstract: A pneumatic tire of the tubeless type, embodying a layer of puncture sealant composition based on:A. a major proportion of a low molecular weight elastomer (e.g., depolymerized natural rubber) in admixture with a tackifying or plasticizing substance (e.g., a resinous reaction product of a mineral oil purification residue with formaldehyde) andB. a minor proportion of a high molecular weight elastomer (e.g., cis-polyisoprene);Containing a crosslinking agent (e.g., tetra-n-butyl titanate) in an amount sufficient to give a partial cure.

Abstract: Elastomeric butadiene-piperylene copolymers in which the butadiene is mainly in high cis-1,4-addition, low vinyl configuration, prepared in solution using iodine-containing catalyst based on organomagnesium compound and titanium tetrahalide. Graft copolymers of resin-forming monomers (e.g., styrene, acrylonitrile) on the butadiene-piperylene elastomer have good low temperature impact strength.

Abstract: Latex compositions with improved water resistance, chemical stability and rheological properties, useful either as the sole binder or as the co-binding agent with pigmentary material in paper coating compositions, made by aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomeric mixture of, by weight,A. 35 to 75 parts of a monovinylidene aromatic monomer (e.g., styrene),B. correspondingly 65 to 25 parts of an aliphatic conjugated diene, said monomers (A) plus (B) constituting from 75 to 99.5% of the total monomeric mixture,C. 0.5 to 10% of an acryloyloxycarboxylic acid type monomer (e.g., beta-carboxyethylacrylate), and, optionally,D. 0 to 15% of one or more different hydrophilic monomers (e.g., mono-beta-hydroxyethylmaleate).

Abstract: Polymer latex (e.g., butadiene-styrene-itaconic acid copolymer latex) resulting from aqueous emulsion polymerization in the presence of conventional anionic emulsifying agent (e.g., dodecyl benzene sulfonate) has increased particle size and improved stability if a lignosulfonate salt (e.g., sodium lignosulfonate) is further employed as an emulsion modifier in the emulsion polymerization process. The resulting latex is useful for carpet scrim application.

Abstract: A fire retardant system comprising a compound having within its structure the 1,2,3,4,9,9-hexahalo-1,4-dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene-5,8-dione or 1,2,3,4,9,9-hexahalo-1,4-dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene-5,8-dioxy nucleus or a compound which is capable of being converted to the 1,2,3,4,9,9-hexahalo-1,4-dihydro-1,4-methanonaphthalene-5,8-dione nucleus and requires no metal oxide addition to exert its function.

Abstract: An air deflector, which is adapted to be mounted on the roof of a cab of a tractor pulling a trailer and has a frontwardly facing totally curved air deflecting surface that is symmetrical about a vertical center plane and is forwardly convex in all horizontal and vertical cross-sectional planes, is disclosed. To define the deflecting surface, the deflector has a central portion and a pair of symmetrical rearwardly turned wing portions at the opposite sides of the central portion and includes a top edge of substantially circular curvature and a base edge of substantially elliptical curvature.

Abstract: Phosphate esters having the formula Ro[-(A)M(B)NH] wherein A has the structural formula ##STR1## and B has the structural formula ##STR2## wherein the R groups are alkyl radicals, m and n are each integers from 0 to 4 and the sum of m + n is from 1 to about 4, are useful as flame retardants, especially for rigid polyurethane foams.

Abstract: A broad class of furan-3-Carboxamide derivatives, including many novel compounds, can be made reliably and in good yields by a novel one step reaction between an .alpha.-hydroxyketone and an acetamide in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts agent in an inert solvent. The broad class of derivatives has fungicidal and insecticidal utility.

Abstract: The single-stage building of 0.degree. belted pneumatic tires completely in flat band form on standard building drums, is disclosed. The feasibility of the process rests on the provision of the substantially inextensible metallic or non-metallic belt cords in the form of longitudinally extensible high "soft stretch" tapes. In a preferred version of the invention, the tape is composed of a plurality of cords each having formed therein a multiplicity of undulations which in any given straight length of the tape are substantially planar, the cords being disposed in side by side relation so that the planes of the undulations of each cord are generally parallel to the planes of the undulations of each adjacent cord, and the cords together with a relatively weak and frangible but only minimally undulated stabilizing yarn for the tape being secured to each other and held in their undulating state by a relative weak, chain stitch knitted, frangible stitching yarn or thread.

Abstract: Flexible automobile exterior body parts are molded from a polyurethane elastomer prepared from a reaction mixture comprising:A. a poly(oxypropylene)-poly(oxyethylene) glycol of molecular weight of from about 1500 to about 4000 containing 15 to 50% by weight oxyethylene groups;B. a "graft" polyol of molecular weight from about 2500 to about 4500, prepared by the in situ polymerization of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers in a poly(oxypropylene) and/or poly(oxypropylene)-poly(oxyethylene) glycol containing less than 15% by weight oxyethylene groups;C. methylenebis(4-phenylisocyanate);D. 1,4-butanediol.The invention also relates to this polyurethane elastomer.

Abstract: A building drum for building first-stage, steel-reinforced, radial monoply, pneumatic tire carcasses, is disclosed. The drum comprises a circumferential array of drum-forming segments which are supported for radial displacement to and from contracted and expanded dispositions, and apparatus for displacing the segments radially between the contracted and expanded dispositions. Each of the segments has the same axial extent and terminates at each end in a respective flange projecting radially inwardly. Each of the flanges has a respective recess exposed radially outwardly, corresponding ones of the recesses which are at the same segment end defining co-operatively with one another at each such segment end a radially outwardly exposed annular bead-seat. The segments, when in a fully contracted disposition, present a substantially cylindrical outer carcass-ply support-surface having a diameter which is less than the inner diameter of any annular metallic bead-core to be thereby operated upon.
