  • Patent number: 4120193
Abstract: Leak-detecting apparatus for a tire-vulcanizing press which is extremely sensitive and is capable of monitoring minute leaks in a diaphragm or bag in the region of the bottom of the bag susceptible to cracking and removed from the vicinity of the leak-detecting apparatus which ordinarily is at a top plate of the press. The apparatus includes temperature-sensitive resistive means in a normally balanced bridge circuit which is unbalanced by leakage fluid from the diaphragm for indicating a malfunction of the press and also includes a check valve for preventing air from outside the press from entering the vicinity of the temperature-sensitive resistive means.

  • Patent number: 4115172
Abstract: An uninflated unmounted tire is supported in a frame of the apparatus for engagement with a sealant applicator head that contacts the interior tire liner after a bead spreading device on the frame spreads apart the tire beads, and an elevator member on the frame raises the tire. The applicator head has a tire engaging profile corresponding to that of the tire and an elongated opening for which highly viscous, sticky sealant is discharged onto the tire liner under the tread in a layer of predetermined cross section as the tire is rotated on the frame past the applicator head. A complete coating of sealant is applied during one revolution of the tire, with the sealant having a butt joint, or an overlapping splice formed when the elevator member is lowered a predetermined amount by a drop-off mechanism as the tire completes one revolution of sealant application.

  • Patent number: 4107234
Abstract: Disclosed is a novel polybutadiene or butadiene-styrene copolymer based gum plastic having excellent impact strength and weather aging resistance and a method for its preparation. The ABS composition of the invention is a matrix of a polymer of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer and a graft copolymer comprising a graftable rubber substrate which is formed from a mixture of a pre-crosslinked polybutadiene or SBR spine latex, and a low-gel elastomer which has been at least partially cross-linked during the preparation of the product. Within certain ratios of cross-linked spine to low-gel spine, significant improvements in impact strength and weather aging resistance are achieved. In the method of preparation, the latex, monomers and low-gel elastomer, are converted directly to the final product by a conventional suspension polymerization process.

  • Patent number: 4100182
Abstract: An adjuvant for an elastomeric composition is made by mixing methacrylic acid with a suspension of zinc oxide in a liquid medium (such as water or alcohol) in the proportions required to form basic zinc methacrylate. Removal of the liquid from the reaction product and blending of the finely divided reaction product with an elastomer such as cis-polybutadiene yields a compositon which, when cured (for example with an organic peroxide), is hard yet resilient. Molding of the composition in the form of a golf ball produces a durable solid golf ball which has in large measure the play characteristics of a wound golf ball, and substantially retains such characteristics after extended play.
