  • Patent number: 4042647
Abstract: Disclosed is a novel polybutadiene or butadiene-styrene copolymer based gum plastic having excellent impact strength and a method for its preparation. The use of small particle size (SPS) spine latex in a latex-suspension process gives unexpectedly good properties by yielding an ABS with at least about 85% of the rubber present as particles within a specified and relatively narrow size range, i.e., 0.04-0.25.mu. and having a number average particle size less than 0.14.mu.. In the method of preparation, the latex spine and monomers are converted directly to the final product by a conventional suspension process.

  • Patent number: 4035175
Abstract: Plant growth regulant effects, such as dwarfing, cessation of terminal growth, increased flower set, increased fruit and pod set, fruiting body abortion, twisting and epinastic responses, etc., may be accomplished on crops such as soybeans, cotton, etc., by application of certain 2-(1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl) or 2-(2-oxazolyl) or 2-(1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)benzoic acids, salts and esters, having the formula ##STR1## where X is nitrogen or C--R" (R" being hydrogen or methyl), Z is oxygen or sulfur when X is nitrogen, Z is oxygen and when X is C--R", R is phenyl or various substituents, and R' is hydrogen or various substituents. An example is 2-(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)benzoic acid. The compounds where X is nitrogen and Z is sulfur are new compounds, e.g., 2-(5-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)benzoic acid.

  • Patent number: 4034544
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing either bulked continuous filament or spun staple yarn in one continuous operation are disclosed. In the method, a first single end of either continuous filament or spun staple yarn is ballooned about and plied with a like second single end of yarn while both are under tension and advancing at a common linear speed. A higher tension is utilized during the plying operation. The plied yarn is then subjected to heat while the tension is relaxed, followed by a cooling and drying stage, to enable the yarn to be twist-set in a bulked condition, with the component single ends substantially free of any twist memory. This abstract is not to be taken either as a complete exposition or as a limitation of the present invention, however, the full nature and extent of the invention being discernible only by reference to and from the entire disclosure.
