  • Patent number: 4263953
Abstract: A pneumatic insert for a pneumatic tire comprises a generally toroidal-shaped hollow tubular member with beads, that includes an insert inflation chamber pneumatically noncommunicable with the tire inflation chamber. A crown portion of the insert has a radially inner and a radially outer layer that define a closed lubricant chamber, also noncommunicable with the tire inflation chamber under normal running conditions. Lubricant release means such as valve or diaphragm provided in the outer crown layer permit release of the lubricant when the tread collapses against the insert crown during run-flat conditions.

  • Patent number: 4262724
Abstract: A pneumatic run-flat insert for a pneumatic tire is provided with circumferential sections having different radii. During vehicle operation in a run-flat condition the different insert radii cause a vibratory disturbance at a wheel axle that alerts the driver of the existence of a run-flat condition or an abnormally low-pressure condition in the tire. During normal driving conditions there is clearance between the insert and the tire liner and no warning vibrations will occur in the wheel axle.In various embodiments of the invention the different insert radii correspond to two or more ply sections in an insert ply having different cord angles. A relatively high cord angle ply section will furnish a relatively larger radius than the ply section with a relatively low cord angle.

  • Patent number: 4259403
Abstract: An acid of the formula A--COOH).sub.x, or an anhydride thereof, wherein x is an integer of 1 or 2, wherein the acid groups are vicinal if x is 2, and A is phenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkylene, C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkenylene, C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 bridged or nonbridged cycloalkylene or cylcoalkenylene, with the proviso that A is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl if x is 1, renders ethylene-propylene-nonconjugated diene elastomers more adherent to fibers that have been treated with a resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex dip when said elastomers are cured directly onto said fibers.

  • Patent number: 4258771
Abstract: A tire and rim assembly with a plurality of dispensing means adapted to release material into the inflation cavity upon operation of the assembly with the tire in the deflated condition to, for example, minimize damage to the tire cause by operation after deflation. The dispensing means are mounted in a balanced array so that each dispensing means lies at least partially in the well of the drop-center rim, and the dispensing means define a clear arc in the well which is adapted to receive portions of the beads during mounting of the tire to the rim. The clear arc of the well may also receive the beads of the tire during demounting of the tire from the rim assembly. Thus, the tire may be mounted to or demounted from the rim assembly by a method which incorporates the ordinary "buttonhooking" procedure commonly utilized with drop-center rims.

  • Patent number: 4254810
Abstract: A pneumatic tire having a "run-flat" capability, is disclosed. The tire is in the form of a substantially toroidally shaped carcass having a pair of bead-reinforced sidewall regions and a crown region annularly bridging the sidewall regions. Internally of the carcass, there is provided an expandable nail-deflector for deflecting a nail that punctures, for example, the crown region. The nail deflector has a releasably constrained normal condition when the crown region is puncture-free that is annularly spaced from the interior of the crown region, and is circumferentially self-expandable into engagement with the interior of the crown region upon puncture of the latter by a nail to deflect such nail harmlessly away from its path of entry.

  • Patent number: 4239862
Abstract: Long chain aliphatic alcohol (C.sub.16 +) is added to thermoplastic elastomer based on blend of olefin copolymer rubber (EPM or EPDM) and polyolefin resin (especially polypropylene). The blend may be uncured or dynamically partially cured. • Patent number: 4233838
Abstract: A control for controlling load on a tire undergoing testing while rotating in a loaded condition against a test road wheel. As the tire temperature increases during the warm up period of the tire and inflation pressure and load consequently also increase, the control will automatically decrease the load applied to the tire to maintain a preset load on the tire. During equilibrium temperature and pressure conditions of the tire, the control will effectuate decreases in load only and will not permit the tire load applicator to oscillate the load about the reset load point. The load applicator is maintained in an inactive condition by the control means except when a load decrease is necessary. During equilibrium temperature and load conditions on the tire, a relatively fast increase in temperature and a correspondingly fast load increase indicating incipient failure of the tire can be detected by the control.

  • Patent number: 4233852
Abstract: A pulley configuration which increases the contact area between the pulley tooth tips and the land area of the belt teeth. The increased contact area reduces land area wear between belt teeth. The pulley tooth tip has a longitudinal cross-sectional contour partially composed of two substantially circular arcs connected by a line segment which is substantially straight or slightly curved. The length of the line segment is from 2 percent to 100 percent of the width of the belt tooth on which the pulley is used, and preferably less than about 7 percent of the width of the belt tooth. The pulley groove depth may be less than the height of the belt tooth and the groove has a longitudinal cross-sectional contour partially composed of two substantially circular arcs connected by a line segment which is substantially straight or slightly curved. The pulley in combination with a toothed belt forms a positive power transmission system.

  • Patent number: RE30549
Abstract: A belted pneumatic tire is disclosed in which an annular protuberance projects axially from the buttress region on each side of the tire. The protuberances are positioned radially inward of the tire tread and the lateral edges of the belt or breaker extend into the protuberances such that the breaker edges are removed from the vicinity of the tread-ground contact patch to thereby improve uniformity and edge separation problems. A relatively wide breaker having a low cross-sectional curvature is also utilized to thereby provide firm support to the tread and consequent improved performance characteristics.
