Patent number: 5116599Abstract: Accordingly, the present invention is directed to biological compounds derivatized so as to contain at least one perfluoro-t-butyl moiety for use in fluorine-19 NMR and/or MRI studies. The perfluoro-t-butyl (PFTB) moiety, ##STR1## is an excellent reporter group for fluorine-19 NMR/MRI. It is a source of nine magnetically equivalent fluorine nuclei which generate a single intense resonance for easy detection in spectroscopy or imaging. This signal is a sharp singlet, not split by neighboring nuclei or spread over a wide frequency range and eliminates any chance of ghost images which might arise from multiple resonances. These spectral properties ensure a maximum signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) for readily detecting this moiety. The foregoing allows either reduction in the concentration of the derivatized compound, ability to use MRI instruments with lower field strengths, a reduction in imaging times, or a combination of the foregoing as a result of this moiety producing a single, sharp, intense resonance.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1989Date of Patent: May 26, 1992Assignees: Johns Hopkins Univ., Towson State Univ.Inventors: Walter J. Patent number: 5077087Abstract: Methods and apparatus are shown for cladding grown single crystal optical fibers. Neodymium YAG fibers are clad with a high index glass, either melted around the fiber in a trough or extruded over the fiber surface. Lithium niobate fibers are clad through an impregnation process. The lithium niobate fiber is first coated with magnesium oxide and then heated to a temperature and for a time sufficient for the magnesium oxide dopant material to diffuse into the fiber. The dopant lowers the intrinsic refractive indices of the fiber material around its circumference, creating a cladding region around the fiber core. Single crystal fibers clad by these methods and combined with suitable pumping means or with deposited electrodes provide low-loss single mode optical components useful for amplification, electro-optical effects and acousto-optical effects.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1990Date of Patent: December 31, 1991Assignee: The Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior Univ.Inventors: Robert L. Patent number: 5031980Abstract: A waveguide (10) comprises first and second light guides (12, 18) which transmit light at different wavelengths. The second light guide (18) is disposed in a tortuous path on the exterior of the first light guide (12) and preferably the tortuous path is a helix. The second light guide (18) emits light at an angle to the light emitted from the first light guide (12) and typically the light from the first light guide is emitted axially. The light from the first light guide is emitted at an angle by means of an angled refracting face (42) on the end of the second light guide (18) or by securing the end of the second light guide (18) to a conical end portion (28) of the first light guide (12).Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1989Date of Patent: July 16, 1991Assignee: Heriot-Watt Univ. of RiccartonInventors: Michael J. Patent number: 5000735Abstract: A hyperdermic syringe having a plunger which separates from a piston inside a barrel of the syringe after a downward stroke of the plunger preventing reuse of the syringe. The plunger breaks breakaway portions mounted inside the piston when pushed downward to unload the syringe effectively separating the plunger from the piston and destroying the syringe, preventing the piston from being withdrawn for the purpose of reloading the syringe. In another embodiment, a connector is used to releasably engage a plunger to a piston. Downward movement of the plunger causes upward extensions of the connector to move toward each other and lock together. The plunger disengages from the connector and piston after the extension lock together. A modified tip portion of a barrel containing a valve ball and valve flaps may be used to prevent the syringe from being used after a single use discharging medicinal fluid from the syringe. The valve ball blocks flow of medicinal fluid into the syringe after use of the syringe.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1989Date of Patent: March 19, 1991Assignee: The Regents of the Univ. of CaliforniaInventor: James P.
