Patent number: 4909252Abstract: A balloon catheter utilizing a perfusion balloon at one end thereof is described. The perfusion balloon has a donut shaped cross section having a central opening formed therethrough. The central opening provides a blood flow passage even when the balloon is fully inflated. When inflated, the perfusion balloon is used to dilate a stenotic region of a blood vessel or heart valve to restore blood flow. After deflation, if the blood vessel collapses, the balloon catheter of the present invention can be reinflated and kept in place while the patient is prepared for surgery. In this manner, acceptable blood flow is provided regardless of the length of time required for surgical preparation. In an alternate embodiment, a one-way valve is formed integrally with the perfusion balloon so that the present invention may be better applied to valvuloplasty. In this application, the balloon is inflated at a stenotic region of a heart valve to expand the valve and restore acceptable blood flow.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1988Date of Patent: March 20, 1990Assignee: The Regents of the Univ. of CaliforniaInventor: Jeffrey Goldberger

Patent number: 4896882Abstract: An automatic basketball return device designed to allow a basketball to be returned to the player in one or two bounces. The device is portable and may be easily put in place and removed without the need for ladders or tools. The return device is designed to be supported by the rim support bracket, between the backboard and the rim, so that virtually no additional weight is carried by the rim itself. Thus, the natural springiness of the rim is retained and its normal playing characteristics are not altered. A substantially vertical kickplate at the upper end of the device serves to forwardly deflect a basketball passing through the rim in an arched trajectory. The rebound characteristics of the ball off the kickplate depend on the arched trajectory of the ball entering the rim, thereby providing feedback to the player about the type of shot he has made.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1987Date of Patent: January 30, 1990Assignee: Auburn Research Foundation, Auburn Univ.Inventor: Brian L. Patent number: 4863713Abstract: A method and system for localizing a diagnostic or therapeutic agent to an internal target site. The system includes (1) an epitopic compound, (2) a binding protein which is effective to bind specifically with the compound and capable of localizing selectively at the target tissue, when administered parenterally, and (3) a clearing agent which can bind to and cross-link the binding protein, to form a protein aggregate which is readily cleared from the subject's bloodstream. In practicing the method of the invention, the binding protein is administered to the subject parenterally, and allowed to localize at the target site, typically within 1-4 days. This is followed by a chase with the clearing agent to remove circulating, but not target-localized binding protein. When the epitopic compound is administered, binding of the compound to the localized binding protein, and rapid clearance of unbound compound by the kidneys, results in selective localization of the compound at the target site.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1986Date of Patent: September 5, 1989Assignee: The Board of Trustees of Leland Stanford Jr. Univ.Inventors: David A. Patent number: 4804460Abstract: In the froth flotation of ore in a column, the froth/pulp interface level and the efficiency of the froth washing operation are controlled by determining a profile of temperatures measured in the froth layer and slurry below the interface. Temperatures are measured with temperature sensing elements immersed in the froth layer and extending to below the interface level. The measured profile is compared with a target profile and deviations are corrected by changing the tailings flowrate or the washwater flowrate to return a measured profile to the target profile. An inflection point in the profile occurs at the interface level. The inflection point in a measured profile is compared with a level set point, and a deviation from set point value is corrected by increasing or decreasing the flow of tailings whereby the interface level returns to its set point.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1988Date of Patent: February 14, 1989Assignee: Royal Inst. for Advancement of Learn., A.K.A. Patent number: 4742304Abstract: A multiple tuning NMR probe includes a radio frequency (RF) probe tuned by means of a circuit which creates a multiple pole circuit response in the probe, each of the poles being sufficiently separated from each other as to cause resonance of the probe at distinct frequencies. When tuning for nuclei with resonances substantially apart, this function may be accomplished using a parallel capacitor-inductor (L-C) trap with an impedance matching network. When tuning for nuclei with substantially closely spaced resonances, a tank circuit is used which has a single resonance which is split into two resonances by strongly coupling it to another tank circuit in resonance with the sample coil tank circuit.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1986Date of Patent: May 3, 1988Assignees: Phospho-Energetics, Inc., Trustees of the Univ. of PennsylvaniaInventors: Mitchell D.
