Abstract: The use of magnetic fields in the production of porous articles is generally described. Certain embodiments comprise exposing a matrix to a magnetic field such that particles within the matrix form one or more elongated regions (e.g., one or more regions in which the particles chain). In some embodiments, after the magnetic field has been applied, the particles and/or a liquid within the matrix can be at least partially removed. Removal of the particles and/or the liquid can leave behind anisotropic pores within the remainder of the matrix material.

Abstract: In this present disclosure, a computing implemented method is designed for predicting the effluent total nitrogen concentration (TN) in an urban wastewater treatment process (WWTP). The technology of this present disclosure is part of advanced manufacturing technology and belongs to both the field of control engineer and environment engineer. To improve the predicting efficiency, a recurrent self-organizing radial basis function (RBF) neural network (RSORBFNN) can adjust the structure and parameters simultaneously. This RSORBFNN is developed to implement this method, and then the proposed RSORBFNN-based method can predict the effluent TN concentration with acceptable accuracy. Moreover, online information of effluent TN concentration may be predicted by this computing implemented method to enhance the quality monitoring level to alleviate the current situation of wastewater and to strengthen the management of WWTP.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a probe useful for the selective detection of metallo-beta-lactamases, in particular carbapenemases, thereby distinguishing those species of bacteria that are carbapenem-resistant from bacterial strains that are sensitive. Cephalospori based probes that have the 6,7 R,R configuration are susceptible to cleavage by beta-lactamases but cannot distinguish between cleavage by metallo-beta-lactamases and other beta-lactamases. By modifying a side group of the cephalosporin, selectivity can be introduced allowing the probes to distinguish between various types of metallo-beta-lactamases.

Abstract: An information processing system including multiple memory devices and a processor configured to select one node group associated with a time point included in a time period between a current time point and a time point before a predetermined time including the current time point among multiple node groups each associated with one of multiple time points, and store the N pieces of distributed data one to each of N memory devices included in the selected node group. The information processing system carries out a restoring process on at least one of the multiple node groups, and if the restoring results in failure, carries out the restoring process on a second node group associated with a time point before a time point associated with the first node group that causes the failure among the plurality of node groups.
Abstract: The invention proposes a fault-tolerant field-oriented control method of five-phase interior permanent-magnet fault-tolerant linear motor (IPM-FTLM) with two nonadjacent short-circuit phase faults. Firstly, the extended Clark transformation matrix can be obtained according to the principle that magnetic motive force (MMF) keeps constant before and after the two-phase open-circuit faults, the constraint that the sum of healthy phase currents is zero and the adjacent two-phase current amplitude is equal. The back electric motive force (EMF) can be estimated by the transposed matrix. The nonlinear strong coupling system becomes the first-order inertia system when using the internal mode controller, the first-order inertia feed-forward voltage compensator and back-EMF observer, as the motor is with fault.

Abstract: Apparatus, methods, and systems for in-line detection of chemical compounds in beer are provided. In these apparatus, methods, and systems, a small sample of wort is removed from a fermentation vessel, heated, analyzed by infrared attenuated total reflectance (IR-ATR) spectroscopy, and returned to the fermentation vessel. The concentrations of one or more chemical compounds in the wort can be ascertained directly from IR-ATR spectroscopy data, or indirectly from applying an algorithm to the IR-ATR spectroscopy data based on known reaction kinetics and stoichiometry. The apparatus, methods, and systems do not destroy the wort sample or contaminate the fermenting wort and so can be employed continuously during fermentation, and are rapid, accurate, and inexpensive.
Abstract: Devices, systems and techniques are described for producing and implementing articles and materials having nanoscale and microscale structures that exhibit superhydrophobic, superoleophobic or omniphobic surface properties and other enhanced properties. In one aspect, a surface nanostructure can be formed by adding a silicon-containing buffer layer such as silicon, silicon oxide or silicon nitride layer, followed by metal film deposition and heating to convert the metal film into balled-up, discrete islands to form an etch mask. The buffer layer can be etched using the etch mask to create an array of pillar structures underneath the etch mask, in which the pillar structures have a shape that includes cylinders, negatively tapered rods, or cones and are vertically aligned. In another aspect, a method of fabricating microscale or nanoscale polymer or metal structures on a substrate is made by photolithography and/or nano imprinting lithography.

Abstract: A method for dual-contrast unenhanced magnetic resonance angiography includes iteratively acquiring flow-dependent slices and flow-independent slices in a region. Each iteration of the acquisition process comprises identifying a flow-dependent slice location within the region and identifying a flow-independent slice location upstream from the flow-dependent slice location according to blood flow in the region. Each iteration further includes applying a first radio frequency (RF) saturation pulse to the region such that MR signals from veins in the region are substantially suppressed, and applying a second RF saturation pulse to the flow-dependent slice location such that MR signals from background muscle and arterial blood in the region are substantially suppressed. A flow independent slice is acquired at the flow-independent slice location after the second RF saturation pulse is applied and before unsaturated arterial blood has maximally flowed into the region.
