Abstract: A method for communication at the speed of light over an on-chip interconnect is disclosed. The method includes dividing an on-chip interconnect into a plurality of segments. Each of the plurality of segments includes a transmission line and a tapered buffer. The tapered buffer is connected to the transmission line. An input capacitance of the tapered buffer satisfies a capacitance condition. A driver resistance of the tapered buffer satisfies a resistance condition.

Abstract: This disclosure relates generally to the facile and selective mono-perfluoro and -polyfluoroarylation of Meldrum's acid to generate a versatile synthon for highly fluorinated alpha-phenyl acetic acid derivatives which provide straightforward access to fluorinated building blocks. The reaction takes place quickly and all products were isolated without the need for chromatography. An embodiment provides an alternative strategy to access alpha-arylated Meldrum's acids which avoids the need for aryl-Pb(IV) salts or diaryliodonium salts and provides access to the tertiary product which was not previously synthetically accessible. The synthetic versatility and utility of the Meldrum's acid products is demonstrated by subjecting the products to several derivatizations of the Meldrum's acid products as well as photocatalytic hydrodefluorination which provide access to difficult but valuable synthetic targets such as multifluorinated aromatics.

Abstract: A system and a method offset the effect of a reduced load current on a power factor controller connected to a DC-to-DC converter having a switching DC-to-AC inverter driving an output rectifier that produces the load current. A frequency-dependent load impedance is coupled to the output of the inverter. The frequency-dependent load impedance is configured to have a first impedance when the inverter is operating at the minimum operating frequency. The frequency-dependent load impedance has a second impedance when the inverter is operating at the maximum operating frequency. The second impedance is lower than the first impedance and produces a dummy load current that is added to the actual load current to provide a sufficient total load current to cause the power factor controller to operate in a continuous mode even when the actual load current is insufficient to cause the power factor controller to operate in a continuous mode.
Abstract: A method for open-air pulsed laser deposition by providing a target and a substrate, configuring a laser directed to the target, reducing the pressure in the zone between the target and substrate by providing a suction having an opening proximal to the target. Optionally, shielding the zone between the target and substrate from ambient oxygen by flowing an inert gas from outside the zone. The method may accommodate very large substrates and multiple targets and multiple laser beams. The target may be tilted or remotely tilted. Matrix assisted pulsed laser deposition may be utilized.
Abstract: A sensor of a brightness limiting system of a vehicle may sense light from light sources around the vehicle and provide a light measurement signal. The light measurement signal may include information about brightness levels and positions of light sources relative to a window of the vehicle. A brightness controller may monitor the light source measurement signal and perform comparisons of brightness levels from the light measurement signal with brightness thresholds. The brightness controller may determine that a brightness level of a light source exceeds a brightness threshold and may provide a brightness control signal to a brightness control layer positioned adjacent to the window of the vehicle. The brightness control layer may receive the brightness control signal and limit the brightness level of light based on the brightness threshold at a brightness control area of the brightness control layer.

Abstract: An eye alignment monitor and method are described for the detection of variability of the relative alignment of the two eyes with each other, thereby detecting deficits of binocular function, for use as a screening device for these abnormalities especially in infants and young children. Each embodiment includes means for tracking of the positions of a subject's two eyes simultaneously, and furthermore includes repetitive calculation of the relative positions of the two eyes with respect to each other. The embodiments do not require fixation by either eye on a specific point. Typically, a movie on a video display is used for viewing by the subject. Variability of relative alignment of the two eyes with each other is typically determined by variability of the relative positions of images of the pupils of the eyes with respect to each other over time.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a method of preparing polymeric photoluminescent dots in water using inexpensive non-conjugated polymers. The resulting polymeric photoluminescent dots display the following properties: excellent water dispersibility, low toxicity, high absorptivity, good photo-stability and high quantum yield. The photoluminescent properties are not influenced by aggregation-caused quenching effect. The method is amenable to scale-up and is environmentally friendly.
