Abstract: A method of controlling a motor may include receiving command data indicating only a desired torque and/or force for the motor and including no torque and/or force or current feedback data from the motor. Based on the command data and at least one motor characteristic and no separate torque and/or force or current feedback data, a voltage signal corresponding to a desired motor current to produce the desired torque and/or force may be generated. A control signal configured to provide the motor with the desired motor current may be generated using only the voltage signal as an input. The motor may be controlled by inputting the control signal to the motor, and the inputting may cause the motor to output substantially the desired torque and/or force.

Abstract: Methods are disclosed for determining a prognosis of a test patient following or during a surgical procedure. In some embodiments, the disclosed methods comprise forming a test data vector characterizing concurrent measures of mean arterial pressure (MAP), bispectral index (BIS), and standard minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of the test patient from sequential time intervals during the surgical procedure. A K-means clustering procedure is performed on the test data vector and a plurality of reference data vectors characterizing concurrent MAP, BIS, and MAC measures for sequential time intervals during surgical procedures from reference patients with known clinical outcome. A prognosis of one or more post-surgical outcomes of the test patient is determined based on the known surgical outcome of reference patients in the cluster including the test data vector.

Abstract: The present invention is related to diagnostic, treatment and compound screening methods related to dry age-related macular degeneration (dry AM D). In select embodiments, the methods comprise determining expression or activity levels of NAD-dependent deacetylase sirtuin-1 (SI RT-1), AM P-activated protein kinase (AM PK), poly(adenosine diphosphate ribose) poly-merase-2 (PARP2), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-I?) and/or mRNA levels of RAC-gamma serine/threonine-protein kinase (AKT3). In general, higher levels of PARP2, lower levels of PGC-I? or AKT3 and/or higher acetylation levels of PGC-I? in the samples are indicative that the subject or cells from which the samples are obtained are susceptible or are suffering from dry AMD.

Abstract: In one aspect, the invention provides methods of inhibiting the effects of MASP-2-dependent complement activation in a living subject. The methods comprise the step of administering, to a subject in need thereof, an amount of a MASP-2 inhibitory agent effective to inhibit MASP-2-dependent complement activation. In some embodiments, the MASP-2 inhibitory agent inhibits cellular injury associated with MASP-2-mediated alternative complement pathway activation, while leaving the classical (C1q-dependent) pathway component of the immune system intact. In another aspect, the invention provides compositions for inhibiting the effects of lectin-dependent complement activation, comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a MASP-2 inhibitory agent and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
