Abstract: A method of fabricating composite filaments is provided. An initial composite filament including a core and a cladding (such as a Pt-group metal) is cut into smaller pieces (or is first mechanically reduced and then cut into smaller pieces). The smaller pieces of the filaments are inserted into a metal matrix, and the entire structure is then further reduced mechanically in a series of reduction steps. The process can be repeated until the desired cross sectional dimension of the filaments is achieved. The matrix can then be chemically removed to isolate the final composite filaments with the cladding thickness down to the nanometer range. The process allows the organization and integration of filaments of different sizes, compositions, and functionalities into arrays suitable for various applications.

Abstract: Described herein is a method, and compositions useful with the method, of analyzing a tissue from a subject. The method includes contacting a probe conjugate (10) including a probe molecule (12), to a biological tissue 146 from a subject. The probe conjugate (10) is contacted with the biological tissue (14) under a well defined and easily controlled force field(s) and that tends to result in an interaction between the molecular probe (12) and the tissue (14) and/or tends to disrupt such interactions. The resulting interaction of the molecular probe (12) with the tissue (14) is then quantified. The analytical methods may be useful for diagnostic and prognostic applications as well as in the discovery of novel drug delivery systems and novel therapeutic substances and targets.

Abstract: A fiberized single photon sensitive spectrometer on a 32-channel PMT sensor is highly sensitive with broad detection dynamic range. The spectrometer enables accurate and high speed detection, identification and analysis of biological samples labeled with multiple fluorescent markers, such as compositions of multi-color fluorescence signals or radiation emitted by multiple fluorescence dyes. A fiberized optical input of the spectrometer allows an easy and efficient coupling to any measurement system based on fiber collection of the analyzed fluorescence. The spectrometer provides highly accurate DNA sequencing. A 32 channel PMT single photon detector has a detection dynamic range of more than 20 bits and has a frame rate of about 3300 frames per second. The dynamic range of the detector's pixels reaches 108 photocounts per second.

These NDGA derivatives have a nitroimidazole moiety and these derivatives show preferential toxicity to hypoxic cells as hypoxic cytotoxins. Their cytotoxicity toward hypoxic cells is a result of abstraction of hydrogen from target molecules by free radicals formed in the reduction of the nitro group. This makes the disclosed compounds an effective anti cancer drug because hypoxic cells are generally considered to be more resistant to anti cancer drugs than normal cells. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds, as well as methods of use, and treatment for cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer and prostate cancer, are also provided.
