  • Publication number: 20140057795
Abstract: The present invention provides methods of assessing an individual subject's risk of developing prostate cancer, comprising: a) analyzing a nucleic acid sample obtained from the subject and determining a genotype for the subject at a plurality of biallelic polymorphic loci, wherein each of said plurality has an associated allele and an unassociated allele, wherein the genotype is selected from the group consisting of homozygous for the associated allele, heterozygous, and homozygous for the unassociated allele; and b) calculating a cumulative relative risk (CRR) for the subject based on the genotype determined in step (a). A CRR of greater than 1.00 identifies a subject as having an increased risk of developing prostate cancer and also can identify a subject who is a candidate for early PSA screening, prostate biopsy and/or chemoprevention.

  • Publication number: 20140055621
Abstract: Technologies are generally described for automatically optimizing an efficiency of camera placement, numbers, and resolution in multi-camera monitoring and surveillance applications. In some examples, a fraction of a total area may be monitored at a higher resolution than the rest. Employing techniques such as combinatorial state Viterbi technique or combinatorial state trellis technique, a minimum number of cameras that provide the coverage at the needed resolution may be selected. Similarly, a number of points may be covered with at least a predefined number of cameras. For example, a subject of interest may be tracked in a public area, where specific camera(s) may be used to image the subject's face at a higher resolution than the background.

  • Patent number: 8659009
Abstract: A locally gated graphene nanostructure is described, along with methods of making and using the same. A graphene layer can include first and second terminal regions separated by a substantially single layer gated graphene nanoconstriction. A local first gate region can be separated from the graphene nanoconstriction by a first gate dielectric. The local first gate region can be capacitively coupled to gate electrical conduction in the graphene nanoconstriction. A second gate region can be separated from the graphene nanoconstriction by a second gate dielectric. The second gate region can be capacitively coupled to provide a bias to a first location in the graphene nanoconstriction and to a second location outside of the graphene nanoconstriction. Methods of making and using locally gated graphene nanostructures are also described.

  • Patent number: 8656776
Abstract: The current invention is a novel gyroscope design, which yields devices robust to fabrication and environmental variations, allows flexible selection of operational parameters, and provides increased bandwidth with minimized sacrifice in gain regardless of the selected frequency of operation. The gyroscope has a single degree-of-freedom (DOF) drive-mode and a 2-DOF sense-mode. The drive-mode operational frequency and the sense-mode bandwidth can be selected arbitrarily in the proposed design, relaxing the tradeoff between the gain, die size, and detection capacitance. The symmetry of the structure ensures the optimal location of the drive-mode resonance relative to the sense-mode operational region, even in presence of fabrication imperfections.

  • Patent number: 8658777
Abstract: It is an object of the invention to provide novel approaches capable of detecting activated protease and also detecting protease activation on real time at a high sensitivity in a noninvasive manner. By the method for detecting activated protease of the invention, an indicator in a circular form comprising the C-half fragment of luciferase (Luc-C) and the N-half fragment of luciferase (Luc-N) linked together through a substrate peptide for a protease is introduced in an in vitro assay system or in cells. Upon digestion of the substrate peptide by the protease, Luc-N and Luc-C together reconstructs active luciferase, so that the activated protease can be detected by assaying the luminescence signal from the luciferase.

  • Patent number: 8660807
Abstract: A substation-control center tow-level distributed grid nonlinear state estimation method is provided. RTU measurement data and PMU measurement data at each voltage level in each substation are collected. Performing a first three-phase state estimation is performed to obtain a first estimation result. Bad data from the RTU measurement data and the PMU measurement data are removed to estimate a state of a CB. A new CB island at each voltage level is formed, and a second three-phase state estimation for the new CB island is performed to obtain a final estimation result, in which the new CB island is a bus. The final estimation result is processed to obtain ripe data. And the ripe data, a part of the RTU measurement data and a part of the PMU measurement data are collected and a whole grid state estimation is performed.

  • Patent number: 8661310
Abstract: To decode a representation of a codeword that encodes K information bits as N>K codeword bits, messages are exchanged between N bit nodes and N?K check nodes of a graph in which E edges connect the bit nodes and the check nodes. While messages are exchanged, fewer than E of the messages are stored, and/or fewer than N soft estimates of the codeword bits are stored. In some embodiments, the messages are exchanged only within sub-graphs and between the sub-graphs and one or more external check nodes. While messages are exchanged, the largest number of stored messages is the number of edges in the sub-graph with the most edges plus the number of edges that connect the sub-graphs to the external check node(s), and/or the largest number of stored soft estimates is the number of bit nodes in the sub-graph with the most bit nodes.

  • Patent number: 8658672
Abstract: The present invention relates to a HIF-l? activator containing clioquinol and its derivatives as an active ingredient. Clioquinol and its derivatives of the invention inhibit HIF-1?(hypoxia-inducible factor-l?) ubiquitination in normoxic cells and thus accumulate HIF-l?. In the meantime, CQ inhibits FIH-I activity and thereby induces transcription activity of the accumulated HIF-l?, resulting in the induction of expressions of HIF-l? target genes VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) and EPO (erythropoietin). Therefore, clioquinol and its derivatives can be effectively used as a therapeutic agent for ischemic disease.

  • Patent number: 8658993
Abstract: A self-powered ‘near field’ lithographic system 100 includes three primary components, namely, a thin film or emitter substrate 110 including a radioactive material (e.g., a radioisotope 112), a target substrate 120 which carries an energy-modifiable layer 122 (e.g., photo-resist) and a stencil (e.g., 130) that is either positioned between the emitter and target substrates fabricated upon and defined in the emitter substrate. The stencil is made from a material capable of blocking particles emitted through radioactive decay from the radioisotope of the emitter substrate. The stencil includes openings or vias 132 patterned to permit selective transmission of the particles emitted through radioactive decay from the radioisotope of the emitter substrate 110, and the stencil is preferably placed up against (or very close to) the target substrate 120.

  • Patent number: 8661204
Abstract: The present invention employs three decoupled hardware mechanisms: read and write signatures, which summarize per-thread access sets; per-thread conflict summary tables, which identify the threads with which conflicts have occurred; and a lazy versioning mechanism, which maintains the speculative updates in the local cache and employs a thread-private buffer (in virtual memory) only in the rare event of an overflow. The conflict summary tables allow lazy conflict management to occur locally, with no global arbitration (they also support eager management). All three mechanisms are kept software-accessible, to enable virtualization and to support transactions of arbitrary length.
