Abstract: The present invention relates generally to the use of circulating cytochrome c as a biomarker of reperfusion injury that results from whole body ischemia. Circulating levels of cytochrome c can be used as predictor of survival rates and to assess the effects of interventions aimed at ameliorating mitochondrial injury during reperfusion. Whole body ischemia may be the result of cardiac arrest or from other hemodynamic crises, such as hemorrhagic shock.

Abstract: Medical device or instrument for diagnosing pressure ulcers using optical reflectance spectroscopy. The device may comprise a tip and a controller. The tip is pressed against the skin of the patient and collects the optical reflectance data. The controller processes the data to determine whether there exists a pressure ulcer and, if there is one, its depth. The tip may also include a pressure sensor for sensing the pressure at which the tip is applied to the patient's skin.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods for reducing or inhibiting angiogenesis in a tissue, by contacting ?5?1 integrin in the tissue with an agent that interferes with specific binding of the ?5?1 integrin to a ligand expressed in the tissue. The invention further provides methods of reducing or inhibiting angiogenesis in a tissue in an individual, by administering to the individual an agent that interferes with the specific binding of ?5?1 integrin to a ligand expressed in the tissue; and methods of reducing the severity of a pathological condition associated with angiogenesis in an individual, by administering to the individual an agent that interferes with specific binding of ?5?1 integrin to a ligand in a tissue associated with the pathological condition.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a transparent polyarylene ether polymer with high heat resistance and a method for preparing the same. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a polyarylene ether polymer and a method for preparing the same, wherein the polyarylene ether polymer has a repeating structure in which cardo-type aromatic diols having a large molecular volume, polyether sulfones which are amorphous polymers having a high glass transition temperature and superior film formability, and polyether ketones which are crystalline polymers having superior heat resistance and mechanical properties are sequentially arranged. The polyarylene ether polymer is both transparent and heat resistant and, thus, can be used, for example, for a flexible plastic substrate.

Abstract: The combination of the surfactant SDS with levulinic acid produces a synergistic effect in relation to the antimicrobial effectiveness of the individual compounds. Accordingly, this surprising synergy allows the formulation of compositions wherein the active agents are present at concentrations effective to reduce bacterial counts in liquids, including, but not limited to, water and other beverages, especially those having a pH value less than about 7.0 by a factor between 103 and 107 without altering the organoleptic properties of the treated food substance. The active agents are FDA-approved as food additives, and the treated beverages can be any aqueous-based beverage consumable by humans or animals.

Abstract: A method for producing fluorapatite and its application are disclosed in the present invention, which relates to the field of biomaterials for dental reparation. The present invention comprises steps of mixing tetracalcium phosphate, calcium hydrogen phosphate, and sodium fluoride to form a mixture and adding the mixture into water, or mixing tetracalcium phosphate and ammonium fluoride to form a mixture and then adding the mixture into a phosphoric acid/water solution, blending the above two sets of materials respectively to form cement-like substances; and solidifying the cement-like substances at a temperatures of 35° C. to 38° C. and a moisture of 100% for 1-3 days to produce fluorapatite. The synthesized fluorapatite has a similar chemical composition with tooth enamel, thus, the fluorapatite produced by the invention can be combined with the natural enamel directly, so as to repair enamel defects caused by caries, especially severe enamel defects (deep caries).
Abstract: A method for data encoding and associated decoding is based on the concept of batches that allows transmission of a large data file from a source node to multiple destination nodes through communication networks that may employ network coding wherein sparse matrix codes are employed in a network setting. A batch is a set of packets generated by a subset of the input packets using sparse matrix encoder. A sparse matrix encoder can be called repeatedly to generate multiple batches. The batches are generally independent of one another. During the transmission in a communication network, network coding can be applied to packets belonging to the same batch to improve the multicast throughput. A decoder recovers all or at least a fixed fraction of the input packets using received batches. The input packets can be pre-coded using a pre-code before applying sparse matrix codes. The data file can then be reconstructed by further decoding the pre-code.
