Abstract: An epoxy resin is provided that includes a diglycidyl ether of a substituted cycloaliphatic diol or bis-thiol, and a thermoset epoxy polymer is provided employing the same. The epoxy resin is bisphenol A free, and capable of forming thermoset epoxy polymers with fewer associated health and environmental concerns than conventional epoxies based on phenolic compounds.
Abstract: A device for selectively controlling the passage of thermal energy through the device from a first space to a second space by selectively varying an overall thermal conductivity of the device comprises a structure having at least one component movable from a first position to a second position and an actuator mechanically coupled to the component for moving the component from the first position to the second position. When the at least one component is positioned in the first position the device exhibits a first thermal conductivity and when the at least one component is positioned in the second position the device exhibits a second thermal conductivity different from the first thermal conductivity.

Abstract: The object of the present invention is to, by analyzing PPR proteins that act to bind to DNA with a prediction that RNA recognition rules of PPR motifs can also be used for recognition of DNA, find a PPR protein showing such a characteristic. According to the present invention, it was revealed that, with a protein that can bind in a DNA base-selective manner or a DNA base sequence-specific manner, which contains one or more, preferably 2 to 30, more preferably 5 to 25, most preferably 9 to 15, of PPR motifs having a structure of the following formula 1 (wherein, in the formula 1, Helix A is a part that can form an ?-helix structure; X does not exist, or is a part consisting of 1 to 9 amino acids; Helix B is a part that can form an ?-helix structure; and L is a part consisting of 2 to 7 amino acids), and having a specific combination of amino acids corresponding to a DNA base or DNA base sequence as amino acids of three positions of No. 1 A.A., No. 4 A.A., in Helix A of the formula 1 and No. “ii” (-2) A.A.

Abstract: A method for preparing un-hardened ceramic micro-electrolysis fillers by industrial solid wastes comprises: (1) Scrap iron, lignin, red mud and clay was completely mixed as mass ratio (4-5):(2-3):(1-3):3 and then made into pellets; (2) The dried pellets were sintered without oxygen. The production could be used in wastewater treatment, which could not only increase biodegradability but also decrease CODCr and toxicity in a short time.
Abstract: Provided herein are embodiments relating to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus, compositions comprising the virus, and methods of using the virus. Abstract: The present invention relates to a use of a human small leucine zipper protein in the adipocyte differentiation procedure. More specifically, sLZIP binds with PPAR?2 to induce the formation of a complex of HDAC3 and PPAR?2, thereby functioning as a corepressor to negatively inhibit the transcriptional activity of PPAR?2 and suppress the differentiation to adipocytes, and thus can be used as a marker for treating diabetes and obesity and developing new medicines therefor.

Abstract: Systems, apparatus and methods for a neural implant are provided. In one embodiment, a neural implant that can both optically stimulate neurons and record electrical signals from neurons is provided, including a wide band gap semiconductor opto electronic microarray, such optoelectronic microarray including a plurality of needles, each providing both optical transparency and electrical conductivity; a flexible optical conduit from the optoelectronic microarray to an optical signal source; a flexible electrical conduit from the optoelectronic microarray to an electrical signal sensor; integration of the optical and electrical conduits to a single monolithic optical cable; a circuit assembly coupled to the electrical signal source and the optical signal source; and a processor for providing control of at least one of the electrical signal sensor and the optical signal source. Further embodiments are described herein.

Abstract: Described herein is the synthesis of adhesive from simple adhesive coacervates and their uses thereof. The adhesives are produced by (a) preparing a solution comprising (1) a polyelectrolyte, wherein the polyelectrolyte comprises a polyanion or polycation but not a combination thereof, the polyeletrolyte comprises at least one crosslinking group, and (2) a sufficient amount of a complimentary counterion to produce a simple adhesive coacervate; and (b) crosslinking the simple adhesive coacervate to produce the adhesive. The adhesives have numerous medical and non-medical applications.
Abstract: Methods of manufacturing a flexible force sensor include forming a first sensor part providing a plurality of spaced first electrode plates in an electrically non-conductive material. A second sensor part is also formed and includes a plurality of second electrode plates in an electrically non-conductive material. The second electrode plates are identical to the first electrode plates at least in terms of spacing. The first part is assembled to the second part such that each of the first electrode plates are aligned with and parallel to, yet spaced from, respective ones of the second electrode plates, establishing a plurality of capacitive sensing components. The first electrode plates are movable relative to the corresponding second electrode plates, establishing a variable gap therebetween. The sensor parts can be ring-shaped. The sensor parts can be formed via MEMS techniques, with the non-conductive material being a polymer.
Abstract: A system includes a camera and a projector for capturing spatial detail having resolution exceeding that afforded by the imaging optics, and recovering topographic information lost to the projective nature of imaging. The projector projects a spatial pattern onto the scene to be captured. The spatial patterns may include any pattern or combination of patterns that result in complex sinusoidal modulation. Spatial detail such as texture on the objects in the scene modulate the amplitude of the spatial pattern, and produce Moiré fringes that shifts previously unresolved spatial frequencies into the camera's optical passband. The images may be demodulated, and the demodulated components may be combined with the un-modulated components. The resulting image has spatial detail previously inaccessible to the camera owing to the band-limited nature of the camera optics. A spatial pattern may also be projected and received by the camera to estimate topographic information about the scene.

Abstract: Compositions and methods concern organic molecules that bind to human Atox1 and CCS at the copper trafficking interface of these proteins. This binding suppresses copper trafficking, which leads to inhibition of cancer cell proliferation and tumor growth. In addition to serving as an effective treatment of cancer, these organic molecules inhibit cellular copper uptake and can be used as treatment of disorders of copper metabolism such as Wilson's disease, which is characterized by copper overload, as well as wound healing.

Abstract: The presently disclosed subject matter provides compositions and methods for the expression of CRISPR guide RNAs using the H1 promoter. In particular, compositions and methods are provided for the use of the H1 promoter to express CRISPR guide RNA (gRNA) with altered specificity of the 5? nucleotide, as well as use of the H1 promoter sequence as a bidirectional promoter to express Cas9 nuclease and the gRNA simultaneously. Compositions and methods are also provided for the expression and regulation of gRNA expression in vivo through the use of RNA ribozymes and regulatable aptazymes.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a composite separation membrane including a graphene oxide coating layer. The composite separation membrane of the present invention has both high carbon dioxide permeability and high selectivity for carbon dioxide over nitrogen, hydrogen or methane gas, is free of surface defects, and exhibits remarkably increased selectivity for carbon dioxide over other gases (hydrogen, nitrogen, methane, etc.) without any change in carbon dioxide permeability, particularly even when exposed to water. Due to these advantages, the composite separation membrane of the present invention can be applied to industrial fields involving carbon dioxide separation and recovery processes. The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing the composite separation membrane.

Abstract: The invention discloses a method to prepare N-halamine antibacterial materials based on cyanuric chloride. Firstly, cyanuric chloride is dissolved in alkaline solution to produce finishing solution. Then the materials are dipped in the finishing solution to absorb liquid. The wetted materials are taken out, cured under 90˜120° C. for 10˜40 min, chlorinated by bleach solution, washed and dried to get antibacterial materials. The processing method in this invention is simple, cheap, and energy-saving. In addition, it only caused very small loss of physical strength. The resulted materials have strong antibacterial efficacy, are safe for application.

Abstract: A first mobile monitoring system includes one or more mobile monitoring devices, a network, a server and a storage memory. The server is implemented to analyze the collected signals and the traffic information to identify at least one traffic flow according to travel routes of the one or more wireless devices; determine whether the identified at least one traffic flow exceeds an updating threshold based on the collected signals; derive at the server when the traffic flow exceeds the updating threshold, an updating priority indicating an order in which the traffic flows are processed based on the collected signals; and update a dynamic traffic transportation plan map based on the at least one traffic flow, the updating threshold and the updating priority.
