Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus protein A variants, defective in immunoglobulin binding, elicit protective immunity against staphylococcal disease. The present invention includes methods for preventing or ameliorating staphylococcal infections, particularly hospital acquired nosocomial infections. As such, the invention contemplates vaccines for use in both active and passive immunization embodiments. In certain embodiments the vaccine is an isolated recombinant staphylococcal bacteria that expresses a variant Protein A (SpA variant) comprising (a) at least one amino acid substitution that disrupts Fc binding and (b) at least a second amino acid substitution that disrupts VH3 binding variant in at least one of SpA A, B, C, D, and/or E domains.

Abstract: This invention provides a method for treating a subject afflicted with glioblastoma multiforme comprising administering a therapeutically effective regimen of temoxolomide to be glioblastoma multiforme-afflicted subject, wherein the subject's glioblastoma multiforme cells are known to be caveolin-1-positive. This invention also provides a method for determining whether a subject afflicted with glioblastoma multiforme is likely to progress therapeutically in response to a therapeutically effective regimen of temoxolomide comprising determining whether the subject's glioblastoma multiforme cells are caveolin-1-positive, whereby if the subject's glioblastoma multiforme cells are caveolin-1-positive, the subject is likely to progress therapeutically in response to a therapeutically effective regimen of temozolomide.
Abstract: A new adaptive filtering technique to reduce microphonic noise in radiation detectors is presented. The technique is based on system identification that actively cancels the microphonic noise. A sensor is used to measures mechanical disturbances that cause vibration on the detector assembly, and the digital adaptive filtering estimates the impact of these disturbances on the microphonic noise. The noise then can be subtracted from the actual detector measurement. In this paper the technique is presented and simulations are used to support this approach.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses, including computer programs encoded on computer-readable media, for receiving, from an accelerometer, angle information of a device. A calibration position is measured based upon the angle information of the device when the device is at rest. A current position is constantly measured based upon the angle information of the device. A current pressure is calculated based upon the current position and the calibration position. The current pressure can be used to augment an audio signal and/or used to augment an audio instruction.
Abstract: The present invention provides a thermoelectric generator module including a set of module unit bodies disposed between a hot source and a cold source to serve as fundamental structures for performing thermoelectric power generation and a method of manufacturing the thermoelectric generator module. Each of the module unit bodies comprises: a first electrodes disposed at one of the hot source and the cold source; a second electrode disposed at the other of the hot source and the cold source so as to be spaced apart from the first electrodes; a first nanowire configured to interconnect the first electrode and the second electrode and composed of an n-type or p-type semiconductor; and a second nanowire.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a pipe line, water supplying devices, gas supplying devices, a plasma generation device, a cooling device for cooling water flowing in the pipe line, and a vessel. The plasma generation device has a high-voltage electrode and a ground electrode which are provided outside the pipe line to face each other with the pipe line interposed therebetween and applies a plasma treatment continuously to the water flowing in the pipe line by generating dielectric barrier discharge between the high-voltage electrode and the ground electrode. The cooling device cools the water to have a low temperature of 10° C. or lower. The plasma treatment is applied to generate a plasma-treated solution in which superoxide anion radicals (O2?.) or a precursor thereof is diffused in the water and a microbicidal activity is sustained.
