Abstract: A method for detecting a gas phase constituent such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen, or hydrocarbons in a gas comprising oxygen such as air, includes providing a sensing material or film having a metal embedded in a catalytically active matrix such as gold embedded in a yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) matrix. The method may include annealing the sensing material at about 900° C., exposing the sensing material and gas to a temperature above 400° C., projecting light onto the sensing material, and detecting a change in the absorption spectrum of the sensing material due to the exposure of the sensing material to the gas in air at the temperature which causes a chemical reaction in the sensing material compared to the absorption spectrum of the sensing material in the absence of the gas. Systems employing such a method are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for the use of fluorogenic probes for development of a rapid, and cost-effective determination of lead clearance following lead hazard control activities. The invention involves the use of fluorogenic chemosensors for efficient detection of lead in dust on hard surfaces at regulatory levels. The use of methods for lead visualization based on one or more of the fluorogenic type compounds would be highly beneficial to lead abatement projects. The identification of areas of high lead concentration (hotspots) can allow work to be focused on areas that have the greatest impact on clearance. Also, a rapid and cost-effective means of determining if lead clearance has been met can improve compliance with lead abatement activities. This would decrease the amount of time and materials spent in general surface cleaning and allow the elimination of isolated areas of lead concentration that may otherwise have been missed.

Abstract: [PROBLEMS] To provide a semiconductor element manufacturing method by which a semiconductor element having high accuracy and high function can be manufactured by controlling diffusion depth and diffusion concentration in a pn junction region with high accuracy. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] A diffusion control layer (2) composed of a thin film of a substance having a smaller diffusion coefficient than that of a diffusion source (3) is formed between a surface of a substrate (1) and the diffusion source (3), and an element of the diffusion source (3) is permitted to thermally diffuse through the diffusion control layer (2). Thus, the diffusion depth and the diffusion concentration in the semiconductor region, which is formed on the surface portion of the substrate and has a conductivity type different from that of the substrate, can be highly accurately controlled, and the semiconductor element having high accuracy and high function can be manufactured.

Abstract: A radiation imaging system is configured by a collimator 30A including a detector 21 with a discrete detection pixel corresponding with a pixel and a plurality of radiation passages 31 and looks into a plurality of detectors 21 through one radiation passage 31 to set a step width of rotation around a rotation center axis X1 only for an angle ?p made by lines provided by connecting a center detector 21 of the radiation passage 31 and the adjacent two detectors 21. In the case of generating a flat plane projection image for one direction, radio-graphing is carried out on a projection image in a plurality of predetermined angle positions (??p, 0, +?p) in the circumferential direction of the rotation center axis X1 and thereby one plane projection image is obtained.

Abstract: Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3Ks) are known to be important regulators of signaling pathways. To determine whether PI3Ks are genetically altered in cancers, we analyzed the sequences of the P13K gene family and discovered that one family member, PIK3CA, is frequently mutated in cancers of the colon and other organs. The majority of mutations clustered near two positions within the P13K helical or kinase domains. PIK3CA represents one of the most highly mutated oncogenes yet identified in human cancers and is useful as a diagnostic and therapeutic target.

Abstract: A production method is provided that enables to produce a large-sized bulk silicon carbide (SiC) crystal of high quality at low cost. A large-sized bulk silicon carbide (SiC) crystal of high quality can be obtained at a lower temperature by reacting silicon (Si) and carbon (C) produced from a lithium carbide such as dilithium acetylide (Li2C2) with each other in an alkali metal melt and thereby producing or growing a silicon carbide (SiC) crystal. FIG. 17 shows a high-resolution TEM (HR-TEM) image of the resultant 2H—SiC crystal. A preferable lithium carbide is dilithium acetylide (Li2C2). A preferable alkali metal melt is a melt of lithium alone.

Abstract: The present invention provides a Hybrid GA (HGA) in which local optimization operation is performed to only a few individual with lower fitness selected from each population of widely distributed generations in genetic algorithm (GA). Since this HGA shows very powerful global searching ability even in a vast multi-dimensional parameter space with strong multi-peak feature, the present invention may efficiently determine a number of structural parameters from a little information included in X-ray diffraction circles. As a result, the present invention may determine a complicated material structure from powder specimen even though it is hard to make a single crystal specimen. Thus, the development of new materials would be highly accelerated in the field of medicines or materials, etc.
