Abstract: This invention relates to embodiment to a molecular beacon, methods and kits for the detection of expression of p21(Waf1/Cip1), in response to chemotherapy. Specifically, the introduction of a phosphorothioate-modified p21-beacon by transfection in human tumor cells yields increased signal in a dose dependent manner.

Abstract: Devices and methods for locating a target site for the electrical stimulation of muscles are disclosed. The intensity of a search stimulus is varied continuously near the threshold to evoke an M-wave recorded by EMG electrodes. A feedback signal allows the clinician to judge when the threshold is sufficiently low to warrant the implantation of the stimulation electrodes at that site.

Abstract: The present invention provides a clothes holding device which is easily assembled (formed) as a clothes holding device (for example, a hanger), which is compact, which has an interior function for use as an interior material. The device includes a plate member having flexibility, wherein the plate member is bent on the symmetrical axis, and clothes are held with a resulting bent portion. When clothes are not held, the clothes holding device of the present invention is assimilated with the surface of a wall, and appears to be a part of a room's interior. When holding clothes, a vertical-directional lower area of the plate member is bent along the horizontal axis, and the bent portion and the remaining portion hold clothes.

Abstract: A genetic locus and corresponding family of proteins associated with regulation of immune function and cell survival are provided. These genes encode cell surface molecules with conserved IgV and mucin domains. The locus comprising the TIM family is genetically associated with immune dysfunction, including asthma. Furthermore, the TIM gene family is located within a region of human chromosome 5 that is commonly deleted in malignancies and myelodysplastic syndrome. Polymorphisms in the gene sequences are associated with the development of airway hyperreactivity and allergic inflammation, and T cell production of IL-4 and IL-13. The proteins include the human hepatitis A cellular receptor, hHAVcr-1.

Abstract: A diaphragm air pump comprises a pump chamber, a diaphragm and one or more piezoelectric beams or bimorphs. Fluid flows into the pump chamber and then flows out of it, the diaphragm is provided within the pump chamber, and one or more central openings are formed in the diaphragm. One or more central check valves are provided in the central openings. The diaphragm is just bonded with piezoelectric beams, not fixed to the lower housing of the pump chamber in order to get large displacement. With the provided diaphragm air pump, it is possible to actively adjust the air quantity according to the requirement for fuel cell or a part-to-be-cooled, and it is also possible to reduce noise and power consumption compared with a conventional fan type cooler or air pumps.

Abstract: There is disclosed an improved high-throughput and quantitative process for determining methylation patterns in genomic DNA samples based on amplifying modified nucleic acid, and detecting methylated nucleic acid based on amplification-dependent displacement of specifically annealed hybridization probes. Specifically, the inventive process provides for treating genomic DNA samples with sodium bisulfite to create methylation-dependent sequence differences, followed by detection with fluorescence-based quantitative PCR techniques. The process is particularly well suited for the rapid analysis of a large number of nucleic acid samples, such as those from collections of tumor tissues.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for cryopreserving living animal cells in immunoisolation membranes, including: (1) cutting out a living organ from an animal, (2) digesting the cutout organ into the discrete living animal cells and separating the discrete cells, (3) suspending the separated cells in a solution of sodium chloride containing sodium alginate and collagen, (4) forming microcapsules of the living animal cells by using the resulting suspension, (5) forming immunoisolation membranes around outer surfaces of the microcapsules of the living animal cells by covering the outer surfaces with alginate-(poly-L-lysine) and thereby obtaining the living animal cells enclosed in the immunoisolation membranes, (6) suspending the resulting living animal cells enclosed in the immunocapsules in a cell damage-preventing solution, and (7) immediately freezing the thus obtained suspension with liquid nitrogen.
Abstract: An amplifier array circuit is provided. An amplifier array includes a main amplifier array comprising a plurality of first amplifiers and a plurality of reference voltages, wherein the first amplifier is coupled to an input signal and the reference voltage corresponding to the first amplifier. A first reversed reference voltage amplifier array is located on one side of the main amplifier array and has a plurality of second amplifiers coupled to the input signal and the reference voltages, respectively. A second reversed reference voltage amplifier array is located on the other side of the main amplifier array and has a plurality of third amplifiers coupled to the input signal and the reference voltages respectively. The averaging network is coupled to a first output terminal and a second output terminal of the first, second and third amplifiers.
Abstract: This invention relates to a novel soy isoflavone product with high purities and strong biological activities and the method of producing the same from natural soybeans, soybean materials (i.e. tofu dregs, soy molasses) and other plant sources. The method includes three steps consisting of extraction with an organic solvent, hydrolysis using an acid and crystallization using an antisolvent. The procedure is very simple and thus can be easily adapted for large-scale manufacturing. Moreover, the procedure is able to produce a high yield of total isoflavones at a lower cost. HPLC analysis and E-Screen bioassay reveal that the obtained product not only contains a high content of isoflavone aglycones by weight of dry matter but also exhibits strong estrogenic activity toward human cells. Therefore, the product should be efficacious for relieving menopausal symptoms and other estrogen-deficient diseases and can be used in health care supplements or as additives for foods, beverages or cosmetics.

Abstract: An imager (200) including a spatially varying optical element (204) which moves while the imager records a sequence of images. The optical element (204) can be an intensity reduction filter, a spectral or polarization filter, or a refractive or reflective element. Because the optical element (204) moves between frames, each scene portion is captured under a range of imaging conditions. A spatially varying intensity reduction filter enables imaging of each scene portion using multiple, different exposure to generate a high dynamic range image. A spatially varying spectral or polarization filter enables measurement of the spectral or polarization characteristics of radiation from each scene portion. A refractive or reflective element enables imaging of scene portions under various focal characteristics, thereby providing depth information and producing an image which is focused everywhere.

Abstract: The present invention relates to polythiophenes, particularly regioregular head-to-tail poly(3-alkylthiophenes) (HT-PATs), block copolymers made therefrom, and their methods of formation. The present invention provides HT-PATs with well-defined, specific end-groups, functionalization of the defined HT-PATs, and incorporation of end group functionalized HT-PATs into block copolymers with structural polymers. The intrinsically conductive diblock and triblock copolymers, formed from the HT-PATs, have excellent conductivity and low polydispersities that are useful in a number of applications. The block copolymers of the present invention have been found to exhibit conductivities that range from a low of 10?8 S/cm for certain applications to as high as several hundred S/cm or more.
