  • Publication number: 20140108426
Abstract: A system for interactive visualization of items in an online environment based on textual and quantitative properties of those items is described. End-users of the system are humans and items can be any objects such as songs, books, and other users. One aspect of the system is a process used to map an item's quantitative and textual data into a position in the visualization, e.g., a two or three dimensional space. Using transformation matrices canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and a specific item's quantitative and textual data, the system projects an item onto the visualization and uses ratings and spatial positions to assign reputation values to each end-user and their textual responses to facilitate efficient browsing and rating of items and viewing of patterns, trends, and insights as they emerge.

Abstract: Vapor wake detection is a highly advantageous method and system for detecting explosives and other illicit substances. With vapor wake detection, a canine and a handler are used; however, unlike other detection schemes, the canine leads the handler. After the handler positions the canine in a desired location, the canine detects scents in the air that come to the canine. When the canine detects a trained scent, the canine leads the handler to or follows behind the carrier of the item with the scent. Once the carrier is identified by the handler, the proper personnel are contacted. To implement vapor wake detection effectively, specific rigorous training is utilized.

  • Publication number: 20140105826
Abstract: Reduced dyes, such as hydrocyanines, deuterocyanines, and/or other deuterated dyes capable of detecting one or more reactive oxygen species are described herein. The reduced dyes exhibit little or no fluorescence due to the disrupted ? conjugation. However, upon reaction with ROS, the reduced dyes are oxidized, regenerating the extended ? conjugation and causing a substantial increase in fluorescence intensity. In many case, the oxidized dye is generally membrane impermeable. However, upon reduction, many of the reduced dyes are membrane permeable. Thus, reduced dyes can accumulate in cells and/or tissue to amplify the signal. Once inside the cell or tissue, the reduced dye is reoxidized upon reaction with ROS, and the oxidized dye again becomes membrane impermeable, trapping the dye within the cell. The reduced dyes can be used to image ROS, such as hydroxide radical and superoxide, in serum, cell cultures, tissue explants, and in vivo.
