  • Patent number: 4626341
Abstract: A process is disclosed for removing mercaptans from highly olefinic feed streams by extraction with an aqueous alkaline solution. The aqueous solution is preferably regenerated by oxidation of extracted mercaptans to disulfides. The invention employs two extraction steps performed on the aqueous solution to limit the passage of olefins or acetylenes into the mercaptan conversion zone and to limit the passage of mercaptans and/or oxygenates into the primary extraction zone.

  • Patent number: 4620284
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for qualitative and quantitative analysis utilizing the Raman effect. Analyses are obtainable without exercise of human judgment or human interpretation. Analyses may be obtained on-line in the field or in a laboratory. A wide range of fluids and solids are capable of rapid routine analysis without major adjustment of equipment. An analysis is obtained by comparing a Raman spectrum of the unknown sample to Raman spectra of samples whose analysis is known. The known Raman spectra are stored in computing means in digital form and the comparison is accomplished by the computing means.

  • Patent number: 4620047
Abstract: An adsorptive separation process for separating ortho-nitrotoluene from a feed mixture comprising the ortho-isomer and at least one other isomer of nitrotoluene. The process comprises contacting the feed mixture with an adsorbent comprising a type X zeolite, containing at the exchangeable cationic sites cations of metals from Group IA or IIA of the Periodic Table of Elements, selectively adsorbing substantially all of the ortho-nitrotoluene to the substantial exclusion of the remaining isomers, removing the non-adsorbed portion of the feed mixture from contact with the adsorbent, and thereafter recovering high-purity ortho-isomer by desorption with nitrobenzene.

  • Patent number: 4615792
Abstract: A system is disclosed for circulating an ancillary hydrogen-rich gas stream through a part of a moving bed hydrocarbon conversion process. The gas stream may be employed in lockhopper systems, catalyst transfer equipment and catalyst treating zones as for reducing the catalyst. The used ancillary gas is discharged into a partitioned vapor-liquid separation vessel. The partially condensed reaction zone effluent stream is discharged into a different chamber of the same vessel. The net off gas stream is withdrawn from the chamber receiving the used ancillary gas to prevent contamination of a recycle gas stream, which is drawn off the other chamber.

  • Patent number: 4609457
Abstract: Method of operation for a continuous countercurrent extraction zone, to which a charge mixture stream and a solvent stream are continuously supplied and from which an extract stream and a raffinate stream are continuously withdrawn. In one embodiment, the method comprises establishing a recycle stream consisting of a portion of the light phase stream withdrawn from the column, combining the recycle stream with the charge mixture stream, and controlling the streams flowing to and from the column. The combined feed stream to the extraction zone is controlled at a constant flow rate and recycle flow has preference over charge mixture flow, thereby causing charge stream flow to vary inversely with recycle flow. An important feature of the invention resides in adjustment of composition of this total combined feed stream to the extraction zone in order to deal with fluctuations in other parameters.

  • Patent number: 4608060
Abstract: Polar gases such as hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and ammonia may be separated from nonpolar gases such as methane, nitrogen, hydrogen or carbon dioxide by passing a mixture of polar and nonpolar gases over the face of a multicomponent membrane at separation conditions. The multicomponent membrane which is used to effect the separation will comprise a mixture of a glycol plasticizer having a molecular weight of from about 200 to about 600 and an organic polymer cast on a porous support. The use of such membranes as exemplified by polyethylene glycol and silicon rubber composited on polysulfone will permit greater selectivity accompanied by a high flux rate in the separation process.

  • Patent number: 4604438
Abstract: Novel high temperature thermoset terpolymers may be synthesized by reacting an alpha-substituted olefin, an alpha,beta-disubstituted olefin and a dual function monomer followed by cross-linking the resultant polymer with a low molecular weight multifunctional amine as the cross-linking agent in the presence of a catalyst. The resulting cross-linking agent is then cured at an elevated temperature to provide the desired terpolymer. This compound will possess desirable properties such as a low dielectric constant which renders it applicable for use as circuit board laminates.
