  • Patent number: 6397739
Abstract: A calendering method and calender in which a web material is passed through a calender, the calender nip being defined between a heatable hard roll and an endless, flexible and substantially non-compressible calendering belt. The heatable roll is heated in order to plasticize the surface layer of the web and the web is brought into contact with the heatable roll before the calendering of the web. After the preliminary contact of the web with the heatable roll a press treatment proper is applied to the web to be calendered in two stages. First a deformation is produced in the web in a press stage, after that the deformation that was produced is allowed to be reversed partially in a reversing stage and then a new deformation is produced in the web by pressing the web again in a finishing stage.

  • Patent number: 6379227
Abstract: An abrasive-band grinding device for rolls and method for grinding rolls in which a motor rotates an abrasive band such that the abrasive band is pressed against the face of the roll to be ground. Guide pulleys are arranged in a loop of the abrasive band and, between the guide pulleys, a rotatable contact pulley is arranged over which the abrasive band is pressed against the face to be ground. The contact pulley is controlled by an actuator, preferably a motor, so that it can be inclined in relation to the roll face to be ground.

  • Patent number: 6370953
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for balancing a cylinder, roll, or equivalent part, with a thin mantle, by which deviations in the circumferential deflection line of the mantle can be compensated in order to correct for dynamic runout. Errors in the circumferential deflection line are measured and dynamic runout is determined. Locations and magnitudes of any counterweights necessary for balancing are determined based on deformations and dynamic runout arising from deviations in the deflection line of the mantle. Counterweights are fixed to the inner face of the mantle of the cylinder, roll or equivalent part at positions determined from measurements.

  • Patent number: 6372090
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing paper or board, according to which the paper or board web is transferred continuously supported through a drying section of a paper or cardboard machine and both sides of the web are treated with a treating agent on a long nip applicator included with the drying section of the machine. The web is transferred from the last press nip of the press section to the first dryer of the dryer section with a continuous loop-like support member, for example, by a transfer belt, transfer felt or one of the press felts of the press section. The web is advantageously dried in the drying section with a blow unit on a porous drying felt by blowing hot air on the web with impingement dryers, and the drying felt may be cooled.

  • Patent number: 6368466
Abstract: A press section of a paper making machine for dewatering a paper web (W) formed in a preceding forming section in which dewatering felts (11, 28) are applied to both surfaces of the paper web (W) as the paper web (W) travels in a closed draw from the forming section through a first extended nip press (NP1), thereby drawing a substantial amount of water simultaneously and symmetrically from both surfaces of the paper web (W). The upper felt (11) transports the paper web (W) from the first extended nip (NP1) to a smooth surfaced center roll (30) where the paper web (W) passes through at least one roll nip (N1, N2) or extended nip (NP2′, NP3′). The center roll (30) is positioned at an elevation higher than the first extended nip (NP1) thereby reducing the length of the press section. In a second roll nip (N2), a press fabric (33) is substituted for the upper felt (11) to efficiently remove additional water.

  • Patent number: 6346066
Abstract: A tubular roll with glide bearings and a method for providing a tubular roll mantle with glide bearings. The roll mantle is supported on a roll axle by hydraulic glide bearing elements which are loaded hydraulically by a pressure medium. The roll is loaded from outside radially in a principal loading direction and the roll mantle is supported on the roll axle by glide bearing elements in the principal loading direction. The loading pressure and lubricant are fed to the glide bearing elements as separated from one another so that the movement of the roll mantle, the speed of movement and the change in speed are regulated by opening, closing and/or throttling the flow in the pressure duct of the loading pressure. The lubricant may be fed to the glide bearing elements irrespective of the loading pressure.
