  • Patent number: 6253652
Abstract: In a web slitter of the type used for cutting continuous webs of material, such as paper, a top slitter assembly features a hub cylinder attached to its frame. The hub cylinder supports a freely rotating hub to which the top blade of the web slitter is mounted. The hub cylinder may be raised and lowered with respect to the slitter frame so that the top blade may be lowered to, and raised from, its cutting position. A toggle support is clamped to the hub cylinder while a pin holder is attached to the slitter frame. A toggle is attached to the toggle support in a pivoting fashion. Housed within the pin holder is a sliding pin and a compression spring. The compression spring resists the movement of the pin towards the hub of the web slitter. The pin may be extended so that it engages a notch in the hub. When the hub cylinder is raised, the toggle may be pivoted so that it abuts the end of the engaged pin against the action of the compression spring. As a result, the pin is maintained in engagement with the hub.

  • Patent number: 6251477
Abstract: Apparatus and method for coating a moving paper web, in which the web (2) to be coated is first guided to a coating station (7) correctly aligned and a first side of the web (2) is coated with a coat layer. Next, the web (2) is guided upwards from the coating station (7) and the first coat layer is dried using non-contact dryers (8, 9). From the dryers the web (2) is guided to the next coating station (14) correctly aligned, and the second side of the web (2) is coated with a coat layer, the web (2) is guided upwards from the coating station (14) and the coat layer on the second side of the web (2) is dried using non-contact dryers (8, 9). When the web is directed from the coating station (7) through the dryers (8, 9), it (2) is guided non-contactingly by means of air jets such that the web (2) is first non-contactingly turned in the machine direction during drying and next, similarly during drying, towards the level of the coating stations (7, 14).

  • Patent number: 6237525
Abstract: A method and apparatus for coating a paper or board web or the like (7) using a coating mix aerosol generated by means of an ultrasonic atomizer. The output power of a plurality of ultrasonic transducers (15) disposed proximate to a surface of the moving web (7) is passed via a vibrated beam (14) to a coating mix flow (2) flowing proximate to the web (5). Ultrasonic vibrations applied to the coating mix atomize the upper layer of the coating mix flow into an aerosol (11) which is emitted toward the web (7) and adheres thereto.

  • Patent number: 6235156
Abstract: In the method for paper web transfer in a paper machine or finishing apparatus for paper, a paper web (W) is transferred in a first machine portion (A) at a first travelling speed. In a second machine portion (B) following the first one in the travel direction of the web, the tail is transferred at a travelling speed lower than the first travelling speed. In the second machine portion (B) the tail (TB) is transferred independently without a draw connection to the web (W, TA) transferred in the first machine portion (A), the travelling speed of the tail (TA) transferred in the second machine portion (B) is increased, and a draw connection is established between the tail and the web (W, TA) transferred in the first machine portion.

  • Patent number: 6231722
Abstract: A method and system for monitoring a separation process of a web in a paper machine in which the web is separated from a roll and passed into a free draw, which is preferably the first free draw of the web in the paper machine. A separation point of the web from the roll and a difference in speed of the web across the separation point, i.e., the draw difference, are measured. Cause-to-effect ratios in the separation process are established, e.g., in a data collecting system or analysis system, based on the measurements of the separation point and the speed difference. At least one additional process or running parameter of the paper machine is measured and the measurements of the separation point and the speed difference are compared with the additional process or running parameter(s) to thereby determine the manner in which the separation process of the web is affected by the additional process or running parameter(s).

  • Patent number: 6210529
Abstract: Method for regulating the surface level and the consistency in a stock chest for metering of a component stock. Stock is fed as an outward flow out of the bottom portion of a storage tower by a first pump into the stock chest. Into this outward flow, a first dilution water flow is passed in order to regulate the consistency of the stock fed into the stock chest to a—desired level. The stock is fed as a metering flow from the stock chest by a second pump into the short circulation of the paper or board machine. The surface level in the stock chest is maintained constant by an overflow passed from the stock chest (20) into a pumping tank. From the pumping tank, stock is fed as a return flow by a third pump into the bottom portion of the storage tower. A second dilution water flow is passed into this return flow to thereby regulate the consistency in the bottom portion of the storage tower to a desired level.

  • Patent number: 6200424
Abstract: An arrangement and method for calendering a board web including a calender providing a hot and hard calendering nip formed by two calender rolls and through which the board web passes. At least one of the calender rolls is arranged to be heated to such a temperature that the surface layer of the board web placed at the side of this roll reaches its vitrification temperature in the calendering nip. A film press is arranged directly before the calendering nip in the direction of transfer of the board web and includes a film press nip through which the board web is passed. The film press nip is arranged to transfer a liquid layer onto the face of the board web so as to moisten the board web. The board web is transferred from the film press nip into the calendering nip while the surface layer of the web is at the moisture level determined by the film press in view of producing a controlled moisture gradient.

  • Patent number: 6193840
Abstract: A method for producing surface-treated paper, in particular of fine paper, and a dry end of a paper machine that makes use of the method. A paper web that has been dewatered by pressing is dried in the forward dryer section, in which drying energy is applied to the paper web over the entire length of the forward dryer section asymmetrically in the z-direction from the side of the bottom face of the web. This step is carried out by a number of successive groups with single-wire draw that are open downward. In this manner, shrinkage of the web both in the machine direction and in the cross direction is reduced or at least partially prevented, which shrinkage tends to take place when the dry solids content becomes higher. Paper broke is removed from underneath the drying groups that are open downward substantially by the force of gravity onto the broke conveyor placed underneath.
