Publication number: 20240361925Abstract: A data storage device has a controller, a decryption engine, and a memory storing encrypted data. Instead of using the decryption engine to generate a tweak value needed to decrypt the encrypted data, the tweak value is generated by the controller while the controller is waiting for the encrypted data to be read from the memory. This hides the latency to compute the tweak value in the latency to read the encrypted data from the memory.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 19, 2023Publication date: October 31, 2024Applicant: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Mark Branstad, Martin Lueker-Boden, Lunkai Zhang

Publication number: 20240354256Abstract: A Controller Memory Buffer (CMB) caching mechanism can be used for increased CMB performance. Rather than reading data and writing data from the static random access memory (SRAM), data is read from the SRAM. When data is read from the CMB in SRAM there is increase performance, but little space to process both read and write commands. Using a dynamic random access memory (DRAM) for write commands and CMB in SRAM for read commands allows for increased performance. Due to limited space in the SRAM, when the read commands are read from the host, the commands are deleted. This allows for relevant data stored in the SRAM to be used for the next command, but then deleted for the next command to be processed. The increase in performance is allowed, while not using extra SRAM or DRAM.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2023Publication date: October 24, 2024Applicant: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Stephen GOLD, Judah Gamliel HAHN, Shay BENISTY

Publication number: 20240355353Abstract: The present disclosure generally relates to a magnetic recording head for magnetic media, such as a magnetic media drive. The head has a main pole, trailing shield, leading shield, first side shield, and second side shield. One side shield is electrically connected to the trailing shield and electrically disconnected from the leading shield. The other side shield is electrically connected to the leading shield and electrically disconnected from the trailing shield. The side shields are electrically connected through a hot seed layer and/or a nonmagnetic electrically conductive layer that is electrically disconnected from the main pole. Such an arrangement results in a current path from the trailing shield, through the side shields, around the main pole, and to the leading shield, which results in reduced resistance.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 19, 2023Publication date: October 24, 2024Applicant: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Muhammad ASIF BASHIR, Alexander GONCHAROV, Daniel BAI, Yunfei DING

Publication number: 20240354007Abstract: A storage device performs error handling using asymmetric blocks in a memory device. The memory may be divided into blocks of varying sizes. A controller on the storage device may process instructions by writing data to a first block on the memory device. If the controller determines an error occurred with a write operation to the first block and if the controller is unable to find a second block that is the same size as the first block, the controller may replace the first block with a second block that is larger than the first block. The controller may mark the second block and continue with the write operation.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2023Publication date: October 24, 2024Applicant: WESTERN DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES, INC.Inventors: Raghavendra Gopalakrishnan, Disha Gundecha

Publication number: 20240354017Abstract: Rather than storing multiple video files in a jumbo block (JB), the video file is stored in one or more complete JBs while the remaining data of the video file that does not fill a complete JB is stored in a tail block (TB). Generally, data sets are not mixed within a JB, but rather, the extra, excess, or tail data is stored in the TB. Multiple video file extra, excess, or tail data can be stored in a common TB. Stated another way, a TB is able to hold multiple video file tails from multiple video files. The use of the TB decreases garbage collection (GC) of jumbo blocks.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2023Publication date: October 24, 2024Applicant: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Muralitharan JAYARAMAN, Rampraveen SOMASUNDARAM, Sundar Panneer SELVAM, Durga Praveen MADDINENI, Daniel J. Publication number: 20240337282Abstract: A rapid installation screw includes radially expanding threads. The screw may include a number of discrete thread segments removably affixed to a distal end of an internal shaft. Initially, the thread segments may together have an outer diameter that allows them to slide into a screw hole without engaging threads of the screw hole. Thereafter, a further downward force on the screw will disconnect the thread segments from the internal shaft so that the internal shaft can move axially down between the thread segments. The diameter of the internal shaft forces the thread segments radially outward into engagement with the threads of the screw hole. The internal shaft further includes ribs radially oriented around the internal shaft to fit in between the thread segments. Rotation of the screw head and internal shaft will exert torque on the thread segments, causing them to rotate as well, thus allowing the thread segments to unscrew from the threaded hole.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 17, 2023Publication date: October 10, 2024Applicant: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Gadi Vishne
