  • Patent number: 4031621
Abstract: A hand tool, such as a pruner, has two pivotally movable members which are biassed open by a spring. A catch, for locking the tool in the closed position, is fitted into a non-circular aperture in a part of one of the members which overlaps the other member, the shank of the catch being undercut to allow the catch to rotate in the aperture, but prevent its withdrawal from the aperture except in the rotational position in which it was inserted into the aperture. A detent is provided, for rotation by the catch to engage and lock the members together. The member containing the catch is so shaped that the detent can be fitted to or withdrawn from the catch only in a position in which the shank of the catch is locked in the member. Consequently, so long as the detent remains in position in the catch, the catch cannot be removed.

  • Patent number: 4012128
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for testing temporal resolution of vision in a human subject are disclosed in which a light source is repetitively energized to produce pairs of visual stimuli, and the time interval between two stimuli in each pair is varied so as to enable the assessment of the minimum interval for which the subject under test can discern the separate stimuli in the pair. Means are provided for fixating the center of the subject's visual field, and the position of the visual stimuli within the visual field is varied so as to enable a map to be drawn showing the variation of the subject's temporal resolution over his visual field. Temporal resolution measured in this way enables certain diseases to be diagnosed and distinguished.

  • Patent number: 4000836
Abstract: This invention relates to pressurized dispensers such as aerosol containers. The invention provides such dispensers containing a reservoir of an organic substance which dissolves at least 15% of its own weight of propellant at room temperature, the reservoir being capable of releasing the dissolved propellant on dispensing the contents of the container. The organic substance is an extended rubber. Various organic substances can be used to extend the rubber, and various rubbers can be extended. The extenders are generally less expensive than the unextended rubbers, and the extended rubbers can often dissolve as much, or in some cases more propellant than the same weight of unextended rubber. This provides a cost advantage over unextended rubbers. The reservoirs enable the head-space pressure in the dispenser to be maintained substantially constant throughout dispenser life, and foams, for example, of substantially constant density to be obtained.

  • Patent number: 3972115
Abstract: The invention provides a safety razor comprising a handle, a guard bar adapted to receive a razor blade thereon, and a top cap linked to the guard bar and manually movable into a position in which a razor blade can be trapped between the top cap and the guard bar. A catch secures the top cap on the guard bar, the said catch having a first component on the top cap and a second component which engages with the handle, the first and second components being brought into engagement when the top cap is in the aforesaid position, the handle being movable relative to the guard bar to move the top cap relative to the guard bar for applying a clamping action to a razor blade located therebetween.

  • Patent number: 3972446
Abstract: The present invention provides pressurized dispensers comprising a container provided with a valve-controlled outlet and containing a concentrate and a reservoir holding propellant. The reservoir comprises a crystalline organic polymer which is capable of holding propellant therein in such a way that the vapor pressure over the held propellant is reduced below that over the pure propellant, the polymer being capable of holding at least 15% of its own weight of propellant at room temperature, and the reservoir being capable of releasing propellant within the container as the contents of the container are dispensed.

  • Patent number: 3943043
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for the selective dissolution of a predetermined metal from, for example, a metal-metal combination. The metal or the metal-metal combination is made the working electrode of an electrolytic cell whose other electrode is electrolytically inert in the cell in use. The working electrode is held at a substantially constant electrical potential relative to a standard calomel electrode, and this potential and the pH of the electrolyte are selected such that the electrical energy passing through the cell during a selected time period is dependent on the amount of the predetermined metal electrolytically dissolved and substantially independent of any other metal which may be present.
