Abstract: By varying corona producing element height/projection, a more uniform charge potential is achieved. Elements, such as pins or teeth, are shorter at the edges of an element array and grow longer as one moves toward the center of the array. Such variation in height/projection overcomes shielding from adjacent teeth, as well as other effects, to yield the more uniform charging potential.

Abstract: A simplified system for sensing the movement and/or position on both axes of a moving surface, such as a photoreceptor belt of a xerographic printer, or a sheet transport of an ink jet printer, utilizing a linear track of small and closely spaced “Z” shaped marks on or in a moving belt or roller surface. These marks are used to accurately incrementally directly detect surface motions in both orthogonal axes with a co-linear optical sensor linear array of a multiplicity of individual pixel optical detectors which respectively detect and compare the changes in positions relative thereto of the transverse and angled lines of those Z marks during frequent short measurement intervals. This exemplary system provides direct, and thus more accurate, surface movement measurement information, with much less critical and less costly marking requirements, and greater tolerance for variations in the subject surface, as compared to indirect or conventional encoder type positional sensors.

Abstract: A holographic recording and/or retrieval method and apparatus are provided. An optical recording medium is used which has a recording layer, formed on a surface of a transparent substrate, through which light having an incident angle of a predetermined value or more with respect to the surface is guided, and which changes a refractive index or absorption coefficient upon simultaneous irradiation of signal light of a predetermined wavelength and reference light, and can record holograms by holding the changed refractive index or absorption coefficient. During recording, a hologram is recorded by simultaneously irradiating the recording layer with signal light of predetermined wavelength and reference light. During retrieval, reading light of wavelength that does not change a refractive index or absorption coefficient of the recording layer is guided through the recording layer, and a hologram is retrieved by diffracted light produced when the reading light is guided through the recording layer.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a computer system for enhanced part-of-speech (POS-) tagging as well as grammatically disambiguating a phrase. A phrase is usually a short multiword expression that may be ambiguous. By introducing grammatical constraints the invention supports POS-tagging as well as grammatically disambiguating the phrase. According to an identifier for the phrase, the phrase is supplemented with artificial context information. The supplemented phrase is then POS-tagged or grammatically disambiguated. Important applications are POS-tagging, Automatic Term Encoding, Headword Detection and Information Retrieval.
Abstract: Substrates are received by a compiling mechanism and compiled into sets. Incoming sheets are tamped by a tamping system into position on the compiling platform to register the sheets. The compiler platform mechanism includes two narrow, low-friction panels that are driven in opposite directions. The compiled and registered sheets sets can be manipulated by a manipulation device, to be stapled, punched, stitched, etc. The compiled, manipulated and registered sheet sets can be dropped onto an output catch platform located below the compilation platform. The compiling platform includes two retractable panels that slide open to allow the compiled set to drop to the output catch platform below. Once the set is dropped, the compiling platform panels are driven back to their original position in order to receive another set. Alternatively, the compiled and registered sets can be ejected from the compiling platform to a subsequent, downstream device.

Abstract: A display and record medium includes a digital information record section, which is implemented as an IC memory and can record record information in noncontact, and an information display section implemented as a liquid crystal display medium of light write type into which display information can be written. A digital information rewrite section of an information writer communicates with the digital information record section of the display and record medium by electromagnetic waves to rewrite record information as required. A display information rewrite section of the information writer irradiates an optical pattern to the information display section of the display and record medium to rewrite display information. It is possible to rewrite both digital information and display information concurrently in noncontact.

Abstract: A system and method in accordance with an embodiment of the invention addresses the problems of unlinked or sparsely linked documents by linking them using a set of automatically extracted content words, the “index terms.” Upon receiving a list of documents for indexing, the system and method in accordance with an embodiment of the invention automatically selects the terms to be indexed and generates a hypertext concordance (an “HC”). A concordance is an index where each of the indexed terms is listed with surrounding text, i.e., in context. As well, each of the indexed terms in the HC is given a hyperlink, instead of a page number, back to the occurrence of the term in a version of the indexed document. In one embodiment of the invention, the original document that has been indexed is also revised to include hyperlinks from the index terms into the HC.
