Abstract: A drum maintenance unit (drum maintenance unit) to reduce build up of electrostatic charge within a printer device. The drum maintenance unit may have a static shield positioned to reduce the build up of an electrostatic charge and to act as a physical barrier by preventing discarded oil from becoming airborne and returning to the oiling roller unfiltered. The static shield may also be utilized to retain and house the filtration system of the drum maintenance unit thus reducing part count and manufacturing time.

Abstract: A latching mechanism is provided on a Drum Maintenance Unit (drum maintenance unit). The latching mechanism releasably secures the drum maintenance unit to a media device when installed in the media device and provides an electrical connection. The latching mechanism contacts with a locking tab and a data connection that may be located on a receiving portion of the media device. This arrangement allows the latching mechanism to simultaneously latch and connect with a receiving portion of the media device. The latching device of the connection device may be provided to releasably lock with the media device until a predetermined amount of force is applied.

Abstract: A process for producing a polymer optical waveguide including: 1) preparing a rubber mold having a composite layer structure in which a rubber layer which has a concave portion corresponding to an optical waveguide core and contains a rubber mold-forming curable resin is buried in a rubber layer-forming concave portion of a rigid substrate having the rubber layer-forming concave portion; 2) bringing a cladding substrate into close contact with the rubber mold; 3) filling the concave portion of the rubber mold, with which the cladding substrate has been brought into close contact, with a core-forming curable resin; 4) curing the filled core-forming curable resin; 5) removing the rubber mold from the cladding substrate; and 6) forming a cladding layer on the cladding substrate on which the core has been formed.

Abstract: Methods and systems used to automatically identify the marking process used for an image on a substrate based on spatial characteristics and/or color of the image. Image types which are classified and identified include continuous tone images and halftone images. Among halftone images separately identified are inkjet images, xerographic images and lithographic images. Locally adaptive image threshold techniques may be used to determine the spatial characteristics of the image.

Abstract: An internal filter includes a lower substrate and an upper substrate. Fluid passages are formed by etching grooves into the surface(s) of the upper and/or lower substrates, and/or in one or more intermediate layers. The filter pores extending between the fluid passages are formed by etching second grooves that fluidly connect the fluid passages. Two or more sets of the one or two intermediate layers can be implemented to provide additional filter passages and/or pores. Each set can be connected to a separate fluid source and/or a separate microfluidic device. In another internal filter, the inlet and outlet passages and the filter pores are formed on the same upper or lower substrate. The inlet and outlet passages are partially formed in a first step. In a second step, the inlet and outlet passages are completed at the same time that the filter pores are formed.

Abstract: A method for testing a language learner's ability to create semantically coherent grammatical text in a language, comprising generating text having at least one active region and inactive regions; displaying the text in a graphical user interface on a display unit, wherein at least one active region comprises a key word or phrase; identifying at least one active region in the graphical user interface; selecting at least one active region to display a menu of linguistic choices comprised of at least one grammatically correct linguistic choice and at least one grammatically incorrect linguistic choice; selecting one of the linguistic choices; and displaying an error message when at least one grammatically incorrect linguistic choice is selected.

Abstract: A text passage is analyzed to determine whether it contains a “be” verb or a “have” verb. If so, syntactic dependencies are obtained from the text passage, a direct object relation involving the “be” verb or “have” verb is obtained, and a verbal form of a noun appearing in the first direct object relation is obtained. The syntactic dependencies are rewritten based on the verbal form of the noun. Different syntactic rewriting criteria are applied if the text passage also contains a noun object preceding a past participle verb, or also contains an active present participle verb.

Abstract: In a system and method for streak detection in a fixed imaging array digital scanning system, redundant information regarding individual lines of a scanned image collected by multiple discrete rows or sets of scanning sensors in the imaging array are compared. Stationary obstructions in the field of view of the imaging array are detected through this comparison which would otherwise appear repeatedly reproduced as streaks or lines in the reproduced output image.

Abstract: A device and method for the alignment, in upto six degrees of freedom, of printheads in a printer is disclosed. The device has a support, wherein the printhead is secured to a substantially center location of the support. The device further has a fixed plate biased against the support by a plurality of first screws extending substantially in a Z direction, a plurality of second screws extending substantially in a Y direction, and a third screw extending substantially in an X direction. The fixed plate, and thus the print head, may be translated in each of the X, Y and Z directions and may be rotated about each of the X, Y, and Z axes by manipulation of the screws to achieve possible alignment in all six degrees of freedom.

Abstract: Systems and methods for indexing and searching the inner structure of a string over a language having a vocabulary and a grammar using bit vectors. The index preserves the inner grammatical structure of the string while allowing for a fast search. A single search provides immediate access to every level of a document, without having ato re-search a single string to determine which sub-parts of that string match the search string. When a string is indexed, the index maintains a compositional representation and the grammatical relationship between the elements of the vocabulary according to the language. The string is then indexed on different levels by disregarding some of the grammatical relationships of component levels.
