Abstract: The recognition apparatus shoots pictures at least a portion of a subject including a human face and obtains a sequence of image data. The facial portion is recognized from the image data. Each image data in the sequence of image data is processed successively. From the image data, an image region including the facial portion is identified. Either a color of the subject within a region defined based on the identified image region or the result of detection of moving regions is used for processing for identifying the image region including the facial portion.
Abstract: Context-based contact information retrieval systems and methods that automatically extract contact information from a user's context, allow a user to capture, reuse and share personal and organizational contacts in the form of a business card or an audio/video recording, as desired. In various embodiments, contacts are retrieved based on the user's context and are presented in a manner that does not disrupt the user's current task. In various embodiments, the user accesses the details of the contacts with a single interaction. In various embodiments, the systems and methods monitor the user's current context and check for matches. The systems and methods then assign a score to each match and unobtrusively present at least some of the matches to the user based on the assigned score.

Abstract: A service retrieval apparatus has a service information database which stores service information including a type of service provided by a server and positional information, and a service retrieval apparatus database which stores information including installation positions of other service retrieval apparatuses. A service retrieval unit generates retrieval conditions to execute service retrieval in response to a service retrieval request from a client. When it is judged by a retrieval result judgment unit that a result of the retrieval by the service retrieval unit does not satisfy judgment criteria set in advance, a retrieval range setting unit changes a retrieval range included in the retrieval conditions so as to be wider or narrower. The service retrieval unit performs service retrieval again with respect to the change retrieval range and obtains a retrieval result with which a user is satisfied.
Abstract: The present invention provides an image display medium comprising a pair of substrates facing each other; and a particle group comprising two or more types of particles sealed in a space between the substrates, at least one of the two or more types of particles being positively chargeable by an external stimulus and at least one other of the two or more types of particles being negatively chargeable by an external stimulus, and the positively chargeable and negatively chargeable particles having, respectively, colors different from each other, wherein the positively chargeable and negatively chargeable particles have particle size distributions satisfying 0.4<Ds/Dl<0.9. Ds represents the particle size distribution of at least one type of particles charged with one polarity and Dl represents that of at least one other type of particles charged with the other polarity.
Abstract: A fuser for an electrophotographic printer or copier has a fuser roll and pressure roll that form a nip through which a recording paper having a toner image is passed to fuse the toner image thereon. The fuser includes a cleaning web system to clean the fuser roll having a web supply roll, a tension roll to press the web against the fuser roll, and a web take up roll. To prevent spooling of the web from the supply roll during a paper jam clearance while the pressure roll is in contact with the fuser roll, a torsion spring is mounted on the tension roll shaft. The torsion spring provides enough torsional force on the tension roll to prevent rotation thereof during a jam clearance, thus preventing web spooling. During normal operation, the take up roll intermittently overcomes the torsion spring to step the web thereon.

Abstract: In a xerographic development apparatus using a magnetic brush formed from magnetic carrier particles, a magnetic strip disposed downstream of the development zone along the direction of motion of the photoreceptor retains a separate, small brush of carrier particles near the photoreceptor. The brush acts as a barrier separating a flow of “dirty” air (laden with airborne toner particles) upstream of the strip, and a flow of clean air downstream of the strip.

Abstract: An image display medium comprises a display substrate on which an image is displayed and a non-displaying substrate opposing to the substrate, wherein a spacer and black particles and white particles are enclosed between these substrates. The display substrate and non-display substrate each have a transparent electrode, wherein the transparent electrode for the non-display substrate is grounded and the transparent electrode for the display substrate is connected to voltage applying means. As these black particles and white particles, particles for a display device having a weight reduction rate of not more than 0.3% at 100° C. to 240° C. are respectively used.

Abstract: An ink stick for use in a solid ink feed system of a phase change ink jet printer includes a three dimensional ink stick body that has a top, a bottom, and a perimeter. At least a portion of the perimeter forms the shape of a visually recognizable symbol, such as an alphanumeric character.
Abstract: An index-guided buried heterostructure AlGalnN laser diode provides improved mode stability and low threshold current when compared to conventional ridge waveguide structures. A short period superlattice is used to allow adequate cladding layer thickness for confinement without cracking. The intensity of the light lost due to leakage is reduced by about 2 orders of magnitude with an accompanying improvement in the far-field radiation pattern when compared to conventional structures.

Abstract: An optical switching device including a substrate and at least an organic film as a light control part formed on the substrate. Optical switching is performed by applying signal light and control light to the organic film, the wavelengths of the signal light and the control light being set in a region in the vicinity of resonance on the longer wavelength side in the absorption spectrum of the organic film; and by changing a real part or real and imaginary parts of the refractive index of the light control part by using the control light, to thereby cause a phase difference in the signal light.
