  • Patent number: 6644652
Abstract: In a printing apparatus capable of producing duplex, or two-sided, prints, print sheets which have received a first-side image move to an inverter and a duplex loop which re-feeds the sheet to receive the second-side image. The sheets move through the duplex loop at different speed than through the main path where images are placed. A control system controls the time in which a change in speed of a sheet in the duplex loop is initiated. The control system takes into account a desired amount of buckle experienced by the sheet, which is useful in de-skewing the sheet before receiving an image.

  • Patent number: 6646762
Abstract: A color printing process, printing a color image in which out-of-gamut original colors are present. For each pixel defined by an original color which is determined to be out of gamut, a gamut remapping process is applied to map each pixel to a color which is within a printer gamut, remapping said pixels to colors within an output printer gamut. For a given set of gamut remapped pixels, gamut remapped pixel colors are compared with said original pixel colors, to derive a comparison metric. Using the comparison metric, a corrected set of gamut remapped colors is generated. The comparison metric may be subjected to an adaptive filtering process, which strengthens the comparison metric in high frequency image regions to increase its impact on the gamut remapped colors, and weakens the comparison metric in low frequency areas, to weaken its impact on the gamut remapped colors.

  • Patent number: 6646710
Abstract: A bright, and contrasty reflective display can be performed without using polarizer films, and display switching can be performed fast. A ferroelectric liquid crystal is sandwiched between substrates, and electrodes are formed face to face with each other in a direction parallel to the substrates. The ferroelectric liquid crystal, when no electric field is applied to it, goes into a planer state in which a helical axis becomes perpendicular to or almost perpendicular to the substrates, selectively reflecting light of specific wavelengths in a visible region. A driving circuit applies an electric field between the electrodes in a direction perpendicular to or almost perpendicular to the helical axis of the ferroelectric liquid crystal in the planer state.

  • Patent number: 6647533
Abstract: A computer-implemented incremental algorithm for updating globally optimized linebreaks for a paragraph following a change to that paragraph takes advantage of the fact that in many cases, the effect of a change on a paragraph is of only limited extent in the paragraph. As a result, in many cases, previously evaluated information concerning feasible breakpoints for the original paragraph can be used to obtain the optimal break for the changed paragraph. The computer-implemented incremental algorithm models the paragraph as an acyclic graph and identifies those portions of the graph that are unchanged as a result of the revision. The method then evaluates feasible breakpoints and combined these with feasible breakpoints obtained from the original paragraph. Using these breakpoints, the incremental algorithm uses dynamic programming to obtain the optimal break for the changed paragraph.

  • Patent number: 6647222
Abstract: A digital printer retains in memory detailed alphanumeric data describing the contents of its paper trays, as well as describing any unusual features thereof. The alphanumeric data is entered at the local user interface of the printer, and is retained at the printer so it can be accessed by a remote user computer as needed. The alphanumeric data can be subject to search techniques by which a large number of printers can be searched for certain print media or other properties.

Abstract: A micro-electromechanical system assembly is designed to integrate a laser. More particularly, laser is a vertical cavity surface-emitting laser. The MEMS assembly includes a micro-electromechanical substrate having an upper surface and a lower surface, the upper surface defined as having a first area and a second area. A first substrate bonding pad is positioned on the upper surface at a location within the first area, and a second substrate bonding pad is positioned on the upper surface at a location within the second area. Deposited upon the first and second substrate bonding areas are respective first and second solder material. A laser to be integrated in the MEMS assembly has a first laser bonding pad located on a first side, and a second laser bonding pad located on a second side. The laser is placed between the first substrate bonding pad and second substrate bonding pad such that they align with the respective first and second laser bonding pads.

  • Patent number: 6647535
Abstract: Systems and methods to enable real-time and near real-time storyboarding on the World Wide Web in addition to a graphical user interface for video parsing and browsing the of the storyboard. Specifically, storyboarding can be accomplished on the World Wide Web by parsing an input video into representative or key frames. These frames then can be posted to a web document, or the like, for subsequent viewing by a user. This allows a video to be distilled down to the essential frames thus eliminating storage and bandwidth problems as well as eliminating the need for a user to view the entirety of the video. Furthermore, the graphical user interface allows a user to visually interact with an input video signal to determine the key or representative frames, or to retrieve video segments associated with already determined key frames.

  • Patent number: 6644791
Abstract: A printhead for use in an ink jet printing device includes a nozzle plate which defines a plurality of droplet-emitting nozzles and a printhead housing bonded to the nozzle plate. A heater substrate is attached and oriented substantially perpendicular to the nozzle plate. An intermediate layer, along with a channel cap plate are attached to the heater substrate and define a plurality of ink channels in fluid communication with the nozzles. The printhead housing includes an internal wall, which defines an ink flow path around the heater substrate such that heat is transferred progressively and conductively to the flowing ink, thereby removing heat from the heater substrate and cooling the entire printhead. The printhead housing includes an air bubble accumulation chamber adjacent the top portion of the printhead housing to capture air bubble emitted due to the heating of the ink.

  • Patent number: 6644774
Abstract: A thermal ink jet printhead for a printer has a temperature sensor attached thereto for monitoring the operating temperature thereof. A maximum printhead operating temperature is stored in a memory of the printer's control circuitry and, if the printhead temperature sensed by the temperature sensor during a printing operation exceeds the maximum operating temperature stored is the memory, a signal is generated indicating that the printhead has stopped ejecting ink droplets and must be checked for depriming or a depleted ink supply.
