  • Patent number: 6654143
Abstract: A method of adjusting an image production system to account for a variable property of a desired output medium includes storing a reference characterization of at least one measured value associated with a reference output medium. An output value, adjusted for the variable property of the desired output medium, is determined based on data including the reference characterization of the reference output medium, for example stored in color lookup tables, color rendering dictionaries, or the like. Based on the adjusted output value determined, the desired output medium is then printed or otherwise marked using the output value.

  • Patent number: 6654044
Abstract: Rotation of a polygon serves to generate a scanning laser beam in a scanning beam generating unit. The polygon is fixed on the drive shaft of a motor drive. The motor drive is located at a position spaced apart from a base frame. The base frame is designed to interrupt heat radiated toward the motor drive. As compared with the case where a motor drive is mounted directly upon a base frame, the motor drive is prevented from receiving heat through the base frame. It is possible to avoid an increase in the temperature of the motor drive to the utmost. In particular, rise in temperature can be prevented in the bearing supporting the drive shaft in the motor drive, so that a deterioration can be avoided in the bearing. At the same time, a deficiency in rotation, such as a jitter, can reliably be avoided in the motor drive.

  • Patent number: 6652910
Abstract: An apparatus, to be used when an open end of a hollow substrate contacts a coating solution to define a solution free interior portion of the substrate, for controlling the level of the coating solution relative to the substrate interior, the apparatus including: a gas container capable of changing in volume; a channel connecting the gas container to the solution free interior portion of the substrate to allow gas flow in either direction between the gas container and the solution free interior portion; and pressure means for exerting a changeable, continuous pressure on the gas container that automatically exerts an increasingly greater pressure on the gas container as the gas container expands in volume and that automatically exerts a decreasingly lesser pressure on the gas container as the gas container decreases in volume.

  • Patent number: 6654743
Abstract: A method and apparatus for clustering documents from a set of documents includes issuing a request from an electronic device for documents which are relevant to the request. The documents believed to meet the request requirements are identified and the documents are thereafter supplied to a document clustering system. The document clustering system forms clusters of the documents by operation of the clustering system. A robustness criterion, by analogy with self-assembled physical systems, is applied to select the best, most robust, clustering. Robust clusters have a higher designability feature than other clusters which are generated where designability refers to a number of ways a particular cluster can be formed.

  • Patent number: 6654586
Abstract: In a document feeder with a superposed sheet input tray and sheet output stacking tray for feeding and then restacking print media paper sheets of variable dimensions, the lateral setting (repositioning) of the at least one variable position side guide of the input tray to the sides of the input sheets automatically correspondingly resets the corresponding side guide of the underlying output stacking tray, to reduce sheet scattering in the sheet stacking, especially skewed sheets. This may be accomplished by a simple direct mechanical integration of these respective side guides into a single repositionable component with upper and lower extending sheet edge guide portions.

  • Publication number: 20030217261
Abstract: An mail processing apparatus for confirming contents of encrypt mail. Electronic mail delivered in MTA is received by a receiving section. When the received electronic mail has been encrypted or an electronic signature has been affixed, signature verification and decoding are performed by an electronic signature verification/decoding section. The contents of the mail in which the signature verification and the decoding are performed are confirmed by a content confirmation section. Subsequent to this, a signature and encryption are properly performed with respect to the mail by an electronic signature/encryption section. Mail of an account destination of a mail server is held in a spool. The spooled mail is taken out using a delivery part by a mail user agent device. Mail of an account destination of another mail server is delivered to another mail server destination through the delivery section.

  • Publication number: 20030215245
Abstract: The present invention relates to utilizing memory provided in a machine replaceable sub-assembly to be a medium of distribution for software code updates to that machine relating as to how that machine should operate. In one alternative, there is provided a method for operating a machine comprising the steps of providing a replaceable sub-assembly separable from the machine, the replaceable sub-assembly further comprising a wireless interface and a memory in which is stored software code of executable instructions. The method further provides communicating via the wireless interface with the replaceable subassembly to store software code of executable instructions relating to the operation of the machine into the memory. The method then provides placing the replaceable sub-assembly into the machine, reading the memory, placing the stored software code of executable instructions into the machine as new machine software code, and then operating the machine in accordance with the new software code.
