Abstract: This invention provides a functional peptide fiber which comprises a plurality of peptide structure units each containing at least one peptide chain, wherein peptide chains contained in each adjacent peptide structure units do not form peptide bond but are structured into a fibrous form by taking a &bgr;-sheet structure, and wherein at least one of the plurality of peptide structure units contains a peptide chain having a functional material connected thereto. Also disclosed are a method for producing the functional peptide fiber and a method for recovering peptide chains from the functional peptide fiber.
Abstract: An endless seamed flexible belt comprising a first end and a second end which join together to form a seam, the seam having an adhesive with an oxidized charge transport molecule, a charge transport molecule, or mixtures thereof.
Abstract: A self-adaptive sheet feeding roll for reliably feeding, within a sheet feeding apparatus, sheets of various and different sheet weights along a sheet path. The self-adaptive sheet feeding roll includes (a) a cylindrical core having a longitudinal axis and an outer surface; (b) a compliant surface layer formed over the outer surface of the cylindrical core and having an external surface and a given layer thickness; and (c) a series of spaced apart, non-radial slots formed from the external surface into the compliant surface layer and defining a series of spaced apart blade portions within the compliant surface layer for adaptively compressing and deforming against, and responsively to, sheets of various and different sheet weights, thereby self-adjusting a normal force Fn as well as a sheet driving force Fd thereof and enabling reliable feeding, within a sheet feeding apparatus, of such sheets of various and different sheet weights.
Abstract: A coating head assembly incorporates a replaceable breakaway link into the coating head assembly. In the event of a collision, this link will break to reduce the likelihood of breakage of any other part of the coating head assembly. Repair then only requires that the link be replaced, rather than the coating head assembly be rebuilt. This invention reduces the coating head repair time from a fifteen-hour job of rebuilding the coating head assembly to a three-hour job of tooling a new link.
Abstract: A hetero-junction semiconductor device is used as a diode in which a compound semiconductor layer at least contains one or more elements selected from group IIIA elements and one or more elements selected from group VA elements. The compound semiconductor layer is laminated on a surface of a heterogeneous semiconductor having a different conduction type from that of the compound semiconductor.
Abstract: A method of recycling a molded resin consisting mainly of a thermoplastic resin which comprises adding as a recycle aid agent a rubber-like material (material) which is compatible with the thermoplastic resin as the main component of the molded resin, is moldable after having been mixed with the resin, and has the property of improving impact strength. By this method, impact strength and flame retardancy are recovered or improved.
Abstract: A system and method for controlling a xerographic printer includes a subsystem for carrying out a function of the xerographic printer and affecting an electric field of a component. The system and method further include a bias transfer roll voltage operated in a constant current mode, and a voltage evaluator coupled to the biased transfer roll for measuring a change in a level of voltage of the bias transfer roll as the component affected by the subsystem passes through a nip region near the bias transfer roll for determining operability of the subsystem.

Abstract: A method for compressing digital image data to improve the efficiency of serial data transmission is disclosed. More specifically, the present invention accomplishes image compression by performing the most complex portions of a standard compression technique on a subset of the originally provided data utilizing a modified two-dimensional discrete cosine transform. The invention includes a fast JPEG compressor using a Haar transform with a conditional transform.
Abstract: This invention relates to the packaging and subsequent removal of material that tends to clump or congeal when shipped or stored in containers. A mechanism and process for agitating material held in a container is disclosed. The agitating mechanism includes a device such as a spring for storing potential energy in a locked down position. When desired, the potential energy is released, and an agitating member moves through the materials to break apart clumps or congealed materials in order to aid flow rates and uniformity. One embodiment of the present invention relates to cartridges for storing marking materials for reprographic systems.
Abstract: As the individual pages of a book having a gutter and outside edge margins and being held at least partially open are being automatically sequentially turned over, in coordination therewith a flattening force is applied to the unimaged gutter margin areas of the book for flattening the pages after they have been at least substantially turned over, and unimaged outside edge margins of the book are clamped by automatic clamping members in coordination therewith, for appropriate page viewing and/or imaging. The flattening force may be applied with a V shaped reciprocally movable member, which may also be partially self-centering in the book gutter, and may also open to push outwardly on the then-open pages, as applied.

Abstract: A removable memory media, such as a compact disk, has an alterable alphanumeric display thereon. The display comprises an array of elements, such as bichromal balls, which can be selectably altered in appearance. A head associated with a port for accepting the disk creates images in the display when the disk is ejected from the port, thus allowing the disk to be automatically labeled incidental to use.

Abstract: A feed apparatus which combines a slider crank feed head drive system and cam actuated stack height sensing system to form a new combined shuttle feeder. The new feed head drive includes the replacement of a solenoid driven feed head with a more reliable stepper driven twin slider crank drive. Included in the slider crank drive for the feed head is an integral cam as part of the crank arm mounted to the motor shaft. This cam is designed drives a stack height sensor to drop and lift the stack height sensing arm to sense stack height after the sheet trail edge has passed the point of arm contact with the stack. The cam also provides a “service mode” position for the stack height arm which lifts it out of the way of the paper supply when it is opening. The cam dwells in a neutral home position during the rest of the drive out and return motion of the feed head.
