  • Patent number: 6785242
Abstract: A monitoring apparatus and method are provided for a communication system in which a central office communicates to at least one end unit using intermediate remote nodes. The remote node receives signals from both the central office and the end units. Each remote node can be equipped with apparatus for monitoring the integrity of paths of the communication system. The monitoring apparatus can include a mixing device that mixes received signals to produce combined signals. The received signals generally include a pilot signal sent from the central office and a data signal sent from the at least one end unit. The state of the communication system is analyzed based on the combined signals. If the combined signals includes only the data signal from the end unit, the path through which the pilot signal was sent is inoperative. If the combined signals includes only the pilot signal, the transmission path from the end unit over which the data signal is sent is inoperative.

  • Patent number: 6781954
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for signal monitoring of messages in a telecommunications network having a plurality of switches and network elements therein alleviate the need for external hardware to be hooked up to nodes of the network to determine whether faults have occurred at the nodes. A signal monitoring application disclosed herein stores related message signals and messages in a relational database wherein messages and signals having common elements can be easily and quickly viewed. The SIMO application cross-references the messages and signals in the relational database according to a transaction table which categorizes and stores the messages according to parameters set out in the transaction table. This allows the messages to be ranked and viewed very quickly without the need to process them and expend valuable computational time and resources.

  • Patent number: 6775272
Abstract: A virtual private branch exchange (PBX) system that routes calls within a packet-switching network. Login information is received from a data device. The login information includes an alias identifying a user at the data device and a network address identifying the location of the data device on the packet-switching network. The virtual private branch exchange system associates the user's private branch exchange extension with the network address and routes calls to the user's (PBX) extension to the data device on the basis of the network address of the data device.

  • Patent number: 6775266
Abstract: ATM is used as a transport and switching mechanism in a hybrid STM/ATM network (20), while the signaling remains normal narrowband signaling. The narrowband signaling is transported on permanent paths over ATM connections, and the narrowband speech channels are transported on ATM and switched on a “per call basis” (on-demand) through an ATM switch. The hybrid STM/ATM network has an access node (22) which services narrowband terminals and which generates a signaling message in connection with call setup. A translator (50) formats the first signaling message into ATM cells so that the first signaling message can be routed through an ATM switch (40) to a circuit switched (STM) node (30). The circuit switched node (PSTN/ISDN) sets up a physical connection for the call and generates a further signaling message for the call, the further signaling message pertaining to the physical connection.

  • Patent number: 6768732
Abstract: A communication system (PBX) is connected via a local computer network (LAN) and an ADSL-oriented communication network (DSL-KN) to a communication terminal (DV-E). The communication system (PBX) has a teleworking module (HLB) which is in the form of a subscriber line module and is connected to the local computer network (LAN). After a communication terminal (DV-E) has logged on to the communication system (PBX), the teleworking module (HLB) controls data transmission between the communication system (PBX) and the communication terminal (DV-E) via the local computer network (LAN) and the ADSL-oriented communication network (DSL-KN).

  • Patent number: 6765923
Abstract: A method and apparatus for early arbitration in a full duplex bus system. Early arbitration in a distributed arbitration serial bus system permits the resolution of requests for a next fairness interval during a current fairness interval such that the grant of the highest priority request in the next fairness interval may immediately follow a last packet of a last subaction in a current fairness interval. In this way, the bandwidth previously wasted propagating an arbitration reset token and waiting for arbitration requests can be substantially eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6760301
Abstract: One or more nodes of a data communication system is automatically switched between two or more possible node configurations, such as between a DTE configuration and a DCE configuration, until the presence of a carrier or similar indicator signal is sensed. Configuration devices include relays and electronic switches. Control devices preferably are microprocessor based. In one aspect, upon power up or other initiation, the microprocessor toggles an output control signal so as to repeatedly toggle a switch between, e.g., DTE and DCE positions and to terminate the toggling when a link indicator is detected.

  • Patent number: 6754232
Abstract: Dynamic compressor/decompressor (codec) speed selection includes monitoring a call in a telephone system to determine the type of codec being used thereon and to measure the payload on the codec. The capacity of the codec is determined based upon the determined type of codec being used. Speed selection further includes comparing the determined capacity with the measured payload; and selectively switching the call to a higher operational speed based upon the result of the comparing. Preferably, the monitoring includes detecting a modem answer tone of the telephone call and basing the determination of the type of codec at least partly thereon. The monitoring also preferably includes detecting silence of the telephone call and basing the selective switching at least partly thereon. Echo cancellation and/or suppression is disabled upon such selective switching. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the switching includes requesting an up-speed codec.

  • Patent number: 6747945
Abstract: An average value of reception power of subcarriers A to D is calculated by a control circuit 162, and the average value is divided by envelops of received signals of subcarriers A to D, respectively, so as to calculate a coefficient signal of each subcarrier. Multipliers 106 to 109 multiply transmitting signals of subcarriers A to D output from mapping circuits 102 to 105 by the coefficient signals, respectively. Whereby, power between the subcarriers at a reception time can be maintained substantially constant so as to improve an error rate characteristic.

  • Patent number: 6741595
Abstract: A network processing system is described that is able to monitor IP network traffic, including the ability to perform trap and trace on IP communications flowing over the IP network. The network processing system is able to scan the entire contents of data packets passing through it, and to associate related data packets into discrete sessions, or flows, which allows the network processing system to search for predetermined search criteria contained within those flows. If a flow is found to contain a predetermined search criteria, the network processing system is able to maintain a record of the flow or to replicate the flow and save it or send it to another IP address for monitoring. The monitoring of a flow can include the entire contents of the flow, or any subset of information in the flow such as call identifying information.

  • Patent number: 6731606
Abstract: Novel techniques are disclosed for adjusting a power control setpoint to compensate for imperfect signal detection in a communication channel capable of discontinuous transmission (DTX). The power control setpoint is compensated for false detections by adjusting the power control setpoint by a dynamically determined setpoint back off amount upon detection of a Good frame. The amount of the setpoint back off is a function of the measured signal quality of the detected Good frame and the number of Erasure indications received immediately preceding the Good frame indication.

  • Patent number: 6728212
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus and method for scheduling the flow of packets. Its purpose is to reduce excess loads, while at the same time, improving efficiency of the system. The scheduler is divided into two or more schedulers operating in parallel. Furthermore, each scheduler is assigned a subset of the available wavelengths. The assignment of wavelengths is done in an asymmetric manner such that one scheduler is assigned many more wavelengths. In addition, the void filling scheduler is used in conjunction with bandwidth grabbing to improve scheduling performance. In a preferred embodiment, the buffer occupancy of a first scheduler is monitored. If it is below a threshold (and a second scheduler's buffer is full), then packets intended for the second scheduler are transferred to the first scheduler.

  • Patent number: 6269089
Abstract: In accord with the transmission system, encoded signals may be processed in intermediate stations and at receiving stations in an order different from the order of the original encoding process for transmission. In particular, the recovery of CDMA encoded signals does not require application of spreading/despreading codes in the original scheme or sequence of application of spreading codes. In one embodiment, code applications may be permuted without losing the original signal which has been encoded. In such applications, not all of the encoding spreading functions results in an increased spreading rate.
