  • Patent number: 6848357
Abstract: A method for controlling the temperature of a heated roll in a calender is provided. The calender comprises at least one heated roll or thermoroll and at least one backing roll, between which is formed a nip through which the material web is conveyed. To the heated roll is supplied internal thermal power by internal heating means of the roll, and external thermal power by external heating means of the roll. Before changing the heated roll, internal thermal power is minimized within a specific period by control means provided in conjunction with the internal heating means; external thermal power is maximized within a specific period by control means provided in conjunction with the external heating means; and the surface temperature of and/or the thermal power released by the heated roll, which corresponds to the surface temperature and/or thermal power desired for the grade of the material web, is maintained within a specific period.

  • Patent number: 6846143
Abstract: Sealant is applied onto or into a folded-seam closure of a metal can. Instead of introducing sealant into the U-shaped lid flange and drying, the compound or sealant is applied to the flange base. The base of the metal can is dipped into a current of fluid sealant or at least brought into contact with it at the surface. This substantially improves the precision of dosing and the exact amount of applied sealant.

  • Patent number: 6845795
Abstract: A portable, handheld sharpener having an elongated body with loop attachments, a battery-operated DC motor with speed reducing gears and a gear plate and a rotatable sharpening unit. A pouch-shaped waste shavings receptacle detachably attached to the body provides a larger cross-sectional dimension ergonomically contoured to fit within the grip of a hand while providing increased internal space for waste shavings storage. An actuator button is molded into the receptacle and is partially circumscribed to provide a hinge-like action to engage a leaf spring connecting the battery source to the motor and also provides a momentary operation of the sharpener while in the original retail packaging. The actuator button will not operate when the receptacle is detached from the sharpener and the internal sharpening unit is exposed, thus acting as a safety feature.

  • Patent number: 6843171
Abstract: A hydraulic press utilizes a product feed mechanism including a product lifting linkage capable of raising and lowering a product-holding platen while maintaining same in a precise horizontal position during such movement. The hydraulic drive for the lifting and lowering mechanism is capable of moving the platen to any precise vertical position and maintaining same at that position before, during and after press operations. In connection with the lifting and lowering mechanism, a linear motor horizontal drive mechanism is coordinated with the lifting mechanism to enable the product feed system to precisely position the platen anywhere along the travel of the linear motor. The combination of the lifting and lowering mechanism with the linear motor horizontal drive mechanism provides, when operated by an open architecture PC control system, a new and improved product feed mechanism more precisely controllable than heretofore known.

  • Patent number: 6840165
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and assembly for opening the nips (9,10) of a calendar comprising at least two elements (1, 2; 3, 4) brought to a nip contact with each other, especially for performing the nip opening at a break or damage occurring in the web (5) being calendered. The tension of the web (5) being calendered is measured at multiple points over the cross-machine width of the web (5) and the calender nips (9,10) are opened when the measured web tension at a preset number of points over the cross-machine width of the web (5) has fallen to a limit value that by a decision-making algorithm monitoring the tension profile of the web (5) is interpreted to indicate a web break situation or other damage on the web (5) requiring opening the nips (9,10).

  • Patent number: 6837158
Abstract: A frame (12) with a charging chamber (14) for receiving a load of waste material, a platen (20) that moves in the charging chamber to compact the material load, and one or more wheels (44) rotatably coupled to the platen. The charging chamber (14) has a floor (34), the platen (20) has a bottom (32) that slidably contacts the floor and supports enough of the weight of the platen on the floor that none or little of the material can pass under the platen, and the wheels (44) support a substantial portion of the weight of the platen on the floor to mitigate sliding friction. The wheels (44) are made of a resilient material and deform from an unloaded state to a loaded state when supporting the substantial portion of the weight of the platen (20).

  • Patent number: 6837157
Abstract: A calender for a sheet of paper comprising a metal roll which is rotated by a first driving unit. The calender further comprises a rotatable cylindrical jacket, a pressurizing shoe, and a plurality of support members. The cylindrical jacket is disposed opposite the metal roll to form a calender nip so that the sheet of paper is continuously passed through the calender nip. The pressurizing shoe is provided within the jacket at the position of the calender nip and presses the interior surface of the jacket radially outward to pressurize the calender nip. The support members are disposed inside the jacket so that they are equally balanced in the peripheral direction of the jacket.

  • Patent number: 6837156
Abstract: A twist tie feed device is provided for twisting together the ends of a tie ribbon which encircles a product including a base plate. A twist head assembly can be mounted on a base plate and receives a first end of a tie ribbon which encircles the product and a second end of the encircling tie ribbon and will rotate about itself to twist the tie ribbon about the product. Positive drive wheels and idler working in conjuction feed the ribbon in one of a first direction towards the twist head assembly and a second direction away from the twist head assembly. The positive drive wheels can contact the ribbon at one side and the idler can contact the ribbon on the other side to apply a positive drive force to the drive the ribbon as it passes between the drive wheels and idler. The ribbon can be fed in the second direction away from the twist head assembly, thereby tightening the ribbon about the product.

  • Patent number: 6830205
Abstract: An electric pepper mill is provided with a conducting element held in position with a battery holder; the conducting element can move to an action position when the pepper mill is turned to an upright position so that it closes a circuit consisting of a motor and batteries of the pepper mill, and can move to a non-action position when the pepper mill is turned upside down so that the circuit is opened. Thus, the motor is powered by the batteries, and in turns, the pepper mill works to grind pepper when the mill is upright, and the mill stops working when it is upside down.

  • Patent number: 6830206
Abstract: A grinder for pepper grains, spices, coffee beans or the like in the invention has a body, a motor seat, an engagement plate, a revolving seat, a base, a battery seat and a cover. When a press button of the cover is depressed, electricity-conducting pieces of the battery seat will be pressed to come into contact with each other to form an open electric circuit, by which a motor will be actuated to rotate a reducing gear assembly of the motor seat so that a gear of the reducing gear assembly will be rotated to turn a journal to swivel a spindle to turn a grinding member, thereby enabling the grinder to proceed with an automatic grinding operation. When the body and the revolving seat are rotated by a user with hands, the grinding member will be turned around accordingly to make the grinder proceed with a manual grinding operation.

  • Patent number: 6830419
Abstract: A dome of a domed aerosol can end is initially formed and then a crown of the can end is formed so that material flow within a workpiece from which the can end is formed is controlled to substantially eliminate wrinkling problems associated with the use of sheet material which is thinner than conventionally used, for example double reduced steel. The peripheral portion of the workpiece is initially clamped between a blank punch and a draw pad, and also between a knockout and a crown ring. An outer first portion of the dome is then formed by an outer redraw sleeve and a dome form die. An inner second portion of the dome is next formed by a dome punch and the dome form die. There may be limited contact of the dome punch with the workpiece during formation of the first portion of the dome and the workpiece may also be clamped between the outer redraw sleeve and the dome form die during formation of the second dome portion.
