  • Patent number: 6773217
Abstract: Flat-rolled steel strip, free of surface iron oxide, is provided with a corrosion-protection metallic coating on both surfaces, followed by continuous-line polymeric coating operations in which a single surface is pre-treated so as to activate that surface for adhesion of molten extruded thin-film polymeric material for in-line travel. Polymeric materials are formulated to provide maleic-anhydride modified polypropylene, which is melted and pressurized for extrusion as a molten thin-film tie-layer for first contacting that activated surface; and, thin-film intermediate and finish layers are each formulated to contain a selected percentage of polybutylene; which are extruded as molten films in overlaying relationship to said first contacting tie-layer.

  • Patent number: 6772682
Abstract: A shutheight adjustment system incorporating tie rods and accompanying hydraulic tie rod nut assemblies in connecting a bed to a bolster of a mechanical press for dynamically altering the tensioning of the tie rods. Each hydraulic tie rod nut assembly includes a cylinder with an inner sliding piston threadably engaging the tie rod. A pressurizing mechanism injects pressurized fluid within a chamber formed by the piston and cylinder. By increasing pressure within the chamber of the hydraulic tie rod nut assembly, compression between the press bed and press bolster may be increased, thereby increasing the press shutheight.

  • Patent number: 6769354
Abstract: A method of laser-assisted pressing is used to adjust the pressing position with a laser projector and an impressible element while pressing an opaque object. The apparatus in this invention is characterized by a platform, a pressing unit with at least one press head, and at least one laser projector for projecting a laser beam to form a light area. The press head presses the impressible element to form a pressure mark indicating the pressing position. The light area is then adjusted to match the pressure mark. Finally, the relative positioning of the platform and the pressing unit is adjusted to match the light area with the area to be pressed. Thus the pressing position will be accurate in the pressing process.

  • Patent number: 6764380
Abstract: The thickness of a layer on a substrate is measured in-situ during chemical mechanical polishing. A light beam is divided through a window in a polishing pad, and the motion of the polishing pad relative to the substrate causes the light beam to move in a path across the substrate surface. An interference signal produced by the light beam reflecting off the substrate is monitored, and a plurality of intensity measurements are extracted from the interference signal. Each intensity measurement corresponds to a sampling zone in the path across the substrate surface. A radial position is determined for each sampling zone, and the intensity measurements are divided into a plurality of radial ranges according to the radial positions. The layer thickness is computed for each radial range from the intensity measurements associated with that radial range.

  • Patent number: 6763863
Abstract: A hydraulic valve is used to judiciously shunt oil from lowering ends of the hoist and stick cylinders that have been plumbed to achieve near horizontal movement. This allows the use of cylinders that have unequal rod/bore ratios or to compensate for certain transient effects that may require the exchange of oil to the reservoir. The action of the hydraulic valve acts without obtrusive operator intervention and is essentially automatic. This allows for greater flexibility in the design of the boom system, allows the boom system to perform various tasks, while not requiring obtrusive intervention from the operator.

  • Patent number: 6752185
Abstract: A debarking drum has a cylindrical steel shell mounted for rotation about the drum axis. The drum receives logs fed into one end and is rotated such that the tumbling action of the logs against one another within the drum causes the bark to be removed, and the debarked logs to be discharged at an outlet end of the drum. The cylindrical shell of the drum is penetrated by a multiplicity of slots at least some of which are larger than normal having a minimum width of 3½ inches, preferably 6 inches, and a length of about one to two feet. The slots are arrayed circumferentially about the drum and axially along the length of the drum. Each of the larger slots has a cover which is mounted to the exterior of the drum and is spaced to form a minimum gap between the exterior surface of the drum and the cover of two inches.
